Steps (images attached)
0 - Tools (see image)
1 - Stock Speakers/rear
2 - Remove headrest
3 - Open trunk and press up on 3rd brake light's side tabs
4 - Pull third brake light and unhook the cable
5 - Go back to trunk and press-up on the three plastic rivits holding down the felt/material (which the speaker gaurds are attached to)
6 - Make sure you got the right ones
7 - Unscrew the car seat restraint brackets (3 total)
8 - remove 4th plastic rivit (holding front of cover)*
9 - *Use what's provided. I used the rear cup holder to hold all removed screws/brackets/plastic rivits

10 - (forgot to take pic - but to take off the rear cover simply put you hands under it and start lifting and gently pulling forward; start from one side and work you way to the other side) picture shows what you should see
11 - The stock speaker; remove foam padding.
12 - Disconnect the speaker wire
**
13 - Unscrew speakers (4 screws each speaker)
14 - Since the stock speakers are to big you need to buy/make (since this is diy i made mine) Outline stock speakers onto MDR (not what i used... but its what you should use). I would recommend cutting out the center first, then drill the holes and then finally cut out the spacer/holder.
15 - My finished bracket
16 - Speaker attached to new bracket
17 - Place new speaker into the speaker spot, plug in new speaker (cut off old speaker then splice onto new speaker) then screw down the bracket. Put the foam back on.
18 - Place the "cover" back on. screw the carseat brackets back on. install all of the plastic rivits.
19 - Finally just double check that everything is put back together.*

A few questions:
1) How long did it take you?
2) What did you you use for your spacer?
3) Are you using the new ones with stock H/U?
4) If only using with stock H/U how do you like the sound compared to stock?
Thanks....great tutorial BTW....Toyota had told me the seat had to come out! If it is this easy then I will do it myself.

1 - Well its hard to say... I had to figure how to get everything out and then had to go out and get my spacer material... but if you have all the right tools, and material you could prob. swap these out in an hour to 2 hours (including cutting time of spacers).
2 - I went to lowes and got a sheet of oak paneling (the stuff you find with plywood)
3 - I am using the stock head unit.
4 - The new speakers removed the "bass blur" and I no longer have to turn the volume to 20+ to hear voices in songs. I'd say it was a huge increase to overall sound quality.
if you rate stock speakers at say a "4.5" then its now a "8.5". The one thing I'm thinking about adding now is a amp... only because I like to drive with the windows open when I'm on the thruway.

Just curious... why did you replace the stock rear speaker of your Yaris with these Pio? I hear these exact Pioneer you install and they sound ten time badder than stock? So why?

Why is that?10 times worse than before???

I think they sound alot better then stock, the my stock ones blurred all the voices/sounds together... for example, if I was listening to Stern all I would here when he talked was a real bassy mess... now I can hear him and anyone else talking. I like them alot better then stock.

But I don't get it.
The rear speakers they totally suck! How can aftermarket speakers be worse than the stock ones?

I only got a 1000W amp powering two 12"s.
And I use the stock radio/steapkers on normal settings; except treble at +5. Bingo, good sound/enough voice :)

Probably because you can't just "plug and play" everything you get into stock units.
If I upgrade, I WILL power them using an amp. For now = >
Can Someone PLEASE tell me whats a good speaker for that "mid bass" thats missed by sub's. Thanks.

BINGO!!! Exactly what I'm thinking.
The stock speakers do a real great job, personnaly I think Pioneer speakers are real craps exept for the higher end model maybe. If you want real great speakers, take a look to Infinity, Focal, Hertz, Alpine, ect.

How about in another language?
On a serious note I have ordered my Eclipse for both the front and the back...I can't wait. I won't have them on an amp at first...that will be in a couple months, but from hearing the ones I am getting in both Circuit City and then in a buddies grand Prix they are a huge difference....you would hope so since the 6.5s are running around 120 and then 6x9s are running at 1 1/2.

First off, thanks for the GREAT installation tips! I have 4 Polk speakers just waiting to get installed, 2x 6.5 and 2 x 6x9 db series, and a 10" MTX sub. I also have an Infinity amp that I am planning on hooking up, 6 channel 4 x 52 and 2 x 107 watt (bridged to a single channel). I just need to find a place to put it! The trunk is the only solution (it is BIG!) but I still want to be able to get to my spare.. The stock speakers aren't too bad, but I like to listen to my tunes rather loud, and the stock setup just doesn't cut it. It sounds ok at lower to moderate levels, but washes out ALL of the bass and mids at a decent volume. In my experience with car audio, replacing factory speakers ALWAYS sounds better. (provided you give them enough juice) :headbang: :headbang: :headbang:

I'm partial to Infinity myself but for the price, Pioneers sound rather good, in my opinion, definately better than the stock units. Never heard of Focal or Hertz... I'm sure Blaupunkts and Polks would probably be a nice improvement without totally breaking the bank as well, I'm going to reserve my comments on Alpine.

