Last Call: I am going to place the order, so midnight EST tonight (4/1) will be your last change to hop on. Again, I won't require payment until I have them in my hands and am ready to forward them on to you...

Thanks to the help of one of our members from Denmark, I have finally tracked down the illusive radio trim piece, which Toyota uses with the TNS400 Navigation Head Unit (the one with the removable TomTom GPS). I will be importing the parts from Denmark, then will ship them to interested parties on this side of the pond.

Update on pricing:
Picked up locally in Southbury, CT: $45 each
Including shipping to anywhere in the Continental US: $50 each
Including shipping to Alaska, Hawaii, or Canada: $55 each

This trim piece shown below has the proper sized opening (180mm vs the 200mm in the standard radio trim). This will allow mounting of a double DIN head unit without having to use the Metra-type plastic trim pieces, for a much cleaner look.

If you are interested, please let me know ASAP, as I'd like to get the order in very soon.

I will update this thread with final pricing and the list of interested people:

Can we U.S. owners actually install a radio like that first pic?? And if so, is it a straight plug in and it works or must modifications be done?

That's the purpose of this part - To allow a normal double DIN radio to be installed without having the plastic fillers between the radio and the silver trim. So, any double DIN install will look as nice as the picture.

Hi

If anyones interested I can get the TNS400 too.
I can check if you can get it in black, but then the price would probably be about 5 times as much.
These are made for the TNS400 and thatīs why they are cheap.

What's a TNS400?

CTScott
03-27-2009, 02:48 PM
The TNS400 is the Toyota version of the Eclipse AVN2210p navigation head unit (it includes the HU and the plastic trim piece as a kit). It is what is pictured on the top of this post.

By the way, Danish Yaris is my source for these. I figured that to keep the cost down for those of us on this side of the Atlantic that I would order as many as possible, shipped directly to me, and then I will reship to the individuals over here.

For anyone on the other side of the Atlantic, I would suggest going directly through Danish Yaris, as shipping will obviously be much more reasonable.

That price was based on dividing the international shipping charge across 20, so I am hoping it will remain at that. Until the box or boxes are packed and weighed I won't be 100% sure, but I am hoping that the shipping weight estimate is pretty close to actual. I don't see it changing by more than a couple of dollars per piece, if it does.

This still works with a single-DIN unit, it avoids needing the spacers on either side of the head unit though, so things will fit in nice and flush all around. :-)

You'd need a "standard" kit for filling one DIN slot of the double DIN mounting hole. This type of kit would normally give you a pocket.

Something like this:

hey njiteb, you can also go to the scrap yard an get the single din slot with a cover from a 95 - 99 camry, paseo and i believe a ceilca. That what i did for mine cuz i also have a single din. I got a camey since it was the cheapest at 2 dollars. Also you need the screws that come with the box and it fits well into the stock brackets. I'll psot some pic when i get back home.

At this point it is still $50. By the end of next week Steven should have them in his hands and once he boxes the 25, we'll know for sure what the shipping charge to the US is. We've been working off of an estimate, and as long as that is fairly accurate the price won't change. In an absolute worst case we may be looking at $5 more.

That's a good question. I see installation manuals for RHD and LHD Yaris liftbacks for the TNS400 (which is the Toyota package for adding navigation with the branded Eclipse AVN2210p), but not for the Sedan. The liftback installation manual was where I ran into the part number for the trim piece.

Eh... it's customs. It probably means 'dropped from a forklift and rattled around with a paint mixer with jumper-cables hooked up to opposite corners' just to make sure there's nothing that's chemically capable of exploding.

actually they just open it up and look at everything. whenever he gets that package it will most likely have a packing list on the outside stating what is in it that customs put on it.

Yeah, I know. I was just goofing around with how vague the 'handled by customs' entry was, especially with what 'shipping and handling' has come to mean to a lot of the shipping companies over the years like UPS or FedEx. :bonk:

I might consider doing another if there is enough interest. With the bank wire fees and shipping costs, it takes quite a few to keep the cost reasonable. In this case, Steven got us such a great price on the parts that the final price is more than $20 less than what we'd pay to replace our stock radio trim.

Been trying to install mine for the past 10 minutes, but can't get it in. I have to angle it to get one side in, but can't angle it the same way for the other side to get the other side in.

Ok, figured out why it won't work. My HU (a Pioneer FH-P8000BT) has a small "faceplate" around the front. It's permanently attached (cannot be removed) and this faceplate makes the sides of the unit a little larger than what this trim piece can slide through.

Do you take returns Scott?

Anyone interested in mine? I did manage to scratch it up a little when trying to get it on. There are three scratches on it now. Two are in spots that would be hidden anyway once a head unit is installed (the dark smudges on the the back corner in each pic.). The third is on the front right side of the trim piece.

If the HU faceplate has any trim that sticks out behind the 7" width of the chassis, even if it looks like it can never come off, it can. That head unit can be made 'chassis flush' all around, as seen from this rear-shot of the fully stripped chassis:

http://akamaipix.crutchfield.com/products/2008/130/x130P8000BT-b.jpeg

Or is this a matter of things not quite fitting just in the corners? Have you tried sliding the head unit into the trim, instead of the trim over the head unit?

IsLNdbOi
05-13-2009, 08:06 AM
I tried sliding the HU through the front and the back and it wouldn't fit. It's not just the corners. As I mentioned above, the FH-P8000BT has a faceplate permanently attached to it that can't be removed. I took the entire thing out and it does have screws to remove the entire front of the unit. When you do that, you find that the parts circled in red are permanently attached / molded into / is one piece w/ the entire front of the head unit.

I've circled it in red here:

I had the same problem with the new dash trim and a Pioneer AVH-P4000DVD. My head unit has that non-removable trim piece around it as well. Just use a dremel tool/sand paper/file to trim the plastic dash trim until it fits. Took me about 30 minutes but finally I got it to snap into place and it looks awesome. Don't give up because it can be done with a little patience. The pieces you file/sand cannot be seen once the dash trim is in place, so don't worry about that.

To use it with your Yaris, you would also have to replace the outer vertical trim pieces that have the cut-outs for the radio controls. You would need:

PZ489-B0330-00 (The silver trim piece)
55436-52010-B0 and 55435-52010-B0 (The left and right vertical trim pieces)

You may be able to get the parts directly from your Toyota dealer, since they originate from Europe. If not, it would probably be much more cost effective for you to go directly through "Danish Yaris", as shipping from Denmark to the UK would be more reasonable.

OK - I'll add you to the list. Looking at your pictures, I think that what you will need to trim is the scratched area, so you may be OK, other than the scratch on the outer part of the right side.

Can you pop off the existing trim and take a picture with the new trim aligned, so we can see how much trimming needs to happen for your HU?

Looking at peoples' responses thus far, it looks like Pioneer and Kenwood units have required some amount of modification to fit. Eclipse HUs seem to fit without a problem. As people install theirs, please post your HU make/model and experience with the installation, and I'll start compiling the data on the first page of the thread, so we'll know what works out of the box, and what requires modification to work.

Yes my HU is a Kenwood DNX7120 and I had to trim the new trim piece (not the headunit) about 10mm on the back lip to make it fit - for those that are really picky the color of the new piece for my '09 LB is not a 100% match against the center AC/Air center gauge cluster trim but I am fine with that. The new trim piece is lighter than the slightly darker/smokier USDM center gauge panel.

I just popped mine off to take some measurements. My Eclipse AVN2210p (which is actually the radio that Toyota made this piece because of) has a wider trim ring, which is about 1" in from the face. You can see it in the picture below. The wider ring is 179mm x 97mm. The narrower section is 170mm x 94mm.

http://i372.photobucket.com/albums/oo163/ctscott329/Radio/AVN2210p.jpg

The new trim piece's opening is 174mm x 100mm (6 7/8" x 3 15/16"). This is 6mm narrower than Double DIN spec, which probably explains why some HU's fit without a problem and others don't.

Also, the lip of the new trim piece extends 10mm deeper than the original did (see the pic below).

If I understand correctly, you're trimming the lip of the trim piece to make it less deep? If that is the case, how close is it depth-wise from the trim piece being able to snap on? Also, if you were able to move the HU in deeper (by re-drilling the bracket mounting holes), would that help?

Yes, I thought that's what everyone was telling me to try in the previous posts in this thread. It doesn't look very nice though. You can see in the picture that the trimmed lip can be seen.

Not sure how close it is to being able to snap on. Didn't take that measurement. I don't think moving the HU in deeper would help. The problem is the attached ring / faceplate on the front of the HU.

Looking at an unmounted picture of your KW-XG700, it has a similar lip to IsLNdbOi's Pioneer. Does the narrower part beyond that lip fit through the opening, or is that the area that needs to be trimmed for?

Dimensions (W Ũ H Ũ D):

The face frame of the HU measured 178mm, with an extended nose at 170mm.
By repositioning the HU, the trim now 'rests' on the 178mm portion of the face frame. There is no contract being made on the inside of the trim piece opening.

No. That is made to reduce the opening for the OEM one that comes on our cars here. It lets you mount a single DIN radio in the OEM opening. With the trim we have purchased to mount a single DIN radio you would just have to use the pocket to fill the space below the radio.

No. It would not have the black filler on the sides - The silver would meet the sides of the radio face.

No problem. Your radio should fit, but would have an opening below it, since it is half of the height of the opening. You would then fill the opening with a single DIN filler, like the pocket shown below:

You can typically pick up a single DIN filler pocket from places that sell/install car stereos.

The one that I showed above is from ebay:

Correct. You may have to be a bit creative to mount the alpine HU and the pocket to the stock brackets (a little drilling and/or grinding of the brackets may be required).

The second one has this disclaimer:

"Please not if you are installing a stereo into a Japanese vehicle you will need the dearer din pocket kit as the standard width of a Japanese aperture is smaller than din size and the pocket has to fit from behind."

So, I think you need one which attaches to the brackets with screws, rather than a snap-in one.

Ground off the positioning pins on the HU mounting brackets. Was then able to position HU further back.

If possible, can you post pictures of your modified mounting brackets? Which of the positioning dimples did you grind off on each bracket?

