2 New clutches

Please help... my Toyota Yaris 2003' which is FAB little car, and has NEVER missed a beat. Had a new clutch fitted- Oct' 08. That needed replacing after 3k !!

The second clutch (current) has covered about 1.5k, that was 6 weeks ago.
That now is also playing up, juddering, and slipping in reverse (only). It is covered under warranty ( 2 yrs )
I do understand that it has to "bed-in" but seriously really.. how long do you slip a clutch before in does "BED-IN" The clutch was NOT a Toyota supplied part ??

hope you haven't been beating on the car with a brand new clutch. there is a break in period for clutch varies on who you ask. Could be 1000 miles-3000 miles

Treat her well... but done 1500 miles already. I do not think it is going to improve... honestly. ???

If you hold the clutch in when stopped at a traffic light, the light friction on the clutch plate will polish it and cause slippage and chatter. When waiting at a traffic light, it's best to put the transmission in neutral and leave the clutch out. I hope this helps.

I'll try that thanks... I never sit in traffic or lights with foot on clutch... lots avoidable pressure on clutch.
But thanks again, will certainly try it, on my 26 mile commute to my Funeral Home. :smile:

If the 2003 went all that time without any clutch problems we can eliminate your driving style as the cause for the two premature clutch failures,.
Either the clutches you are installing are defective or the installation is defective.

Bought the car with 29k on the clock- the 1st clutch was fitted @ 50k so yeah poor clutch or bad fitting.... I am a little sick so to speak.... as you can imagine !!!

I had a very similar situation with my 2005 Scion xB. The throw-out bearing went at 28,000 miles and the clutch was slipping badly. Toyota/Scion replaced the bearing under warranty. Then, at 35,000 miles, it was slipping yet again. They replaced the entire clutch, the housing, bearings, etc. I traded it in for my Yaris.

Clutches are like the brake pads on a disc brake, when the clutch disc (wearing surface) is replaced it is always a good idea to check the pressure plate (its like the metal disc in a brake system) to see if it needs to be resurfaced or even replaced. Do the throw-out bearing at the same time for good measure (they are cheap).
The shop should have checked the condition of the pressure plate and throw-out bearing and made sure they was no oil leaking in there (from the engine or transmission seals) that will spell sure failure.

Hope they're replacing everything with a new clutch-pack, and they resurfaced and shimmed or replaced the flywheel. If they resurfaced it, maybe the finish was too course...might check your mounts also. Bad mounts can cause a shudder during take-off.

Not sure how a Yaris clutch is hooked up but if there is an oil seal between Clutch and engine it might have got pinched in the reassembly process and maybe letting a few intermittent drops of oil get by,if so it will definitely give you the feel of a fading clutch.

Your comments are all very welcomed.... a big thank to you all.
The clutch kit was fitted, but NO skimmed OR new flywheel.. certainly not balanced -period. A new thrust / release bearing was fitted, though.
I do think the garage are somewhat deluded, if they have not gave any consideration to the flywheel-it's state of balance or surface condition.

In it's present state I REALLY think it is spent.... with NO amount of miles will rectify it's chatter / judder ???
