Too bad the car cost $27,000. And it's a Ford enough said.

Yeah, it's 34 grand in Canada. For that price you can buy 2 Yaris's and still have money left over.

"Traveling between 20 and 45 mph depending on traffic to take advantage of the car's capability to operate in electric-only mode up to 47 mph"
...maybe it's just being around detroit, but I don't know of any ford owners who drive carefully (hypermile style), or slow enough to reap the fullest of the test benefits.
17 gallon tank...a Yaris driven similarly could get about 850....a Yaris with a proper 5th gear ratio or even a 6th gear would easily compete with this car given the price differenc...but, at least one of the big 3 is trying.

Maybe they will now.
Isn't Ford the only USA carmaker that did not take bailout money?

Exactly...and Ford is where I would purchase a car if I was set on purchasing an American-made vehicle for that reason alone. I'm betting they will end up doing better than GM and Chrysler who aren't blinking an eye at taking billions and getting nowhere.

If one day there is an extreme gas shortage in the USA, it might come in handy to be able to travel 1000+ miles on a tank.

BINGO! You are so right. Ford can do what they want and GM and Fiat/Chrysler will have to produce cars that the government has to approve.

COuldn't you just put in a 30 gallon tank in your Yaris?

This car really, really impresses me. It beats the Camry Hybrid and matches the Insight (based on EPA). If I had $27K, I'd be all over this car.
And how about the regular V-6 Fusion? 37 mpg rated highway! That's remarkable. It freakin' beats the Yaris on the highway!
This accomplishment from Ford can't be overstated. And it has quality to boot too!

$27K is very reasonable for this car. You can pay more for a Camry Hybrid or Prius. And the Fusion is better than the Camry Hybrid (dare I say).
And if you're questioning Ford's quality, you're living in the past. The Fusion ranks up there with Toyota and Honda easily.

Living in the past? What happened to make Ford better or even equal to Toyota in quality? Did those Mexican workers sprinkle magic jumping beans on the Fusion to make it better?

Shame on him for using 40 years of utter crap as a reference point. The Fusion has only been out in the US since 06 - How could you possibly make a claim about its quality? I could freaking build a car that would last 3 years.
I'm rebuilding/fiberglassing the center console on my brothers 1993 camry with 180,000 miles on it. Besides the alternator, 2 power window motors, and general maintenance, its the only thing he's replaced or had to fix.

The Fusion looks interesting, but I'll wait until it's been out for a while before getting too excited. Being a new design, reliability/repair costs/resale value have yet to be determined.

I'm a Toyota guy, trust me, but the Fusion in '06 marked a dramatic turn around in Ford quality. I know just like everyone else that Ford build junk for decades, but Fusion is truly a high quality car. We'll just have to see over time I guess for them to finally prove themselves.
BTW, check any quality survey, and the Fusion is right there on top with the highest quality cars. I'm not making it up.

I live in Detroit and trust me, I see more then enough of domestic vehicles...released ones and non-released "M" plated vehicles. I can honest to god say that I've not had any interest much in any of the 3's vehicles BUT, Ford really is catching my eye. The Fusion really is a nice car style and performance wise. It Definately is not the same Ford most everyone has known for the past years. I'm really excited to see the new Ford Festiva as well.
I get alot of factory and uaw workers coming in to my work every day and it's nice to always get to hear "inside" information about things from all 3 of the manufacturers. One of them was telling me the 2010 models for Fords look really sleek and sexy as compared to the past models because I guess supposebly they brought onboard Mazda designers to help come up with the new looks. It obviously shows because it sure isn't the "same ol, same ol" as before, the new models actually look sporty and fresh.

look at the numbers
they seem to be fudged and not real world numbers, on top of that its a 17 gallon tank.
these are not real world numbers

What gave you that idea? Did you read the article? Of course it's not real world. 69 hours straight averaging 25-45 mph using hypermile techniques isn't your daily commute.
The whole idea was to stretch it as far as possible. Point is, is that it's still a remarkable feat and shows what's possible.

Ford is actually doing pretty good nowadays. I like how they didn't take the government loan. When the fiesta comes out, they'll have a complete lineup. Though I'm still sticking with my Yaris, as there is no other non-hybrid out there that has the space and mpg.

ford doesn't compare with toyota for reliability... honda... yes, honda has slipped, and ford has gotten better.... but toyota has always been good and steady in terms of reliability.

I'll be the first to admit that Ford's track record stinks. I myself have been the owner of a taurus, and let's just say that the only thing less reliable than a taurus's transmission is Obama's stimulus package. Anyway, recently though, they've uped the ante, like Hyunduai has done with thier recent models.
Well, if things keep up, maybe we'll get more fuel efficient yaris's down the road from toyota.

Real world numbers or not, I like a car that can reward you for driving smart.
Think about it, the Yaris is supposed to be 29/36 right? I remember being told that the car adjusts itself to the driver, so I could see 31/38.
Little did I know that those were not real world numbers either as I'm now averaging 43mpg a freaking tank with 30/70 city/highway driving and it ain't even broken in yet!
With the Festiva and the Fusion, Ford is really starting to head in the right direction and they really should be commended for it.
I really do like the styling on both of them as well.
