This DIY came from the following thread, discussing the possibility of adding cruise control by simply adding the OEM cruise control stalk:

http://www.yarisworld.com/forums/showthread.php?t=16188

2009 Yaris are prewired for cruise control. To enable this functionality one may add the OEM stalk, but doing so requires the removal of the steering wheel and airbag. Also, the dealer price for the OEM stalk is ~$125.

After looking at the cruise control section of the service manual, I realized that the stalk's functionality (On/Off, -(Set), +(Resume), and Cancel) could be recreated using four switches and three resistors. Alternately, basic cruise control functionality (On/Off and Set) can be provided using two switches and one (or two) resistors.

Currently, it is believed that this will also work for 07-08 Yaris, but a wire will have to be connected to connector A21 of the ECM or Connector AD4 (which is located above the top of the fuse panel, just under the dash).

Note: For Manual Transmission equipped Yaris, the "Cruise Control Clutch Switch" is needed as well. This is a second clutch switch (there's already one called the "Clutch Start Switch"). The "Cruise Control Clutch Switch" connects to connector A29. Its part number is: 88280-14030 and it lists for ~$18.

Materials required:
4 - Switches (SPST, Normally Open, Momentary) (Digikey part number EG1900-ND, $2.44 each)
1 - 240 Ohm Resistor (Digikey part number 240QBK-ND, $.06)
1 - 390 Ohm Resistor (Digikey part number 390QBK-ND, $.06)
1 - 910 Ohm Resistor (Digikey part number 910QBK-ND, $.06)
~4ft - Wire, 20-24 AWG, 2 colors

I purchased the switches and resistors from Digikey (http://www.digikey.com/).

Procedure:

1. Make sure your car is pre-wired for cruise control:

Check the Combination Meter for the Crusie Control Lights:
Shining a flashlight to the right of the speedometer will make the two
cruise control icons visible if they are present. They will not illuminate,
but will look like the two below:
http://i372.photobucket.com/albums/oo163/ctscott329/Yaris%20Cruise%20Control/Cruise3.jpg

2. Remove the lower steering column cover:

Rotate the steering wheel all the way to either side, and remove the two screws:
http://i372.photobucket.com/albums/oo163/ctscott329/Wiper/ScrewLeft.jpg

http://i372.photobucket.com/albums/oo163/ctscott329/Wiper/ScrewRight.jpg

Remove the screw by the steering wheel tilt lever:
http://i372.photobucket.com/albums/oo163/ctscott329/Wiper/ScrewBottom.jpg

Squeeze the lower steering column cover, by the seam between it and the upper, and gently pull down to remove it.

3. Identify the Cruise Control wires on Connector D3 (white connector at the base of the steering wheel next to the yellow connector): CCS (Blue wire in Pin 1) and ECC (Brown wire in Pin 3).

http://i372.photobucket.com/albums/oo163/ctscott329/Yaris%20Cruise%20Control/ConnD3.jpg

4. Chose a location to mount the switches. I mounted mine to the "push button start" cover to the right of the key switch. This location has a hole behind it approximately 1-5/8" in diameter. If using this location you must make sure that the back of the switches line up with this hole:

Switches mounted:

Hole behind cover:
http://i372.photobucket.com/albums/oo163/ctscott329/Yaris%20Cruise%20Control/Hole.jpg

Rear of cover (with two switches mounted):
http://i372.photobucket.com/albums/oo163/ctscott329/Yaris%20Cruise%20Control/Rear.jpg

5. Mount and wire switches:
Switches can be mounted in various positions, but wiring between them will be the same. Note that in the 4 switch example the leads of the 390 Ohm resistor are covered with heat shrink tubing to keep them from making contact with the other switch terminals.

4 Switch wiring:
http://i372.photobucket.com/albums/oo163/ctscott329/Yaris%20Cruise%20Control/4swLabel.jpg

2 Switch wiring (The two resistors could be replaced with a single 567-693 Ohm one) :
http://i372.photobucket.com/albums/oo163/ctscott329/Yaris%20Cruise%20Control/2swLabel.jpg

6. Connect wires from switch assembly to wires on connector D3.
Red wire from switches connects to blue wire of D3 Pin 1.
Black wire from switches connects to brown wire of D3 Pin 3.

http://i372.photobucket.com/albums/oo163/ctscott329/Yaris%20Cruise%20Control/ConnD3.jpg

7. Test Cruise Control functions:
On/Off function can be tested with the engine off and the ignition switch in the on position. Pressing the button once should illuminate the cruise control icon. Pressing it again should make the light go off:

http://i372.photobucket.com/albums/oo163/ctscott329/Yaris%20Cruise%20Control/Cruise4.jpg

The Set function requires that the car be moving at 25 MPH or greater. Pressing the Set switch at >25MPH will cause the SET light to illuminate.

