Largest underground test. Conducted in Alaska by the DOE. The piece was a five megaton warhead for use by the Spartan ABM system. Since it had to destroy warheads it had to be special.
The test was conducted in a chamber thousands of feet below the surface of Amchitka Island in the Aleutians.
The resultant shock waves not only disrupted the coast line but was powerful enough to drive bird's legs up into their bodies.
One of the consequences of this test was the founding of "Greenpeace".
