Recently the bottom half of my rear defroster stopped working. The top half works great and eventually defrost the whole window, but I'd still like to know what caused this? and how to fix it? Any ideas would be much appreciated.

Look for damage to some portion of the heating element (a scrape, melted area, etc). If you can find the damage, you can fix it with a repair kit (available at most autoparts stores).

The kit consists of a conductive paint. Find the break in one of the lines on the window, mask the edges and paint over it.

search for "Permatex Quick Grid Rear Window Defogger Repair Kit"
I've used this one with a 00- or 0-sized brush (get one at an Art Supply store) because the furnished brush was too big.

Similar problem, took it to dealer under warranty. They replaced the entire rear glass.

Yeah what everyone else said. Repair the damaged grid easy way is get yoru window foggy defrost it and look right after the portion that is freshly defrosted to where its not and then you probally have found your broken grid. Or just get the windshield replaced.

A buddy of mine had a similar problem. Turns out the person that tinted his rear window had scratched through the element when tinting.