To enable this functionality one may add the OEM stalk, but doing so requires the removal of the steering wheel and airbag.

Is there any way to install the OEM stalk without removing the steering wheel & airbag?

No. It mounts under them, and the connector for the spiral cable is buried under there as well. Removing them is not a huge deal, it just requires some caution and care to not pop the airbag or break the clockspring.

Correct. That's what I did with mine. In any vehicle that I've had with cruise, I never find myself using the tap up/down or coast/resume, so I just went with two switches.

True. I also experimented with a 4-way joystick switch (intended for cell phones or portable video games), but it was a bit too small.

Like it! Does anyone have a pic as to where exactly the wires are at on fuse block area for the 07 HB? Looks like a real nice weekend project.

To access the wire under the dash you would actually have to lift the top of the dash. The connector is above the fuse block. In this picture of the main cable harness going through the fire wall you can see the top of the back of the fuse block in the top left corner (the white plastic). The junction connector AD4 is above the connector with the wide black tape. Lying on the floor with my head on the brake pedal I can barely reach my hand up that far. PK198105 is planning on trying to get at it by raising the top of the dash this weekend.

http://i372.photobucket.com/albums/oo163/ctscott329/Misc%20Yaris/FirewallBushing.jpg

The other place that the wire on 07-08's can be accessed is at the ECM (which is easier to get at). The key with tapping the wire there would be to use a waterproof tap or cold-shrink tape to ensure that moisture doesn't get at the connection.

This image shows the CCS terminal (pin 40) on the ECM connector A21.

http://www.yarisworld.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=20171&d=1236561019

Only one wire would need to be run to this connector (my red one in the DIY), as the other (the black wire) can grab any ground point.

The indicator on the combination meter is actually controlled by the CAN bus, so adding your own LED for cruise is not trivial.

I guess I should have read the other thread first :) You said it will over rev if you hit the clutch while jumping the switch in cruise control. Why would you need to use the clutch while in cruise anyway. If some $hit goes down you just have to hit the break to turn off the cruise then cluth after it turns off right? It's not gunna mess anything up mechanically just by jumping the clutch switch is what I'm getting at I guess.

Hello. I'm eager to try this out next week. I just have a couple of questions.

Question #1:

You stated in step 6: "Connect wires from switch assembly to wires on connector D3. Red wire from switches connects to blue wire of D3 Pin 1. Black wire from switches connects to brown wire of D3 Pin 3."

It's unclear whether or not I connect the switch assembly wires to the blue/brown wires themselves or to the connectors. The picture isn't clear because I'm not seeing the added black and red switch assembly wires. Is the picture under step 6 a before or after? It is exactly the same as the picture under step 3.

Question #2:

How do you remove the "push button start" cover? I tried playing with it to see if I could snap it off but I had no luck. It seems pretty firmly in place. I didn't want to force it too much for fear of breaking it off.

Question #3:

How easy is it to run the wire from that cover to the steering wheel assembly? Is there a direct path from the cover into the assembly?

thanks!

nickhjort
05-02-2009, 12:35 PM
TDB-1, to jump the switch connector, you simply put a wire from one terminal to the other (the switch plug only has 2 terminals right)? You didn't put a fuse or anything in there just in case?

TDB-1
05-02-2009, 01:34 PM
Correct, I actually used a small spade terminal and just pushed it into the connector. Just don't step on the clutch when using cruise!!!! I have not hit the clutch but think if you did it would rev the motor till the computer or rev limiter figures out what is happening.

You have to pull the black vertical trim along side of the AC controls / radio (just get your fingers under the edge and pull it out). Once that is removed the cover pulls right off.

Question #3:

How easy is it to run the wire from that cover to the steering wheel assembly? Is there a direct path from the cover into the assembly?

