I'm seriously thinking I can get more . I never cracked 65 mph . If I would have been thinking I would have used nuetral on some of those 8% grades .

One of these days ( actually it would take a weekend ) , I'm gonna drive it until it sputters .....Just so there is no speculation on how much a Yaris LB can get on a tank of gas

I've been in cars that pretty much just quit when they ran out. Not much warning in the way of sputtering.

Happened to me last year when I was really pushing it-- Very short stall and that's it. I remember it as a stall because that was exactly what I thought I did until I looked at the gas gauge. If I had only made it over the hump, I would have been able to coast to the gas station 1 mile down (off the freeway).

Does anyone know how many miles you can go on the last bar? My fear of walking has always kept me from going down to the last bar.

When you're on the last bar and you go to the reserve, it starts to flash. I believe it's a one gallon reserve.

I wouldn't run the car until it runs out of gas. I think you will find the fuel pump is in the gas tank and is cooled by the fuel, if you run it out you have a chance of burning the fuel pump out and will be looking at about a 400 dollar repair cost. Just my two cents worth, if you check there are threads with this very discussion and they answer your questions.

So how many people are going to ask about the last bar? It's been talked to death.

It's approximately ONE GALLON when the 2nd to last bar disappears leaving the last blinking bar. So figure 30-40 miles to go. But don't test this.

Be a man? I am a disabled vet and the prospect of walking a few miles is something I really don't want to encounter.

If this has been asked before.....sorry!

Howdy folks,

Just thought I'd throw this in as my first "O"-fficial post since joining the group.

In my '09 2-door liftback owner's manual it mentions this about "The Last Bar" and I'll paraphrase.

When you get to the last bar, it begins to blink slowly when there is approx. 1.6 gallons remaining and it begins blinking faster when the level drops to approx. 1 gallon.

Last week I wasn't paying attention to my gas gauge on the way to work and coasted into the parking lot here with the gauge flashing on the last bar. Fortunately I had enough left and was able to get to the gas station on my lunch break.

So... yeah, you'd best be looking for some go-go juice when you get down that far.

IMO you shouldn't be drving like this until at least 1k miles. You are not going to get a good seat on your piston rings. You will actually get better compression and milage if you drive the first 1k miles hard with a lot of accelerations to seat the rings.

To each his (or her) own, but I have no desire to run my car (a Cobalt, but brand doesn't matter for this discussion) down to the very last drop in the fuel tank.

As someone mentioned earlier, the fuel pump is cooled by the gas in the tank, and running the tank level too low can be harmful to it.

They say that in cold weather it is good to keep the tank above the 1/4 tank level to reduce condensation of moisture in the tank. Where there is no fuel, there is air, and air has moisture in it. When the air cools, it will not hold the moisture, and condensation occurs, which puts water in your gas.

Also, why take the chance of running out of gas?

Maybe I'm just missing something? Why would a person want to run the tank down to the last drop before filling up?

Tom

I agree. When I see that last bar flash, I'm looking to fill up soon.

IMO If you run the tank down to low then yes the fuel pump has no gas to cool it. But you’re more likely to suck the stuff up in the bottom of the tank and on the bright side it should all fall back down as your fill the car up the next time.

Don't worry about the last bar. The blinking just lets you know that it will soon switch to battery power.
