I used to have a pet roach when I was 6. Jarred it in the park and didn't tell my parents until my mom went looking for the jar and found it dead under my bed
I also had a pet turtle that I flushed down the toilet, ..thinking it would swim back up...

I had a Northern Brown Spider, a Hamster the size of a Guinea Pig (he started out as the runt of the little, go figure), and weird Dog names like Booger and Stinky.

I 've had about every small animal there is....
parents allergic to dogs and cats = lots of small furry animals :p
three of the strangest ones I've had the pleasure of owning are:
1. Degu
http://www.bayou-bend.com/images/uploads/degu.jpg
had two of these .... they are friendly if you get them out but beware these suckers are fast!!!! and unfortunately hard to catch..... I had two and called them "Salt" and "Pepper"
2. Eqyptian Spiny Mice
http://www.rfadventures.com/images/Animals/JLC%20photos/Mammal/Spiny-Mice-3102.jpg
yes, thats right, SPINY mice... they are mice but have quils on their backs like hedgehogs and porqupines. I had two at first and that turned to 8 which turned to 10.... then I separated them.... gross thing is that when one dies all the others eat the dead one.... trust me they wernt underfed... little cannibalistic mice... LOL
3. Sudan plated lizard (not so fluffy)
http://www.animalpicturesarchive.com/ArchOLD-6/1139491958.jpg
cool looking lizards... they are pretty tame but I got rid of mine cause it was terribly smelly and hard to keep clean! He actually had a name.... his name was "GODZILLA" haha

I've had a snapping turtle...actually two at different times. Found them both just chilling in the middle of a busy road.
Had to let them go after they got to be 13 inches long because they were starting to snap at me. Good times.
Right now I've got a couple of cockatoos and several dinosaur bichirs.

my girlfriends brother had 3 or 4 ducklings that would follow him all over the house, take showers with him, etc, etc. I thought that was the funniest thing in the world

I had a Praying Mantis for 3 months when I was in Okinawa. She hung out on a bush outside the door of the aid station where she hunted, and in the morning she would be atop the bush. When I approached she would stand as high as she could and wave her arms about. All I had to do was put my hand near her and she would climb right on.
Her favorite place to hang out was on my shoulder, but if I was holding still she always perched atop a microscope near my desk. She loved to snack on sugar water and to have her carapace stroked. At the end of each day I would place her back on the bush outside my door.
Alas, after 3 months I had to go to Thailand for 3 weeks. When I returned she was gone and I never saw her again.

Praying mantii are very entertaining, depending on the type. When I was at my old fraternity, we had this "hive" of those, and I would occasionally go out there and just interact with them. Lots of fun. What were you doing in Japan?
YAR1S - degus are really entertaining. My first roommate at my old school had one. We would always play maze games with it.

I used to have a Mexican Red-Legged Tarantula. Her name was Liberty. My spider accutally got mites that ended her life. I enjoyed my tarantula.