Very easy - When you come through the back of that hole you loop to the left and right up along the wiring harness for the steering column.

thanks!

did you read the Can we do this thread

havent found any info about it.
by the way. just now i looked in the 2007 manual - cruise controll. and its exactly as described. also has the plugs as shown. the same wires. and need the same resistors.
i think it will work the same as my dealer said: "its exactly the same vehicle. 2007 2008 2009 no changes what so ever" he was right.

the post is for AT and MT... but here we have only Robotic Transmission... so i think i'll consider robotic transmission as an automatic transmission... hope it will work.

any advice guys?

Does your 07 have the brown and blue wires in the D3 connector?

Also, does it have the cruise indicator on the combination meter?

If it doesn't have the D3 wires, then it will require the work that nickhjort did on page 16 of the other thread. Once all of the trial and error is sorted out in the other thread we'll put together a DIY for Yaris which need the additional work.

mariann,
It's pretty straight forward. Just cut the ziptie at the top of the cover VERY CARFULLY! Do not cut any of the wires, obviously, or you will be SOL big time. After cutting the ziptie, there are two clips on the left side of the cover. push them in and lift. Then you will see two hooks on the back of the cover, life the cover and pull so that hooks release. And to reinstall the cover just do the opposite. You will have to have a ziptie to replace the one you cut. If you don't have a ziptie, the clips and hooks will hold the cover in place, but the wires undernieth will be hanging loose. Here's some pics...hope they help.

Does you SOL have radio controls on the steering wheel? If so, I believe that the three wires shown in your picture are for that purpose. In your picture, Pin 1 and Pin are empty, so you will need to wire to the ECM, as nickhjort did.

On/Off turns the cruise control mode on or off.
Set selects the desired speed (above 25mph).

So, you can turn it on at any time, then, once you want to be in cruise mode, you attain your desired speed, and press the set button. At that point you can take your foot off of the accelerator.

To resume manual speed control, you either press the on/off button or touch the brake pedal.

nickhjort
05-06-2009, 11:01 AM
The on/off button just enables the cruise control. When you push the set button, that's when the ecm know what speed to keep the engine cruising at. Usualy right when i turn my car on I hit the cruise on/off button. Then when I hit the highway and get to the speed I want, I hit the set button and the car remains at that speed. The way CTScott set up the two button system (I have them set up the same way and have tested this), you can also use the set button as the -1mph button...meaning if you're cruise is set at a certain speed and you want it to be just a little bit slower, whenever you hit the set button again it will decrease the speed 1mph. Or you can hold the set button and you will start coasting and when you slow down to your desired speed, you let go of the set button and it will remain at whatever speed you were at when you let go. Hope this explains it well enough mariann.

Does anyone have the instructions for the clutch switch for 09 5spd?

Thanks Scott! Now I have a summer project to keep me busy!

Check this out. It's for a Matrix, but the Yaris one is identical in looks and mounting:

i got the parts. i finish building the prototype (not gonna drill button holes in my dashboard if it will not work. right?
and found that the store gave me N.C buttons insted N.O... i'll drive there tomorow.

any way. i hope the last question. one wire goes to the ECM pin 40 and the other to the ground? or pozitive?

by looking at the schematics its shuld go to the ground. but last chack with you guys if i right.

hope i'll install it tomorow

The other wire goes to a ground point, yes.

No. It mounts under them, and the connector for the spiral cable is buried under there as well. Removing them is not a huge deal, it just requires some caution and care to not pop the airbag or break the clockspring.

Snapping the clockspring is a big concern. Very fragile piece. Airbag: not so much. Too many fail-safes built-in due to liability concerns.

I'd like to do this mod to my '08 HB with no CC wiring or dash symbol. I'll run a wire from the ECM A21 connector @ position #40 then to the aftermarket on/off cruise switch.

My question is this: I'd like to have an LED light to indicate when the "cruise control" is "on." Where can I find a hot wire for the LED?

The real cruise light is controlled by the combination meter, which gets the info about cruise mode over the CAN bus from the ECM, so there's no easy wire to connect the LED to.

I thought perhaps there was a vacant ECU connector position that was used by the CAN bus to send juice to the dash light when the cruise was activated.

nickhjort pulled apart his cruise-indicator-free combo meter and I had him check the outputs of the IC that drives the LEDs, before and after activating cruise. The hope was that we'd find an unused output that would be used to drive the cruise LED if present. Unfortunately, no such luck.

I'm confused. I've seen someone ask if this can be done on an 08 Yaris LB with no cruise light on the dash, but haven't seen a solid answer. provided I tap the ECM as mentioned earlier, I should be able to do this mod just with no indicator, correct? The ECM cruise programming is there regardless, right?

