I live in California, I really want a 5 door hatchback (liftback) are there ways around Toyota's rule about not selling them in the US? Can I fly to Canada, will they sell me one, and I drive it back down here?

you'll probably have to pay steep import fees to bring a 5 door into the country - plus canadian sales taxes and then american sales tax again when you register it in the US. the 5 door will probably make it's way here, likely via the demise of the xA - I'm sure in toyota's mind those 2 vehicles were too similar and the xA is probably the worst seller of the 3 scions. they don't have scion in Canada, hence the 5 door yaris is available. if you decide to try and get one, good luck! you may want to check about importing used vehicles, i know after a car is 2 years old the import fees drop significantly - the new yaris body style has been out there for longer than the us (not sure how long) but if you wait until the end of next year (a long time!) that might be an option too.

There may well be environmental issues (exhaust emisions) and safety equipment issues, too.

If these exist, they make it impractical for all but very rare, and usually very expensive, models.

I forget where, but I heard that the 5dr Liftback is in fact comming to the States. Considering that the Yaris is sitting on an all new chasis and the xA is old generation (I think based on old Echo), it makes sense that the 5dr Yaris would be a better buy then the xA.

all of sudden, i have a thought...
could it be that the new scion xA be the 5dr liftback...?
so, if you want a 3dr, you go to toyota...
if you want a 5dr, you go to scion...?

True, if the 5dr Yaris isn't available, the xA is the next closest thing. If the States doesn't get it, at least their will be more 5dr Yaris leftover for us Canadians. I was always bitter about the Scion line-up being only available in the States, until the Yaris came along

The xA sucks compared to the Yaris LB. Having owned one for 14 months, I got tired of the choppy ride, rude comments (yes, people actually called it ugly), high gear shifter that kept getting in my way (it was impossible to find a short shifter for an A/T xA), and the fact that I wasn't going to dump an extra couple hundred bucks into it to lower it a few inches to improve the handling.

I agree - the xA is definitely the least popular of the 3 Scion's. Ack. I'm so glad I have my Yaris LB :)

i hope they will bring the 5dr LB here in the US..

i do like the 5dr because it will be easy for rear passengers to get in the car.. which in my case i have 2 kids.

they will not bring the 5 doors HB in the states.

though, they are discontinuing the scion xA and xB lines untill the new models come out.

i also highly doubt they will bring a 3 years old model as a 2008 model in US.

Good call man.

The 2nd gen Vitz is now 2 years old in Canada, and 3 years old in Japan.

But I wouldn't be surprised to see the 5-dr liftback offered to the US next year as an option. I bet it will come with a price tag as well :iono:
