Not on the dyno yet, Art's just doing some preliminary tuning with the laptop. Should be able to get it pretty streetable next Thursday. With two people in the car, we can dial it in pretty good.
We still have a motor swap to do, but I'll take it back after the TORC show on May 9 for that.

Garm, are you going to drag it with that built motor at all? I'm just itching to see how fast that thing is.
Please take that thing and a video camera to Laguna Seca this year. Please? :burnrubber:
cali yaris
04-30-2009, 09:56 PM
that's the first thing I'm going to do.
I have drag wheels + slicks ready to go.
I'm really crappy at drag racing, so I want to avenge my tarnished reputation in that area.

We could fire the coils individually from the laptop, so that meant the wiring was sound. Art took the EMS box to AEM and they re-wired a few things (resistors), and then he was able to fire it up.
Still needs a cold-start routine/map, and it's running lean in boost. So, with two people (one driving and one on the laptop), we should be able to street tune it reasonably well.
It will go on the dyno with the built motor for sure, that's the next phase.

I've spoken with Art and after tuning, I should be able to drive it home next Thursday. That way I can take it to ToyotaFest on Saturday.
Then it goes back to Art for the motor swap.

Picked it up today after some more tuning. Pics and hopefully a little vid tomorrow for you guys.
THE GOOD
**Runs 8.7 psi off the spring, FULL boost by 2800 rpm  - the GT28 with the smaller A/R choice (.64) was totally the way to go.
**Runs very smoothly, much better than before. Idle is adjustable (along with everything else), no more rpm hunting.
**Art programmed a two-step rev limiter. If the e-brake is pulled (enough to light the dash light), it sets the first rev limiter -- this is a great and easy way to do a launch control. Can't wait to drag race this car.
** All dash gauges still work! Speedo, fuel gauge etc., so the dash has its own ECU, doesn't need the main one.
** The xB pedal/cable/TB/intake mani ROCK. So responsive! I love cable throttles.
THE "BAD"
It needs more tuning, not ready to beat up on at 5000+ rpm yet. Might need different coils. Might need bigger injectors  Going to drive "safely" until next thursday when we can go at it again. Trying to get it tuned to a certain point when we can do the motor swap. Not quite there yet, but the car is quite drivable.
THE WEIRD
The electronic power steering doesn't work any more. I know it has its own control unit and relay -- wondering if it is somehow linked to the ECU. Anyone know? Meanwhile... I actually LIKE it! Not that easy when idling, but once under way the car has a much better feel. I may do a DIY on how to disable your power steering so you can try this.
Ok = that's all for tonight!

05-08-2009, 01:15 AM
it's on the C/D i sent you
but from memory the power steering is controled via the main ecu ,
which takes readings from speed and rpm module, i think

The power steering ECU gets its data via CAN from the ECM, so depending on how you're fooling the ECM into being happy, it may not be giving the power steering ECU what it needs. Actually, looking at it more closely - The power steering ECU gets the vehicle speed feed from the combination meter.

The ECM is happy -- it's sitting on my desk.
Sure glad I like the steering the way it is now... !

Maybe you should sit the power steering ECU next to him. You'll save a couple more pounds and the two can be happy together.
You can find out for sure by checking the DTCs for the power steering ECU. You can make it show you the code(s) by flashes of the P/S warning light:
1. With the ignition off jump pins 12 and 13 of the DLC3 connector (OBDII) to pin 4.
2. Turn the ignition on.
3. Watch the P/S light. It will flash quick flashes followed by pauses. Not the pattern(s). Codes seen will be some combination of: 11, 12, 13, 14, 17, 24, 31, 32, 33, 34, 35, 41, 42, 51, 52, 53, 54, 55
4. Turn the ignition off and remove the jumpers.

Told you about the GT28... that was the way to go....
Just wait until you can rev it up to the red line... that turbo will give you more HP per psi of boost than my GT25
You will feel a big difference higher on the rev band.
BTW.... are you rasing the rev limit?
cali yaris
05-08-2009, 07:16 PM
CTScott, thanks will try that. And yes, that ECU might become another nice souvenir.
Rev limit, yes depending on dyno results and where the power band ends up. Art's xB is set at 7200 I believe.

I'll be using the TRD engine mounts when we swap motors. don't need to do much at this point. I have just the torque damper on there now.

Is there another catalog of TRD parts somewhere? The pdf catalog on trdusa.com doesn't have anything for yaris mounts.

I got the pair I have from O3Z33. I'm pretty sure he got them from Japan (he has a knack for that).
I'll try to find out more. Maybe we can do a Group Buy if people are interested?
