Cracked Oil Pan

Hit someonthing in the road. Kept running fine, stopped at Autozone and there was tons of oil under the car, the oil pan was pretty mangled up.


What are the odds that the crankshaft/rod bearings are shot? Should I sell this wonderful little car?

1. Did the oil light come on?
2. Was the car overheating?
3. How far did you drive after running over whatever it was?
4. Did you drive after stopping at Autozone?

Since there was oil coming out after you stopped, you might be fine -- it means you probably didn't run the car dry.

I had it towed after seeing the damage autozone, I drive maybe 5 minutes after the hitt to autone

I am more worred about the crabkshaft been damaged by whatever hit the oil pan

If the block hasn't been damaged, you have nothing to lose by changing the oil pan and running the engine, with oil of course.

So what do you think is my engine totaled, the oil light did come on till I killed it. My fear is theat the crank was damaged. Can sleep over this. Love the Yaris with the TRD suspension it was just a little more responsive/quick thatn I was prepared for.

Have you talked to the dealer? Seems like they might be the best ones to evaluate the damage. I realize this is not a warranty repair but surely your insurance covers it. :iono:

Why dont you get a new oil pan and gasket, remove the old one, and inspect for damage? or have a machanic do it for you, we cant do much without pics or more detailed information.

My vote is put a new oil pan on it and make believe that the event never happened. If it was really only 5 minutes (and not 25...that felt like 5), then you should be ok, especially seeing as how the car had enough oil left to still bleed in the Autozone parking lot.

As far as the hit doing damage to the crank you don't have anything to worry about, as the block has a pretty deep skirt.

If you were running synthetic oil than probally your engine is still fine. Few minutes with low oil pressure shouldnt cause engien damage. Especially since the motor did not sieze. Probally just punctured a hole in the oil pan causing a slow drip of oil. Replace the oil pan which takes probally only 30 minutes to do on our cars its extremly easy.

Then refill motor and see how it goes.

or was his suspension no name from ebay because then that caused it

but a a serious note it the engine wa not clanking heavily from the bottom or no oil light or overheating you should be just fine changing the pan

Thankyou much for the positive encouragement, The dealer said he also had to replace a sub frame member, not sure what that is. But is sound like I will be back in business tomorrow.

The oil light comes on when pressure goes under 10psi. That could happen easily from even a minor leak. I'm going to bet that motor runs fine for a long long time.

Total charge to Geico was $3k, I'll bet I could have done it myself for $800. Theyclaim the sub crossmember is $1000 piece, not at a JY. I well itis good as new know with a trd suspension I drive is like a scolded dog.

I was wondering if there is a manual for service on the 07 yaris, or if someone would be able to give me good instructions for replacing the oil pan due to it being demolished. due to an unfortunate idiot i now have to replace my oil pan, a tire, and possibly more. all help would be appreciated!! also posting as new thread in case that would be a better spot. :confused:
