I was browsing through the owners manual and found that Toyota considers a motor that burns 1qt of oil every 600 miles acceptable. This seems absolutely outrageous to me. Does the Yaris burn oil?

thanks

5K OCI's and oil level has never moved off of full between oil changes.

33,000 kilometers now and haven't seen it move down the stick one bit between changes.

if it burnt 1qt every 600miles.. i don't think it would even pass emission test...

But you occasionally see a new car of any brand that guzzles oil. Perhaps rings installed upside down or some such. Makers cover themselves by saying it's normal.

I remember the '54 Chevy we had when I was a little kid. Pop said it guzzled oil at a prodigious rate when new. He said it coincided with Chevy's introduction of the then-new chrome piston rings. Dealer repeatedly said it was normal. Finally it broke in after thousands of miles of driving, and never needed added oil between changes. Rings were just very slow to seat in that case. Similar things still occur sometimes.

I think they meant 6000 miles. If you drove your car like a grandma since it was bought then probally piston rings didnt seat properly and yes you may burn a tad bit of oil. Which will progressively get worse as the years go on. Especially if you are not maintaining your car regularly. If you broke in your engine properly and changing oil reguarly it will be awile before you have oil burning issues. Unless you are loosing oil to point where you are atleast a quart low before its time to change the oil again then you have a problem. If you are loosing even a quarter or half a quart in 3k miles. By then you are doing a oil change and your back up to full again so no biggie.

I expect they did mean 600 miles. That's a typical position for a car company presented with an excessive oil consumption claim. (It's really not normal, of course.)

The recommended oil change interval is 5000 miles.

FWIW, I just checked the oil on my new one at a bit over 1100 miles. Not only has the level not gone down, the oil's still so clear it's very difficult to see on the dipstick.

Ive never had any abnormal oil levels to indicate burning in 60k miles worth of changes.

I did have a few days where mine drank the oil. It was between the 25,000 and 30,000 mile checkups. I’m using Mobil One 5w-25 (mixing 5-20 and 5-30). It used right at half a bottle in 5,000 miles. I talked to the mechanic that was working on my car and he replaced the PCV valve and cleaned the intake for me.

That was the only time it was ever right below the full dot.

I don't need to replace oil between servicing. Always stays the same level.
