When you burn out or lose traction in a straight line do both your tires leave marks? My coworker insists I have an LSD in my car based off the fact that both wheels spin but I don't think I do because the previous owner didn't mention anything about it and I lose a lot of traction on some bumps when I am turning.

i have no lsd and leave two tire marks. jack up the front, turn on the car, hit the gas.

That's what I figured :burnrubber:

I also get lots of hop during WOT on a turn or bumpy roads. I hate it.

Your friend needs to lay off the LSD

Jack your car up and rotate one of the front wheels by hand.. If the wheel on the other side starts turning in the opposite direction.. you have a open diff.

Your car likely has a open diff. on such low powered cars the advantage of running a LSD is negligible unless your doing a lot of track racing or drive the car in a place where there is lots of snow and ice in the winter.

Thanks for the input If the car had an LSD would they both spin the same direction or just lock up?

I thought this only applied to auto trans

no snow and ice here, but I can feel the difference in traction accelerating through hard corners and launching -- both on the track AND the street.

Hit the gas on some grass or loose gravel and see if both tires keep spinning

to the OP, you've only been lucky with the two tires spinning.

an open diff is death for an autocrosser/road racer.

Haven't done any autocrossing yet (df210's are way to soft) but I do like to take turns fast in my daily driving. Eventually I want to invest in a LSD and coilovers :burnrubber:

You don't have an LSD in your Yaris unless you paid the bucks and put one in it yourself.

But, with helical LSD's (which are available for the Yaris), the old-school "jack up the car" tests don't always work as people think they should. Had this problem on Miatas. The Torsen behaves like an open diff when the car is on a lift.

Here's a sure-fire way to tell if you have an open diff: Put one wheel on dry asphalt and the other one in the dirt. Dump the clutch and see what happens. If you sit there and dig a hole on the dirt side, you have an open diff. If you have LSD, you'll move ahead smartly as torque is transferred to the wheel that is not slipping.
