Got bored yesterday so went out and bought a Gas Hood Stay
then installed it .
Install took about 2 hours
This is going to be a 2 stage install , the first stage is what you see now .
The 2nd stage is the install of a power lock solinoid to open the bonnet at
the push of a button , (so to speak.)

Yeah its a cheap and easy mod to do,total cost of Gas Stay with factory mounts cost me $87.NZ ($48.US approx),stage 2 is a little harder as i need to
make a mounting plate and work out switch placement , for the solinoid
but thats more of a time thing ,
cost wise the switch was $7.00 solinoid $12.
more than happy to help out others with parts so they can do the same.

I was thinking maybe a relay hooked up to the handbrake so the hood can't open when the car is mooving.

THE hood cannot open unless you pull the normal hood release as
well as push the RED button , safty first  .

Now you need an actuator to lift it up and down from the drivers seat.

Very cool! You should consider making a kit... I'll bet a few members would get them if the price is fair (me included).

you could but it would be a little harder and time consumeing to
do , due to space your working in and the weight of the hatch .
you probably want it to work of a remote too

hmmm at high speed, hard braking, you could have the hood flip up = airbrake!

I'll give you 5 stars for ingenuity and tinkering spirit, though I don't quite fully understand why you'd want to have a remote hood release like that in the first place

Because to my knowledge it has never been done , and it is something total different ,
if you are in to showing of your car.
 But the air brake idea sounds cool too , or it could be used to stop the blinding
lights of on coming drivers at night .
i suppose it is a case of each to there own , but i like it ,and that's
all that matters at the end of the day.

Just an FYI to Canadian YW members, PrincessAuto (like HarborFreight in US) has a 17 in. gas shock on sale thru Oct 2, for C$3.88ea, which is a steal and it fits the Yaris Hood.

I did not see this thread before I install, I placed the cylinder porting down, like the hatch, but OP here has it reversed, that will work too.

some of the images I've enclosed.
