View Full Version : So what's the rule for a regional group-buy?

Long story in bullet-points:
I'm in the Kansas City, Missouri area.
I want V-Kool 70 tint on my Yaris.
It's expensive, $1,475/roll for a 100-foot roll which is the only size the local distributor carries it in.
That's enough to do 5 cars with all five windows for sure, with a bit extra.
I found a tint shop that will order it, and install as a group-buy situation for $125/Yaris for the liftback.
Price out-the-door is $420/Yaris installed if we get 5 Yarii total. This does not include removing existing tint if you have any installed.
I have my 2007 liftback and a 2009 liftback interested, so only 3 takers needed.
Yes, this stuff is legal on all five windows in Missouri. 70% visible light transmittance including the stock glass.

How can/should I go about setting this up as a group-buy? I'd rather not bury it in the 'midwest' regional forum since that doesn't get much in the way of readership.

Step one: find five people willing to spend 420 DOLLARS tinting a Yaris.

Goooooood luck!

It's about what I spent tinting my '01 Ford Escort with the same stuff. And I already have 2, myself and one other. :-)

I'm not saying it isn't a good idea, but you might be overestimating our members' wallet thicknesses, me included.

Maybe go to Toyotanation.com and open it to all makes and models?

That type of info was why I was asking how I should do it, before trying to start a mis-informed group-buy thread right off the bat. Headin' over there now!

No worries. Good luck!

Try calling up a few places that do the precut kits. Ask them if you can get a group together if they will give you a 15% discount and still have them handle the money and shipping. I’m sure you can find a reliable company that is slow that would work with you for at least a 10% discount if you can get 20 people in on it.

I will tell you the truth that I hate doing group buys where I have to trust someone else that I do not know to do there part of the deal. I would think this would bring a few people out of the shadows like me that shy away form stuff like this. No I do not want any tine for my ride.

Buy the way dose anyone know the markup for that stuff is?

Well, first off this wouldn't be a 'pay and pray for delivery' situation, but a 'bring your payment with you to the installer and drive away with it installed' situation as long as one was in the region. So I figured maybe a few more would nibble just because of that if they were thinking about getting tint anyways.

As for the pre-cut kit idea, I'll keep looking for that, but I couldn't find any pre-cut kit makers that would do V-Kool even after a lot of hunting. Cheap Do-It-Yourself doesn't mix with ultra-expensive parts usually. And AFAIK $1500 is around wholesale for a full roll of V-Kool 70. It's just that stupid-expensive, sadly. Even the tint-shop said they usually only pay $100-$250 for a full roll of tint, this stuff was just a whole other world to them they didn't know even exists. Admitedly, this is in the midwest, you don't see a lot of high-class Lexus and BMW's and Benz out here, with the per-year property tax on your vehicle. :-)

I under stand. I did not know it was the high price stuff.

With normal tint, no, 70% tint wouldn't even slow down the heat. That's why V-Kool 70's so expensive, AND so damnably hard to find auto-tint places that'll even do it. It's about blocking all the heat, without blocking the light at all so the windows look untinted. Hard to sell 'be proud of your ride' when the buyer can't point and go, "Look! UBERTINT!"

oh hey don't forget those two little windows by the side view mirrors on the liftbacks

Yeah, that's included in the price I wrote, they're just considered trim, not full windows for tinting purposes. Scraps from the rear quarter-windows can cover those easilly. :-)

I understand that it the point of this tint is to block heat while allowing the light in - but I can't feel good about spending $400+ and then $125 for install on a tint job for the Yaris. I spent $171 on the nose for my 20% and it blocks both light and heat - which is usually the combo people go for when they want to tint their windows.

It might be a challenge to find people willing to drop that kind of cash on tint, especially 70% - but with as many people as there are on this forum you might be able to find at least 5 people. I would say try it ... that's all you can do!

We don't live in a climate like Dubai to justify spending this amount of money on a Tint job that would normaly cost $180-$220 from a local Tint shop...

$420 for a Tint job that doesn't even give you privacy? IMO thats just plain idiotic.

And if you want to do a group buy on this V-Kool 70 tint you need to be a Vendor.

No, $420 INCLUDES installing. The raw tint is only $295 for enough to tint a Yaris. :-) And the point is that some aren't trying to get 'privacy' in their car and/or enjoy still having excellent night visibility as well as heat-rejection. Or in my case, the night-vision is actually the main concern, since my current dark tint doesn't block heat for shit AND makes night-driving a pain sometimes. And... I only need to find 3. I already have myself, and a 2009 Yaris Liftback interested.
