What about cut the springs?

Some one told me that just cut one circle of the springs and the drop just going to looks perfect without loosing stock ride. They're doing that on a few Yaris here. My question is what can I really get if I do that? I'm not pretending to do that. What you guys think?

Advantage:
1) absolute cheapest way to lower your ride
2) Keeps comfortable ride (on small bumps)

Disadvantages:

1) Are you sure you can cut each spring exactly the same? Very easy to mess up the balance of the car.
2) Shorter springs that are not stiffer, think about it... They will reach the maximum of their leftover compression faster, and hit the bump stops, BAM... not very comfortable

i assume he has to take the spring off to make the cut, so that shouldnt be an issue.

i know you can take half a coil off without effecting spring rate. a full coil may be pushing it.

Anytime you lower a car, you will effect ride quality. the biggest issue is the effect on the dampers, they just dont work as well lowered. your suspension geometry is altered as well. if you cut your stock springs, alot of times, it will be worse that using proper lowering springs. if you want to lower it a little and retain a somewhat factory ride, you should use the tanable NFs. they are just slightly stiffer than stock and just over an inch of lowering.

I already yelled at my cousin in Rincon when he had his Civic years back (is now a pro drifter with a hachi).

You can screw up your suspension which equals DANGER! This is because of the fact that as Thomas stated, the spring rate is the same there for the bump stops will hit a lot more.

As far as the TRD lowering springs go, Toyota states directly that it does not affect suspension geometry.


Now about cutting the springs, I would just play it safe and spend $120 on a cheaper pair of springs and have peace of mind that my car isn't going to have something BAD happen to it due to something that could easily be avoided.

Good springs are 150-200. Cheap springs are 100 or less.

Replacing your axles is much more expensive. Years of paying a chiropractor is much more expensive. Getting in an accident when your suspension fails is much more expensive.

Plus you can tell when someone has cut springs by the way the car bounces all retarded and bottoms out on speed bumps, and people will laugh at you

Cut springs give a crappy ride, unless you like bouncing up and down a lot. You can easily pick out the cars with chopped springs on the road.

Be smart, be safe, buy shorter springs and take the proper route for dropping your car.

That''s a common practice here in P.R. but for Show and around the town driving but for highways....No comment most likely almost ever AE86 and toyotas around 80's have their spring cuts . For me in my opinion jump on Garm for those springs, if you want to take the trip I can help you out! I have bought 2 sets from Garm one Tanabe DF's that are great! and NF's that are pure LOVE! No, just spend the $100 on the DF210s and be done with it. Don't cut the damn springs please. I see these Ahole drivers around my area bouncing up and down with cut springs and swerving around potholes and causing drivers behind them to slam on their brakes because the ricers have to slow down so much. Next time i see someone do that in front of me im going to ram the pushbar on my envoy straight up their ass

Lol. If you end up screwing up your suspension, I'm sure you can find a new stock setup for 50 bucks or so.

IMO, I'd cut the passenger side a bit more, so you can offset the balance with your weight.

But IMHO, just get some coil overs.