So the new trim piece doesn't rest on the face frame of your head unit? If not, don't you see a gap / empty space around the face frame of your head unit (between the face frame and the trim piece)?

I really don't feel like ripping everything apart again.

If possible, can you take and post up a picture of the side of your HU, as well as one of the mounting bracket. I will then use those to show you what I did.

The trim piece does rest on the HU. When the trim reaches the point where it snaps into place, the back side of the opening just meets up with the 'flange' on the face frame.

I had to do this too, in my case I took a ball peen hammer and bashed down the alignment bumps, and then I slotted out the holes so that I could slide my HU further back so that it is almost flush with the new trim - slightly proud. It looks much better this way. It did take some back and forth to get it exactly how I wanted it, but damn it looks sweet.

Received it two days ago but doesn't work with my two single din setup. The radio & the bottom cover pocket are 182mm. I could cut the plastic to get the radio to open but as in the picture, the bottom cover is wider so that wouldn't open. So now I may have to get rid off it, if i can't think of anything after the weekend its gone. I wanted one so badly and i can't use it now. Here a pic of my setup so if anyone else has the same the 180mm radio trim wouldn't work.

It will fit if you trim the double DIN trim accordingly. I have the Pioneer AVH-P4000DVD which has the same weird face trim piece as yours and I made it work perfectly after a few trips back and forth to the garage to use the dremel tool.

How about pushing the headunit in deeper, per WeeYari's instructions above? The HU should work that way. The question is if the door on the pocket will fit within the trim.

By the way, I have an extra set of brackets.

If someone doesn't have to tools, or doesn't understand the grinding process to move the HU deeper, so the trim piece will fit with wider HUs, I can modify the set that I have and ship it to you in exchange for your set.

Still doesn't work due to the cover it the same size as the pionner unit. Because of pionner stupid din size i had to trim the double din metra brackets so it could fit. Guess i'm stuck with the 200mm opening. Unless i change the cover pocket to an open version. But then i'll have items out in the open which i don't like.

How do you grind the positioning stubs? Will a dremel w/ a sanding head do it?

All I have to do is grind down all of the positioning stubs on the sides of the bracket that face the head unit, right?

I used a file to remove the stubs. Dremel will work as well. The metal is very soft and easy to remove.

Yes, all you have to do is eliminate all 6 stubs on the HU side of the bracket.

Finally got it in. For my Pioneer I used my dremel to grind down all six of the positioning stubs. Then I moved the brackets forward until the top front hole was over the front-most screw hole for Toyota mounting points on the Pioneer HU. The top rear hole is now over the hole where the top rear positioning stub used to be.

In this mounting position, I use one of the original mounting bracket screws for the front hole and a short, self-tapping screw for the rear hole (the one that used to be for the positioning stub):
http://img35.imageshack.us/img35/6226/stockradiomountingbrack.jpg

This is the best I could get it. The front bottom edge of the HU is flush / right up against the bottom edge of the new trim piece. The front top edge of the HU is further back so there's a small gap between that top edge of the HU and the top edge of the new trim piece. I'll have to cut the top edge of the stick on bezel that the Pioneer HU came with so I can stick that to the top edge of the front of the HU. Should take care of that gap.

With this new trim piece and the way I had to mount the HU, the HU now sits further back so it's more recessed. I like how this looks.

I have a small gap at the top of mine which I was able to minimize to nearly un-noticable.

There is a small amount of up/down movement of the HU that can be realized via the 4 screws securing it to the dash assembly. Holding the HU in place with the 4 screws slightly loose, try sliding it up and down. You should notice that you will be able to raise the HU about 1/16".

Give it a shot.

I tried re-positioning the HU. Loosened the four screws holding the mounting brackets in then pushed up on the bottom of the HU to raise it as much as possible. While holding it up, I tightened the screws. Helped a little bit, but the gap was still very visible. So, I took that plastic trim pieces that comes with the HU and cut it up so all I had left was the piece that goes along the top edge of front of the HU.

Looks better now:

I'm all out of the ones from the group buy at this point. From the Philippines you would probably be able to order the part from a Toyota dealership in Australia (I believe that the Toyota Follow-me package is offered as an option there). If not, it's readily available from Europe.

I am actually getting ready to do another European order, and I am going to grab a few more of these in the process.

Cool, well, count me in, I'll pay right away! What other pieces were you thinking about getting from over there? I love stuff like this!

Thanks in advance for all the work and planning you've done for the forum.

There are a couple of people who are looking for the vertical trim pieces that would be required to use some of the Chinese HU's. Also, I am going to get a new set of center caps for my TTE wheels, and I am seriously considering getting a European RS front bumper for my 09.

I'm down for 1 as well. I'm planning on putting in a new stereo here soon.

I just want to double check that this will work for a 09 Yaris Sedan, correct?

No. The sedan's radio trim is different than the LB's.

I'm interested in some of the vertical trim pieces. I've been holding off on the Chinese GPS unit until I read a review of it, but I can't find anyone who has one.

There are a couple of other people who had inquired about those two pieces. They are about $90 plus shipping for the two from Europe.
