My 2009 Yaris has developed rough shifting. Im not sure if i just have not noticed it before, or if it was always like this. What happens is when it goes to shift i can feel it A LOT. And its almost as if its having a hard time shifting. Its just rough and loud.

Also, around 20 MPH my yaris basically pushes it self forward. ( i dont know how to explain this well.)

Like ill go from 30, and take my foot off the pedal, and it will go down to 20 and its almost as if its shifting (even though im not accelerating) and it will basically feel as though its pushing my yaris faster.

Is this normal or is it something i should get checked out?

How many miles do you have on your car? How long have you had it? Are you sure it just isn't the touchy throttle?

I would also advise trying to drive another auto to see if it is the same way. If you are new to the Yaris then it may just be that you haven't gotten used to it. If you aren't, then I would most definitely have the dealership check it out while it is still under warranty...

Cheers! M2

You know, I think this is what I feel with my car but I assumed it was just because its a... 'lower end' car. The only other car I've driven is a Nissan Maxima (really old though) but I think it had smoother shifting. I feel like there's a jerk whenever the car shifts (I assume thats what the jerk is, I am so new to this, I'm not even if what I feel is when the gear shifts)

With my old car, I don't think I even noticed when it shifted, and I def do with this one. I'm just assuming its because its an 'economical' (/cough cheap) car..

If you ever can feel your transmission clunking, you need to take it in...

My car has 67K miles on it. I drive 60% or more in hilly cities. I have Dexron transmission fluid in my car which is SPECIFICALLY recommended AGAINST in a toyota TSB.

My car always shifts perfectly smooth

I bet it does this when the engine is cold? Until the engine reaches 180 deg F, it won't up shift to fourth. When going slow, the idle is much faster than when warmed.

ok im glad to hear that its not only me..and i have found that after driving it for awhile the shifting does get less noticable then when i first start it up and go in the mornings.

I will just keep an ear out for things and if anything still bothers me i guess ill take it in to be looked at.

Okie, after this post I started paying attenion more when I'm driving- this doesn't happen all the time, just once in a while. Most often it happens when I'm speeding up fast to get on the highway or when I'm already on it and have a chance to speed up fast.

The easiest way to get rid of this problem for good - buy a stick-shift car......