Correct. Nickhjort has proven that it will work on 07-08 Yaris which do not have the indicator, by directly connecting the the ECM.

I used to have a Pontiac with cruise control and no indicator lights. In my experience, there's no light actually needed - it's quite obvious whether the cruise is on or off simply from how the car behaves. As for the "Set" light, you'll know immediately if the speed isn't set because the car slows down when you take your foot off the gas.

I'm going to install cruise on my '08 with the proper switch and very tidy wiring when I get around to it. The goal is to make a sufficiently tidy installation that even a Toyota tech will think it's factory, and it will take a lot of looking to prove otherwise.

However, I'm not even going to try for indicator lights. It would be nice, but you don't really need them.

OK, almost have the cruise install complete. I have the 08 Yaris LB with no cruise light on the dash. I tapped the ECM a-21 connector @ position 40 and ran the wire to the cruise on/off switch on the dash.
Last question: How do I wire the new clutch switch I just installed? Does the wire from the ecm go to the clutch switch first, and then continue to the cruise on/off switch on the dash?

expo2, no you do not put the clutch switch in series with the cruise circuit. In fact you put it in series instead of the jumper wire stated on page 21 of this "DIY" HERE (http://www.yarisworld.com/forums/showthread.php?t=16188&page=21)

See my post...#371.

Instead of placing the jumper wire in those two slots (as shown in the pics), simply go from one slot to the clutch switch, then back to the other slot.
Try to picture your clutch switch in place of my fuse in the pictures.

I will be making my own clutch switch tomorrow and I will take plenty of pics.

Hope this helps :)

AAAARRRRGGGHHH!

So, i finally got a few strands of the "red" wire pulled through the ecm connector on pin 40, so i know there is a connection. the black side is grounded directly to the black battery cable.

my switches are wired exactly like described (2 switch method).

i'm going to check my resistor values, maybe i used 620K instead of 620 ohm.

SUCCESS!!!!

Turns out I had grabbed the wrong resistors. Once i corrected it, I road tested and it worked like a charm. I've drilled holes and mounted the switches, but I'll have to wait until this weekend to run a permanent wire from the ecm.

So, I can confirm 100% that it works on a base model auto trans 2008 LB.

Great!

We should try to figure out a terminal that will fit the pin on the ECU, so that a more proper connection can be made. The next time I place a Digikey order, I am going to order a bunch of different sizes of Molex connector pins and try to find one that fits well.

PatrickJohnson

also, you can make a pretty secure connection by doing it the way nickjhort pushed it through the connector, only instead of just fraying the wires a bit, you can push it through enough to wrap the wire up into the large slot in the middle of the connector. This will secure it in place and make sure it doesn't pull out.

Looking at the switches, EB1900-ND, I see it takes a half inch hole to mount. Id like to do the four switch version. Im thinking this could crowd the hole behind the panel. And it would be difficult to drill 4 half inch holes in the panel that close together. Im thinking of using a smaller switch which takes a .19 inch mounting hole. The eb1900 is rated 3 amp @ 125VAc. The smaller switch is rated .5A @ 125VAC. Will this be enuf? Thanks!

The current draw in negligible, so any switch will work. Fitting four of the ones I used is tricky. I drew it up in CAD and found that I only had a margin of about 1/8" for the four switches to fit through the hole behind the trim piece. One thing I just realized that I didn't check how much that hole can be widened.

The hole can be widened A LOT, maybe half an inch on the radius. The catch is the plastic material is like an inch thick. It would make a huge mess to remove it.

Looks like its possible with these switches that they will fit even if they dont make the hole, judging by the standoffs on the panel itself.

Yeah it fits! The switches are on a 3/4 inch circle. The center of the circle is 1 3/16 inches from the top of the panel (as measured on the outside of the panel) and 1 7/16 inches from the right side of the panel. I cut a 1 1/2 inch circle (the diameter of the cutout in the dash)from a piece of paper and laid out the switches on the paper. Then glued the paper to the panel measureing the center point of the circle from the sides.

The illuminated switch won't work without the same type of driving circuitry, due to the switch being a momentary input (rather than a latching switch). Basically, in electronic terms you need a flip-flop, which takes a single input and toggles the output each time the input is pulsed.

