A pair of RECCO tags (http://www.recco.com/system/reflectors_info.asp) from the Ski Patrol at Mount Rose. I've been meaning to get some for a few weeks as I only wear my avalanche beacon in the back country but sometimes things aren't totally safe inside the ski areas, as evidenced by a friend of mine getting buried up to his chest by a sloughing in some chutes. If he'd have been face down rather than face up...
RECCO tags are passive transponders that can be kept in your pockets, or sewn into or adhered to clothing items. When the Ski Patrol is aware that an avalanche has occurred in or near their ski area they bring out the RECCO "wands" to look for "reflections". That's a well spent $20 IMHO, even if all it helps with is recovering my corpse in a timely fashion.

a 1/665 scale Yamato (not my photo, just found one on web)
Quite a ship too..... The IJN meant it to violate the "Washington Treaty" that banned large battleships. Sadly the Yamato was obsolete the day that it went down the slip..... the aircraft carrier would replace it.
It was quite a piece of engineering. The 18inch cannon were the largest ever put on to a battleship. Had the Yamato been around during World War I it would have been hell on the water.
I've read that the US Navy was terrified of encountering it. Fortunately for the US the IJN lacked sufficient fuel to keep the Yamato on patrol. As a result it was easy to track, easy to locate but very tough to destroy. Took a lot of hits before it sank.
The forge which made the Yamato's gigantic cannon (the largest guns that ever were put to sea) is still in business. Today they make samurai swords and nuclear pressure vessels. They're one of two forges large enough to do the job. I read that they have contracts on the books out to 2015.

thats an actual ship:eek: i thought it was a manga fantasy ship
actually gene the model is a manga :http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Space_Battleship_Yamato
i recognized it by the aft fins and the side pods i don't think the japanese were that advanced in ww2 lol
Yeah, there was a animation made in Japan about some group who raised the Yamato and made a spaceship out of it.
I read that the real Yamato is at the bottom of the Pacific, and the blast that destroyed it broke its spine and left the wreckage bent up.
Did wonder about those pods, figured it was some sort of support. Never mind.
Yeah, there really was a Yamato. The ship had two sisters, the Musashi and the Shinano (I think that was its name). The Musashi was lost towards the end of World War II.
One of the more bizarre facts I recall about those two ships were that they had a "spray shell" for the big cannon that were used for anti-aircraft purposes. Called "San-shiki-dan". Accelerated barrel wear but it was a desperation situation. Sank.
The Shinano's construction was halted part way, the big gun turrets were removed and it was converted to an aircraft carrier. During its fitting run it was torpedoed by a US submarine. The Shinano's crew were not experienced in damage control so the ship sank very fast.

Jane's fighting Ships 1943-44 lists 5 in that class. Yamato, Musasi, Tosa, Aki and Satuma.
The Yamato was sunk Apr 7, 1945 in action with the 3rd US Navy (according to the guy that first owned the book and recorded known "kills" in it), and it was thought that the last two (Aki and Satuma) were never completed. In a wartime edition, info on the enemy's ships is scarce unless they were sunk...

I had read a while back that two were completed as battleships, one was a carrier and a fourth one was scrapped. Don't recall it's name, I think it was just a work order or alike.
However Jane's knows more than I do but it makes sense that there was not reliable information.
As I recall work on the Yamato was completed behind screens to protect the site from spies. The Japanese were violating a treaty after all, that limited the tonnage of their capital ships.

As I said, my copy is 43-44, so the later editions probably had more info. It is nice t osee this one, though, as it has all the owner's notes as to when and where which ship was sunk, and by what method.

That shouldn't be all that surprising. Planning ahead means that errands all happen at once (which is better for fuel efficiency as well), "brown bagging" your lunch means no daily expenditures and a monthly savings of around $200, driving a fuel efficient vehicle usually means a good while between fill ups, etc.
What I would think would be more surprising is spending money every day, or even every other day.

ice cream sandwiches,a movie from REDBOX
Since the "new normal" blows chunks and xmas is coming (but luckily so is black friday). And since I just torched a gorgeous slab of ribs I've been slow cooking for a couple of hours in the oven by putting it on my pos outdoor grill...
I've had this for about a year and it's really surprised me. It's a good grill, much better than the George Foreman. Sanyo indoor grill (http://www.amazon.com/Sanyo-HPS-SG3-200-Square-Inch-Electric-Barbeque/dp/B00011HH22/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=home-garden&qid=1258235757&sr=8-1-catcorr) It really is just about smokeless. It's potent enough to leave grill marks on a steak and it slow cooks real good too. Clean up is pretty easy. Bed, bath and beyond is where I got mine - gave me a chance to use one of those coupons they keep sending me. Good xmas gift imho. If it wasn't upper 60s here in Michigan today I would have used this grill to finish off my ribs and I'd be chowing down right now instead of drinking beer and thinking a back up plan will pop into my head any minute now. :help:

I bought new car, home and flood insurance. Not only are we getting better coverage now, and from a company that did not need a bailout in this recession, but it will save us over $400 every year.
didja have to hunt for that price (research) or was it just a matter of geting a quote?
Lunch at a new restaurant to this area, Pei Wei. Pretty good!
Pei Wei is AWESOME...granted I haven't been to one in a few years cuz the wife refuses to try new things... :(

I researched it by getting quotes from over 20 companies. This is easy to do with any of the many online quote engines. It was something like fate that I ended up with the company I did, though, as I had not dealt with them in 15 years and got a postcard from them in the mail the day I began getting quotes.
----------
I went for yet another week without buying anything but groceries, fuel, and dinner and a movie for the weekly "date night" with my wife (this is a good thing for us, but we still "go frugal with it" by going to the theater on the half price day and using restaurant coupons, like buy one entree and 2 drinks to get the second entree for free), but I got stymied yesterday.
My Little Brother and I spent from 10am - 2pm at an outdoor mountain event that did not provide anyone - even the children - with lunch. They just had some snacks out, but we were moved from one activity to another so quickly that we had no time to eat much. As such, once we headed out after the event we were quite hungry, and my Little's mother currently works at a fast food place in the food court at a shopping mall. I had to drop him off to her there, where the smells are overwhelming, so after the 35 minute drive/park/walk I easily and readily spent $8 on some TexMex and a soda there.

Not today, but a few days ago at a local store, and paid less than the cheapest online prices...

Fresh apples at a local orchard.
I have a penchant for the "golden delicious" variety and eat at least 2 a day.
