Quick few pic's for you guys, and mainly ChinoCharles, that was interested in how it would look.

Please excuese the extremely dirty Liftback, and poor lighting..

Painted Flat Black.

Some will like, most will hate.

That looks really really nice Chris! Of course it doesn't hurt to have a white car, I'm wondering if this "mod" will look good with any color as obviously darker colors it won't stick out that well. Anyway looking good! It really complements the car well, are you going to do the front as well? Did you just take of the emblem and then put it back on? If so how did you do it? Thanks for the pics!:headbang:

Yes, I did it the correct way... Removed, prep'd, primered, painted, new body tape, re-installed, DONE!

If anyone would like a How-To, I will break it all down again, but would need someones rear emblem to document the rest.

ChinoCharles

A few questions Chris...

1. What do you mean by new body tape?

2. What kind of paint did you use?

3. Any issues with removing the decklid panel to get to the badge? Where did you start/end popping the tabs off?

Nice as well I'm sure. Its a personal thing.

Nothing is gloss black on my car (all factory plastics are satin), so using a Flat Black, to get the look I wanted.

that looks so SWEET!
my polar white hatchback is coming off the boat on monday...a couple more days for processing and we're in business. this is definitly one of the first things im gonna do.
i was thinking of de-badging as per the previous several threads... but i think black "toyota" and "Yaris" badges would compliment this look.
think i could re-attach the badges without making it look totally ghetto? any suggestion would be greatly appreciated... ie, types of adhesive ...perhaps some kind of template for properly aligning the badges...
anything else anyone might anticipate.

Again, looks sweet with the white hatch; it would look good with almost any body color except flint mica or black.

I think I'll give this mod a go at some point.

Painting the front emblem the same color as the car would prob compliment the flat black in the rear pretty well too...can't wait to see what you have in store for us

Removes easy.

Little heat, and grab an edge with fishing line, and carefully and slowly start to work your way around the emblem.

There are no nuts holding it from the back side, just two pins to keep it positioned correctly on the hatch.

Good luck.

02-25-2007, 06:20 PM
how do you "re-glue" it back onto the trunk?

Chris07LB
02-25-2007, 06:22 PM
3M body tape. Its the thinnest strongest double sided body tape around. Used for holding body kits and spoilers on.

02-25-2007, 06:31 PM

You know I ended up popping off the entire front badge with a bit of force, and once I got it off, I finagled the chrome part off and actually just put the dull, black plastic part back on and it matches pretty good on my black car.

Tonight was project night so I also removed the entire rear wiper assembly and plugged the hole, and removed the rear badge and sanded it to get ready to paint it black this week.

Chris07LB
04-12-2007, 09:53 AM
Front emblem can be removed from the black housing (go look at yours to see what i mean), by gently heating and "sawing" away from behind with fishing line.

Same exact procedure for the rear, except there is no housing, it is attached directly to the hatch.

You will need to find some 3M body tape to reinstall the emblems. DO NOT use regular double sided tape from the hardware store, its way too thick, wont be as strong, and will look like shit.

Body tape is whats used to install spoilers, body kits etc. Its super thin, and SUPER strong, so be careful when you are placing the emblems.

That should cover it, now go do it.

Thanks Chris... I'm hoping to do the rear emblem this weekend.

As for painting, do you suggest sanding it a bit first to prep, then using a primer, then paint? I'm assuming spray cans for both primer and paint, with paint specially formulated for plastic. Any top coat?

Thanks!
Z

Chris07LB
04-12-2007, 01:01 PM
800grit wet sand > plastic adhesion promotor primer > base coat > clear coat.

Let it settle a few days, then compound pase the emblem, buff clean, then wax.

Install.

What is "compound pase" the emblem?

Chris07LB
04-13-2007, 08:32 AM
Remove fine scratches, oxidation, coarse swirl marks and water spots!

Here’s your antidote for the mildly neglected car. 3M’s most versatile rubbing compound is aggressive but safe against fine scratches (grade 1200 or finer), light to medium oxidation, pesky water spots and coarse swirl marks. The super-fine cut abrasive wears down sharp edges and smoothes out the paint’s surface, preparing it for a polish or glaze, followed by a protective wax.

umm_bacon
09-17-2007, 11:13 PM
After looking closer at the front, I don't know. The black plastic that silhouettes the front emblem is too textured to easily paint the car's color and then paint the emblem black. I think that even a dull silver to match the wheels up front might look good, but I still like the idea of the black ass badge...Any other ideas?

It isn't perfect. Up close you can tell that I did it by myself. I think that after heating it up and pressing it in tighter, it will look better. There is also a little sliver of black paint I accidentally took off with an exacto knife. As long as you are a few feet back I think it looks pretty good. Hoping that 35% tint will add to the effect.