I'm probably going to do this mod soon and I'm about to gather what parts I need. I'll probably go with the mounted two button method, and since I have an 07 3-door HB auto, I'll need to run a wire through the firewall. This seems like it will be the same installation as Patrick Johnson (http://www.yarisworld.com/forums/showpost.php?p=320449&postcount=101). I'll get the resistors/switches from digikey, where should I get the wiring and what gauges? Also how hard is it to feed a wire through the rubber hose and have it come out the other side?

The wire gauge isn't critical, as there is no current involved (we're just switching a signal input). I would go with between 22 and 18 gauge. You could purchase a small spool at Radio shack or Home Depot.

Feeding through the passenger side rubber boot is fairly easy. Poke a small hole, shove through a semi-rigid piece of wire, and then pull through your wire.

As I understand it yes, the mod works for the 09 Sedan. Its just a matter of tapping into the two wires under the steering wheel and hooking them up to the four (or two if you prefer) switches with the resistors. With an 09 you dont need to be concerned with the ECM.

Just an FYI, the burden of proof is on the warranty provider to prove that any modification resulted in a failure of the component or part being warrantied. They can't deny a warrantly claim unless they can prove your modification caused whatever is broken.

That is correct. Looks like the 09 sedan doesn't have the wiring in place from the steering column to the ECM. Does it have the cruise indicators on the combination meter?

You're not totally dead in the water for this mod. You just have to do the 07-08 method, which involves running a single wire from the switches to the ECM. Take a look at the tail end of this thread:

With the 07=08 mod, all we are doing to shorting pin 40 on the ECU to ground to turn on the CS and then short it to ground with a load (~600 ohms) to set the CS..

Or did I miss something?

That's all that's to it. See if your sedan has a wire already in pin 40. If so, you can tap it way up under the dash (per the discussion buried in that thread), or at least tap it somewhere along the line.

I had the Yaris out this weekend for a trip to upstate NY and back. (about 250 miles each way) So the CC mod got a good workout. It worked very well indeed! The car got just about 40 mpg when I set the speed on 70 mph. I did the four switch version which gives you plus one and minus one mph at the touch of a button. It came in very handy and I recommend going the four switch route if you install this mod. Getting the Radio Shack really mini switches made doing the four switch really easy...

It just means no indicator lights - the actual cruise will work fine, if properly connected.

You can do it on a USDM 07 for sure. You will need to run a wire from the switches directly to the ECM's pin 40 on an 07 or 08. Also, with a MT you will need to add the clutch switch and wire it to the connector in the under hood fuse panel. Check out the tail end of this thread for more details:

216 to 264 ohms for one between resume and on/off
351 to 426 ohms for the one between set and resume
819 to 1001 ohms for the one between set and cancel

For the two switch method, the range for the resistor for the Set switch is from 567 Ohms to 690 Ohms. Any value in that range is fine. I would just stay at least 10 Ohms from either end point.

For the clutch switch, that is correct that the 07 and 08's don't have the clutch cruise switch connector, so you do have to hardwire to connector in the under hood fuse panel.

There's a grommet on either side that you run the wires through. The one on the ECM side is a little easier to get to on the under hood side. The other one comes out behind the battery.

PatrickJohnson

no, it isnt' anywhere behind the glove box. in your passenger side floor, find the top edge of the carpet and pull it back (it' only attached by a couple pieces of velcro) and it exposes the grommet pretty clearly.

No, that one is for the AC condensate drain. I am not sure which on Patrick is referring to, but the one I was thinking of is the one which comes out just above the top left corner of the ECM (as you are facing it from under the hood). It comes into the cabin fairly high up behind the dash.

tforkner

I used the a/c hose grommet for my wires. It's easy to remove and replace from the inside. I wrapped my three thin wires (5 speed here) with several turns of black electrical tape to protect them from the sheet metal and then replaced the hose and grommet around them. I just carefully removed the grommet and hose and ran the wires through the hole. I then replaced the hose and grommet in the hole. The grommet is nice and resilient and seems to fit around the wires well. I mounted the switches and resistors in an old cassette box and tucked it into the cubby hole beside the driver's right knee. See my previous post on how I mounted a clutch switch. The switch action is very light so the clutch pedal motion isn't going to break it loose, but I'm sure a good grab with pliers would be all it would take to remove the switch. I figure it will take me all of ten minutes to remove the whole system if I have to go for warranty work. The only downsides I see to this are maybe longer wires and perhaps having to crawl under the car. Now that I've done this mod, I think I could complete another installation in less than an hour. This has got to be the coolest modification (at 48 years old and about 18 cars under my belt) I've ever done-

Many thanks to those here who allowed me to do this!

