So as some of you may know, I was having some problems with the cluster and so I decided to take it out to buff out the splotches. When I was taking out some parts though, I noticed this odd circle as if something was meant to be put there... I took some pics of it. The last picture is what I'm talking about. I'm not sure if it was meant for the "Push to Start" button? I'm a n00b... so yeah.. lol what is it?

That hole is too large for a push-start button.. Plus the standard position for the push-start button is near the key-ignition on the dash (where you adjust your mirrors).

I'm not sure what that hole is for though.. True that it looks like something is supposed to be there.. =\

Yeah... I thought it was a push start button at first because my friend has a camry with the button in the same place.. I looked in the owner's manual and couldn't find anything... I wonder what it could be..

It is an aborted cupholder! LOL.

Actually, I think it is the push starter button hole. The french Yaris is LHD and has the push start button in the same exact place. The whole is just a nest for the button, there is another layer of plastic that goes in before the push start button is there in cars that have it. it would make sense for it to be there, because aren't all the ignition wires right there behind it?

look at this pic. I know it is a liftback, but it is probably the same plastic shroud used in both.

Ohh.. now looking at that.. maybe..

But the RHD models have a hole next to the mirror adjustment which is used for the push start on the JDM models. ATM, mine just has a plastic cover in it's place.

Actually, I am quite sure this is for the push button. On the LB here, the push button is down by the mirror adjustment buttons, yes, but on the Vios (sedan), it is built into that side trim piece, in vey much that location (on the other side obviously) So that mounting bracket would probably be identical on the Japanese Belta, hence you could swap the trim piece for a JDM one with the start button hole. Getting the button, and making it work, is another different story, though!

After reading eTimago's post I got interested.. so I went to Thailand's Vios website, and sure enough.. that is the position for the push-start on their Vios models.

I wonder how much it would be be to add one to a USDM LB?

hahah I might as well announce it here... I did some research on retrofitting the OEM keyless button system to the car, but it requires a lot of extra electronics, its own ECU, keys, etc, and thus would be quite difficult to integrate, not to mention extremely costly.

So I set about to replicate most of the functions of this OEM system with some custom electronics... It's still very much a work in progress, I don't often have the time to tinker with it, but I am close to a demonstration prototype

Hi

My push start button is placed the same way as in the picture. Itīs the Sol model and produced in France.

Regards Steven.

Nice. Wish the Yarii here had that option. =P

But woooh I can't wait to see eTiMaGo's go at it!

Well, I know of someone who can get it done.

A lot of Yarii electronics and parts are borrowed from the prius. IE the wiper/headlight stalk, engine compnents. EVEN THE DOOR HANDLES (where they smart key buttons are placed) Might it be possible to just use the elctronics from the prius, assuming you could swipe some from maybe a crashed junkyard prius or something???

Definately keep this thread updated! I see the button on eBay a lot and I am interested to see what you come up with.

I have the European EWD's with the push-button start schematics. There are a boat load of differences, including ECM changes to make the full OEM version work.

On the flip side, the bump start mode of our USDM cars would allow for a not all that difficult fudged version.

I'm working on it...Just waiting for a JDM harness to arrive so I can start figuring it out...It still may not work because the start/stop includes a transponder and may need the JDM entry key...

Cheers

If you can't get it working that way, I'll make a module that will let it work for you. It would still require you to put the key in to "unlock" the column, but other than that, it would be fairly easy to have it start and stop the engine without grinding if it's already running.

I have a red TRD push start switch that I will sell to any interested parties. I purchased it with plans of adding push button start to the Yaris, but I really just don't have the time to get it all done.

Paid $180 for it. Will sell for $120.00 shipped.
