Lightweight Tires

Lightweight Wheels are always being brought up but what about Lightweight Tires? I recently purchased a set of miata "daisies" they are 14x5.5 and weigh 12.3lbs. They are similar to the Rota RB but are 7 spokes instead of 8.
I'm personally looking for the lightiest street tire around. I have found the Falken 512's in a 175/65R14 at 14.9lbs. Is there a lighter tire out there that provides comperable perfromance to the falken?

I too have been looking for light tires and all the good ones seem to be 15+ lbs, even at 15" sizes.

daisy's dont clear the calipers w/o spacers....tried this last fall...

Wheels arived today, I might refinish them with a different color plus they have some curbed scratching not sure of what color I'll go with, thinking something dark. Anyway hope someone replies with some tire weights as it seems no one cares or knows about this. The 512 still seems the lighest too bad, I was hoping for a 13lb tire.

I have 512s too b/c they were the lightest in the size I was looking for. If you want tire weights, best to do your own legwork and goto various tire manufacturers websites and see if they post that info in their specs... I've found about half do.

the problem with lightweight tires is they usually have a weak side-wall and produce worse steering feedback and have a higher tendenacy to roll-over on hard cornering.
that and they're usually more expensive.

that's a REALLY heavy wheel for the size.


the falken 512's are awful tires, lightweight or not.

I got the Falken 512s in 205/40/17 because they were the lightest, and they have really stiff reinforced sidewalls...Toyota had a heck of a time mounting them on my Konigs...

i have to disagree on the 512's. worst sidewall i've ever had, very soft, scary in the rain, and awful at autocross

Seriously, that's heavy! I missed that. Wow. My 16x6.5 rims are 12.1 lbs!

But yeah, the 512s are reinforced in certain sizes... extra load-bearing capacity. Rain performance has been ok (only one season on them so far), and I haven't pushed them near any limits at all! :tongue:

12.3 isn't as bad as a 12.1 16" considering I paid less for the set then the cost of 1 traklight. It's also cosmetically pleasing to me considering the other options and is proven hold up on tough CA roads and was specifically developed for one the best roadsters of all time. Price is the main factor to most especially those who drive an econo box. Now back to the original topic of Tires and NOT Wheels...... I'm looking for rubber that performs well at the least amount of weight. I don't like heavy rubbers.

Enkei makes 15x7 rims at 9.5lbs

If a manufacturer doesn't list the tire weight you can email them with the size and they'll tell you the weight.

When it comes to tire, I believe safety is far more important than weight because that is the only thing your car have on the road surface..

Choose whatever tire that you feel is the safest to you and not just lightest, once you chose the tire, look up their spec sheet because even different width of the same size tire have different weight, so this way you can choose the lightest and yet safest tire of your choice.

To be honest, I wouldn't worry about light weight tires. What you'd be gaining in weight savings, you'd probably lose in sidewall support.