PatrickJohnson

the most solid (and convenient in my opinion) place to ground would be under the passenger kick panel, there is a ground bolt there where other things are grounded, you can't miss it. as for the ecm wire, the best way i think is to strip about 1/4 inch of the wire, push it through the connector, and bend the excess back into the slot in the middle of the connector. if you look at the pics earlier in this thread you will probably get what i'm saying.

TylerJ

So I had everything soft wired in last night and it worked perfectly. When I ran all the wires today and tried it after buttoning things up nothing happened. I think my jumper for the clutch cruise switch in the fuse box got moved when I snapped the lid back on. This is the coolest thing to have cruise for so cheap.

I believe that someone else found that as well. That means that the 09 Sedans are like the 07-08 liftbacks, which means that you will need to run the wire yourself from the ECM to the switches. Take a look at this thread, working your way from the end back for more details:

Hello, I wanted to do this but could not find the parts (even with the part numbers) for the covers\panels on the dash (so I can swap it for the normal one if I take the car in for servicing or something or want to sell the car as a trade in in the future), so I made the mirror cover one myself! It happens to be a hobby of mine to make plastic objects \ casting and molding, so if anyone needs a mirror cover, the master mold is made, and since that was the expensive part, i can make them for pretty cheap if anyone wants one for 10$ shipping anywhere included :). Takes about 24 to have one made and ready so it could be sent pretty quickly.

Thank Scott for this DIY.
System is installed and working. Couple things I found on my 2008 Sedan: The wire is already installed between ECM pin 40 to connector AD4 under the dash. Instead of running a new wire from ECM or disassemble the dash to get to the wire from the top of AD4, I push a long pin up from the bottom of connector AD4 (pin 9) for wire connection to the switches.
My two spring loaded off toggle switches are mounted onto a existing blanking hole located beside the park brake handle. Toggle switches operation are: System enable/disable on each toggle and Set/Coast (when held). Sorry I would have posted photo of the installation if and when I find out how to.

I really enjoyed CTScott's instructions on how to add cruise control. I haven't purchased a Yaris yet but I'm planning to do so this spring. Since CTScott obviously is a very smart individual, I was wondering whether he could provide instructions on how to add a headphone jack in approximately the same location as the two cruise control switches. The jack would not necessarily need to shut off the speakers in the car--just tap into the sound system. Before someone goes ballistic on how "unsafe" this is, I would like to point out that my drive is very early in the morning on an interstate with very little traffic. I would take the headphones off when driving in serious traffic. Thanks.

The two are probably unrelated. The airbag light occasionally flickering may be due to the empty seat weight calibration being off.

For the cruise issue, start with your connection at the ECM. Make sure you are in the correct pin there. If you just want to verify that the cruise and airbag issues are unrelated, disconnect the cruise wire to the ECM.

Posting pictures of your connection to the ECM and you resistor setup/wiring to it will help as well.

I'm not sure about the compatibility, but USDM ECMs can often be purchased for under $100 off ebay. The engine type, transmission type, ABS yes/no, and VSC yes/no are important to match when swapping ECMs. Our USDM ECMs are for 1NZFE and 2NZFE engines. I would say that there is a good chance that that ECM doesn't have cruise control, as that part number is not a USDM/CAN one and so far it appears that just ECMs for those markets have the functionality. One test that you can try is to measure the voltage on pin 40 of the ECM connector A21, with the connector in and the ignition in the ON position. If you measure +12VDC to ground on that pin, then there is a good chance that your ECM supports cruise. If you measure 0 VDC to ground, then it definitely does not.

TDB-1, to jump the switch connector, you simply put a wire from one terminal to the other (the switch plug only has 2 terminals right)? You didn't put a fuse or anything in there just in case?

Where is the switch connector ?

I'm going to try the 4 button set up and plan on getting it installed this weekend. I decided to put all the resistors in their own enclosure and attach the buttons with butt connectors. I can tuck the module up under the dash and if a button ever goes bad (read as: When I spill my drink into one), I can simply unplug the switch and replace it without any soldering. I have some buttons but I'm going to see if I can find something better.

I'll take more pics as I progress.
I couldn't find the right resistors so I had to stack them to get the right Ohm requirements.
I've got about $24 dollars into it so far.

