View Full Version : Anyone using winter tires on their Yaris?
Hi, just wondering if anyone in Canada running winter tires? And what do they use? I'm about to put in a set to the Yaris as the stock tires aren't great performer in snow, just want to see what people recommand here. Thanks!

Good question... us "southerners" (Ohio is a boat ride from Ontario) will start seeing winter here in a few months, and I'm stoked to ride on some 14" steelie snow burners!

And while we're on the topic, studded or non-studded?

Are the stock tires decent for moderate snow?
I just stay home if we get a lot.

non studded.. i've been driving on pirelli 210 snowsport.. very good snow control.. ok on ice (nothing's really great on ice unless you have studs), and great for winter driving in general.. i'm thinking about going w/ the tirerack survey and trying out the Dunlop wintersport M3's...
always better than stock... all season's are crap...
I was actually looking into Nokian's, but heard they raised the price by 25% this year, so forget it. Another choice is GT Radial, anyone has experience on them?

I test rode the yaris in the snow back in March/April. Even in a foot of powder, slush and ice conditions the car plowed through the winter crap with ease with the stock all seasons. Braking was still stabil and predictable.
I'm use to driving cars with 4 wheel disk brakes and without ABS as well as trucks in the winter so going back to a FWD car with ABS it handles the snow and ice great with the stock tires compared to other cars/trucks i've owned in the past even with top quality winter tires
If I do get winter tires it will only be on the front.

That's good to hear. Thanks.
Nobody uses snow tires around here - the roads are clear most of the time - but good all-seasons are a must.

Hi! I'm from Montreal and used to drive in the snow. My suggestion would be the Nokian Hakkapeliitta. It's the best winter tire around, great on snow and ice. If you really want you can even put studs on them but I don't recommend. Unless you live in the mountains or something. But I lived in TO for 3 years and there is no need for studs over there, you'll be in paradise with these tire! Studs are very noisy and ruins your fuel economy.
I'm going to put up the snow tires this week, was thinking about Gislaved or GT snow. Anyone tried these brands? Any comments? Thanks.

I have the Nokian AWP for my del Sol. It is good tire, however, they up the price by 25% this year, and the dealer doesn't sell them anymore unless special order. So have to find another alternative...

I am waiting for some Kumho KW19 175/65/14. I will try to update the thread with my impressions.
Tire studs are essentially prohibited anywhere in Ontario that is south of Parry Sound District because of road damage.

I though about putting on snow tires. But I won't be.
I spent the weekend driving in some gnarly deep slush, freezing rain, snow you name it.
I can plow through this kind of crap with all seasons on the yaris better then my laser with 4 snow/ice tires.
Even though I have ABS braking is VERY controled and seldom does the ABS even kick in and traction is great.

wow, that's a lot of snow, was that from last week?
I actually found the stock 4 season a bit slippery... it's the Potenza on mine... that's why I'm thinking about snow tires.

The GT Radial is $89 + tax for one, 185/65/15

Got some GT Radial from Steelcase Tires, 185/65/15 $89 each. Will report how it handles when the snow comes along!

yeah
That was from that blizzard that tore through Fort Erie Canada and Buffalo NY
Thursday Oct 12'th
The pics were taken FRIDAY THE 13TH
go figure.
I was supposed to head out on the motorcycle to the friday the 13th biker bash at Port dover Ontario. But got snow in instead and was without power for 5days
BTW who makes the GT tires and where did you get them for that price?
Do you have any leads on stock size all season tires for a good price?
I blew a tire Last thursday during that freek storm (must of ran over something) and tore the side wall out of the front tire (bridgestone Potenza)
the cheapest one I have found was $160 each.
I have a goodyear on ther now with a bout 50% tread left (put it on the back)
yeah

The GT Tires are made by GT themselves! hahaha (www.gt-tires.com). Try tiretrend.com, heard they're pretty good on price.

I have MICHELIN X-ICE on the Echo... they are acting like hell on snow and ice, but... they are expensive as hell! But, this the 3rd winter (I do around 17,000 KM during winter) with the Michelins and I've only a 40% thread wear!
yeah, Michelin are durable, but not too good in traction as they tend to make the tires harder so it last longer, but in winter you need the tire to be soft.

Ya that is good to hear since I probably won't have anything other then stock for the next few months. Most of the time roads are clear where I live as well. I never have heard of anyone in my area using winter tires at all, though all seasons are a must!

i just ordered a set of Michellin X-ice yesterday....should be here in a couple of days...had to special order for the Yaris 185/60/R15 size...not too popular i guess...
These should be pretty good..as i had Michellin Hydroedge on my previous car and they were great...

I heard there are rebates on Michellin tires, make sure you get it! :)
yeah, the tires I got are 185/65/15, no 185/60/15 too. But since 185/60 and 185/65 doesn't create much of a difference, so I just go with 185/65.

Hi,
I put 4 Gislaved NorthFrost 5 on my Yaris. they cost 540$ I'm using the 14 inch steel wheel. Those have been perfect for our winter.
I did 7 000km on it and they dont buzz at all. I will be buying 4 others for my gf's Fit next winter.
Now i'm looking to get some summer tire.... I haven't choose yet. I might go with Toyo Torevo but i'm still looking.

Sailun IceBlazer WST1 (on stock 15" RS alloys). No major complaints for the ridiculously low price. Very decent treadwear for a soft tire and good grip on both ice and snow.
Not usually a fan of such "no names" but did not want to blow my wad on some X-Ices or Blizzaks for the 3 or 4 months I keep them on in Vancouver's rain.

4 Blizzak WS 70s on 2010 3 door at 36 p.s.i. and 4 non studded COOPER Weather Master ST-2s at 36 p.s.i. on the '08 sedan . The new Blizzaks are great .

4 Continental Extreme Winter Contact 15". I run them at 45 psi (the sidewall max is 55 psi). This was my 2nd winter on them and they are an big improvement over the 15" Goodyear Eagle all seasons that came on the car.

Stock Yaris tires get good mpg, but are worthless on ice and snow. With new Toyota 15"X6" alloy wheels, I'm running Kumho Solus KR21 M&S tires...nice! I installed General Altimax Arctic snow tires on the old steelies. When it snows in beautiful downtown Bumpass, I install the SNOW tires and blast through the snow. Tire Rack has been right on with my tires.

winter tires should be used when the temperature is consistently below 8C

For Americans, 8℃ is 46.4℉.
