Is it when you put in 1st gear and you start going and it feels like the tires are burning out but they're really not?

Yes. The engine is turning over, but the car's speed, in gear, doesn't match the RPM of the engine. When you shift, let out the clutch quickly while gunning the engine, and if the car doesn't accelerate, it's slipping.:frown:

easiest way to find out is try gun it on 3rd.
rev it to ~3000rpm, if your car stalls, then your clutch is still good.
that's what Toyota did back in 2005 when i told them the clutch of my 05 echo is slipping. It never stalled, and just went as if it was on 1st :P

my friend's old car used to do that, hopefully that won't happen to my Yaris, that's expensive to get fixed isn't it, he ended up throwing the car away :)

Replacing a clutch is normal, expected maintenance with any manual transmission, just like replacing tires and brake pads. Taking care of your clutch by not slipping it any more than absolutely necessary, never using it to hold the car on hills, not making "dragster starts" and never using it to reverse motion (that is, fully stop when you're backing up before you put it in a forward gear to drive away) will make it last much longer. But eventually it's got to be done.

What he said.
Sorry, I don't know how much it costs to do that on a Yaris, sure would like to know, as well.

100-200$ i guess, depends what you buy.
but, you shouldn't need to change clutch before some 100,000 miles, unless you are a good clutch rider :P