Added more pics. I haven't settled on where I want the buttons or what type I want so I installed the cheap ones I had next to the Aux Port for now

I mounted the CC module on the cross bar under the steering wheel. The box has to lay on its bottom, not on its side as shown in the first picture of it. The steering column cover wont fit if it mounted on its side.

It works! CTScott, and everyone else that contributed, thank you for all the great info.

How does that little panel pull out? (The "push button start cover".) Is there a trick to it? Thanks. I pulled it part way out and it seems to not want to part company with the panel on the right side.

You have to remove the vertical trim to the right of it first (which you can just pull off with your fingers as well).

So in a sedan yaris 2009 you just have to do the switch mount and connect the red wire to the blue one and the black wire(ground) to the brown one of the d3 connector ? Am I right ?

It depends on when in 09 the sedan was built. Some people with 09 sedans have found that the blue wire from the ECM to the steering column is not present. If it is, then the answer to your question is "Yes".

Correct. That's what I did with mine. In any vehicle that I've had with cruise, I never find myself using the tap up/down or coast/resume, so I just went with two switches.

Thanks for the great DIY...Im going to try it this week.... 2010 Yaris...Found the Icons for the Set & Cruise on the top left section of the Cluster panel.

Awesome! Just got mine done. $25.48 total. All parts from Radio Shack except for the splice/tap connectors. I forgot to get them while I was there, but grabbed them at advance auto parts for a little over a dollar. They are included in the price though. I got the red and black buttons (which came in one package), three pack of wiring: red, green, and black 20ga, 470ohm and 100ohm 1/4w resistors, 2 18-22ga splice/tap connectors (red), and the soldering iron kit. Thank you so much to those that put in the time to figure this out for the rest of us! :)

I followed the instructions with the 4 switch method (minus installing the clutch switch) and even got a connector for the ecm to make sure it connects. I am still not getting this to work. I connected the ground to the metal bar underneath the steering wheel. I believe I made a good jump on the clutch connecter.

What problems have people had with this and the solutions? Maybe I'm just missing something silly. I'm trying to drive from KC to Chicago in a week and would really prefer this to work.

The biggest problems are typically bad connections or the ECM pin not being fully inserted. If you have a multimeter, with the ignition in the on position, measure the voltage at your switches where the ECM wire connects. It should read 12 V and then if you press and hold the on/off switch it should drop to 0 V.

hey was just curious i looked for the cc connector under the dash on my 07 yaris, cant seem to find.. Do not all of these cars have this connector? I dont see the yellow connector nor the one i need.. I pulled the drop down cover down, every side panel around steering wheel. Am i missing something or did they not all come with this?

All have it. You have to remove the lower steering wheel cover (the one that the tilt lever pokes through) to see it.

So I did this, however using the two switch method I got the on button to work but the set button wouldn't. I drove to 25+ mph and it wouldn't work. What could be the issue?

Edit: It's a 5 SPD, used the jumper cable and no cigar. Any ideas?

You must have wired it up wrong. You must have the up or down wired in there instead.

BTW I thought of the two button but went with the four button and Im glad I did. You can drive the car in heavy traffic by pushing buttons instead of turning it off.

Check the resistor for set. Someone else recently had an issue where the resistors they purchased were incorrectly labeled. If you have a multimeter, you can check the resistance.

This was the perfect DIY for me; I recently picked up a Used '09 3-Dr base Yaris.(Auto-transmission; manual windows and door-locks; no power option)
Because of this blog, I come to find that my basic Yaris has Cruise Control all pre-wired for me to tap into.
So, I followed your directions; and now I have a 2-switch setup that is the envy of the family. (yes, we're easily amused.)
Many thanks to everyone who added their comments. I, too, purchased the wrong type of switches at first - (N.C. instead of N.O.) - the On/Off would work, but the SET would not. But, after I got the right switches, both worked like a charm.
Also, another deviation that worked for me is:> Radio Shack didn't have the exact Ohm rated Resisters. So, I went with 2 (330 Ohms) since it still fell into the correct range.
I'm not a mechanic, and i'm the last person to ask about Ohms and Resisters... I learned how to Solder basic connectors through this process; and i didn't even burn myself...
Special Thanks to CTScott for the pictures and quick answers to everyone's questions..!!
Oh, by the way, i placed my 2 switches over to the left of the steering wheel, next to the Dimmer wheel. I found it easier to pop out the empty slot next to the Dimmer wheel.