Great tutorial , thanks & congrats!
I h have one concern..do you feel confident with the wood spacers? since the speakers are actually drilled onto the wood, and the wood is fixed to the chasis...if you put some punch to the speakers...would it cause tension that makes the wood to whip or even break ( sorry for my english!! )
With this said, are there any aftermarke metal spacers that we may get...?:iono:

Honestly I'm not worried (I dont play songs with alot of bass though...). But instead of wood I would recommend using MDF, which is what you are suppose to use... the only reason why i didnt use MDF was that I drove my yaris to the store that I was getting the wood/supplies (new drill bit and saw blade) and the only size MDF they had was a 4ftx6ft.
There are aftermarket speaker brackets... I'll see if I can find it. But if you use MDF you wont have to worry about it breaking or the speaker coming "free".

vodka... nice tutorial... you mentioned the rear speakers are too big? so they are bigger than 6x9 size? i thought rear coax speakers never get bigger than 6x9? what is the stock rear speaker size?
vodkalush
10-26-2006, 10:12 PM
sorry for the confusion.
but the stock rear speakers are 6x9 the issue was that the hole for the speakers was to big to just attach the speaker to the car, so you either need to buy or create a speaker spacer for the new speaker.

Some companies like Alpine sell oversized speakers for holes that are too big
For instance the 6.5" oversize typr R in my laser
Most standard Alpine 6.5" would not leave enough metal to screw the speaker to the base. the actual speaker hole was larger then the speaker mounting hole diameter.
I ordered the set of oversized 6.5" and the cone itself was 6.5" the actual overall diamerter was over 7" and fit the hole perfectly.

The stock speakers in the Yaris are a joke. I think I blew mine out three months ago... straight up paper-coned shittyness.
I had Polks in my Eclipse. They were nice for the price. Simple two-way 6.5"s, I think they cost me 80 bucks a set. I'm gonna try really hard to keep it all Alpine in the Yaris, though... assuming my wallet can handle it.
As far as Pioneer, they're cheap, and in this country you get what you pay for.

I put in those exact same speakers about 2 months ago, pain in the ass to do, but definitely worth it, they pump, and with a subwoofer as well, my car has the perfect balance i wanted.

do the door speakers are made completly out of paper??
don't they have a metal frame? is that why the DIY on installing them, the easy way of removing them is just tearing them off??

The cones are made of paper, I know that. Of course they aren't TOTALLY made of paper, although props to anyone that can do that... damn.
The DIY is funny because the bracket you use to mount the speaker is built into the speaker and reusing the piece requires a Frankenstein-esque hacking of the stockies. The better alternative:
http://www.yarisworld.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1932&highlight=speaker+mounting
(for liftbacks, sedans the rear speakers are different and you can follow the original post in this thread)

well the way i see it; the DIY requires that the modder/DIY'r should use a little brain power and create some stuff for their car by themselves, as to feel like they've done alittle more then just copied off instructions off the internet...
then again I'm about 1/2bottle of scotch less then I was an hr ago, and have had along day... so take the above statment as you will.

I loved this tutorial!! Still relevant on my 2010 Toyota Yaris Sedan (stick shift of course). Did exactly as you instructed with one difference. I converted the existing speaker into my new mount. I decided to go super low budget. The speakers are just 6x9 Boss Chaos SE692. They get the job done and they were only $15 at Fry's.
I cut the paper cone diaphragm to prep the oem speaker. Note how I leave the plastic piece on top:
<a href="http://imgur.com/sM0l7BO"><img src="http://i.imgur.com/sM0l7BO.jpg" title="source: imgur.com" /></a>
Then I cut the four metal pieces connecting the mount to the voice coil with a metal grinder:
<a href="http://imgur.com/EHBKmIE"><img src="http://i.imgur.com/EHBKmIE.jpg" title="source: imgur.com" /></a>
This meant I could simply drop the new speaker in without issues cuz I left the plastic on it to help the clearance and save me from making a new mount. (sorry for blurriness):
<a href="http://imgur.com/tjd2tnf"><img src="http://i.imgur.com/tjd2tnf.jpg" title="source: imgur.com" /></a>
I drilled holes to put the bolts through that came with the speaker to secure the speaker to the mount as you'll see in the pic. Some good glue would have done just as well I suppose. Obviously with the bolts sticking out it won't fit in the car like that. I used the included nuts to those bolts in order to secure it then I used my metal grinder to shave off the excess bolt and even grinded down the nuts a bit to about a height of 3mm. sorry for blurriness:
<a href="http://imgur.com/otXaEYv"><img src="http://i.imgur.com/otXaEYv.jpg" title="source: imgur.com" /></a>
That did it and I mounted the speakers as if they were stock. The stock speaker grill had no clearance issues which is what I was worried about. It was nothing short of perfect. I soldered the new speaker connector to the existing one and voila. Thanks again

Thanks guys. Just upgraded to some Alpine 6x9
My factory speakers were just trashed after 10 years. About 5 years ago they started to rattle and distort on voices. I finally took care of that today.