When I told my boss (we build very sophisticated military and space electronic devices) I added cruise control to my then new 2009 Toyota for $10 from a source on the internet he was agast. "But what if you ruin your new car?"

I told him I was pretty sure they know what they are talking about.

I have the four switch and its handier to use that the factory setup on my wifes Camry.

I added a three button version (no cancel) of this to my 09 sedan. Works great. I was wondering if it would be a similar procedure to add cruise to an 09 camry? My sister recently purchased one and is going to be driving cross country in the next few months in it. I've looked at some other forums and have found a few instances of people adding the stalk type without having to run wires, but if anyone (CTScott) knows offhand if the button method would work, that would be awesome. I think I might just go ahead and attempt it, though.

Sadly, I do know that it is identical for the Camry. It is still pins 1 and 2 of the steering column side of the spiral cable connector. Pin 1 (CCS) is grey instead of blue on the Camry, and pin 2 (ground) is brown like the Yaris.

CTScott, you're awesome for posting this! I just did it on my 2011. At first, only the on/off was working, but after reading the entire thread, I found that I was also a victim of resistors that were incorrectly marked. I bought the correct ones, and I am in business. Thanks again!

Yay! I've been waiting almost 2 years for this day. Ever since I spotted the thread, I have been itching to put cruise in my Yaris - only waiting for the warranty to run out. My only tweak from the parent post instructions was to use a dual throw momentary toggle switch instead of 2 push button switches.

I am using Illuminated Pushbutton Switches E-Switch model LP1OA1AB (Digikey EG4641-ND).
Everything works great (thanks guys), but the blue LEDs are too bright.
Each switch has a blue LED with a forward voltage drop of 3.4 to 4.0 VDC at 20 mA.
I used a 2.2 k resistor to limit the LED current to less than 5 mA.
I stole +12 volts and ground from D29 (Instrument Panel Dimmer Control Connector) thusly:

************************************************** **********
+12 VDC from D29 Pin 5 - Brown: Power in from PANEL1 fuse
|
2.2 k Resistor (times four – one per LED)
|
LED (four LED's total)
|
Ground from D29 Pin 3 - White/Black: Ground
************************************************** **********

I would like the brightness of the LEDs to be controlled by the dimmer pot. Instead of connecting the resistors to Pin 5 (+12 VDC) like I have now, it seems to me I can connect the resistors to either,
1. Pin 2 - Light Green: Output to radio, AC lights, etc
2. Pin 8 - Yellow: Output to Cluster
3. Pin 9 - Orange: Output to Hazard warning signal switch and Door lock switch

Which, of any, of these do you think would work best?

BTW if anyone expresses an interest, I will gladly post the exact circuit I used, plus a photo of the LP1 illuminated switches in all their blueness.

Thanks,
Scott

Nice switch choice!

On the dimmer rheostat connector, the brown wire is +12 and the light green wire is headlight switched rheostat output (which goes from 0V for full illumination to +12 for completely off). You will probably still need to add a larger resistor value to make the switch LEDs be less annoying. With the blue LEDs you often have to go as high as 10K to keep them from being blinding.

Sar

Thank you, Scott, for you quick reply.
I will use the light green wire and put a 10 k trim pot upstream of the 2.2 k resistors.
It occurs to me that it might be a good idea for ANYone using illuminated switches to have a trim pot upstream of the 2.2 k resistors so they can adjust the LED maxumum brightness as seems best to them.
Thanks, again,
Scott

Unfortunately, the ECM on your car does not have the cruise control function built in. Prior to 2012, only US and Canada Yaris had it.

1. if i use the 2 switch setup, and i turn it on and have to brake will the CC automatically deactivate?

3. is the D3 connector the white connector on the LEFT side of the yellow connector? http://i372.photobucket.com/albums/oo163/ctscott329/Yaris%20Cruise%20Control/ConnD3.jpg

Yes the brake overrides CC.

If yours has the wiring from the ECM to the steering column, then you can use splice tap connectors (available from most auto parts stores) to connect to the existing wires. Your Canadian sedan may not have the wiring from the ECM to the steering column, and if that is the case you would need to add the ECM pin.

ok cool thanks for the info!, so D3 connector is left side of the yellow connector ? and if there is a blue wire there, then i can just tap into it, if not i have to run a wire through the firewall to the ecm?
