View Full Version : Intake HP Increases

So I've been lookin around here and on some vendor sites (Mostly Micro Image) for intakes. First off, is an AFE or AEM better? Secondly, what is the approximate increase in HP and MPG (if applicable) for each type?

Well, the AFE would require less work to clean the filter since the filter sits in the engine bay, whereas the AEM goes down behind the foglight, and to clean it would require removal of the front bumper, or removal of the front wheel and fender liner to access the filter. Both are essentially CAI (the AFE has a heat shield, and the AEM is a true CAI). HP gains by itself will probably be negligible, and FE will be affected depending on how you drive. If you drive lightly, it should increase your mpg (I know it did on my GTI), but if you push harder to hear it suck in air, then you'll eat up more gas.

So the TRD site says their CAI would increase about 11.2 at 6000+ rpm... is that actually negligible? I'm looking to boost some HP a bit while making sure that any increase in sound is as throaty as possible so as to be distinguishable from a ricer with stupid fart pipes. Actually, on the subject of exhaust... what's the best way to go with that? Do I need headers, or a midrange (as I know the Yaris' is restricted), or is it just a rear piece/muffler. I've never even looked at my exhaust to be honest! But I like the nice throaty sound with some HP increase. Advice?

LOL. I don't think they're telling the truth. That's almost a 10% increase in power. Shoot, a supercharger "only" nets an extra 50 hp (that's a lot for our car actually). I can't remember the numbers, but I think ~11 hp is what Garm got with headers, exhaust, and intake (may be some pulleys too).
As for the exhaust, go with custom cat-back. It'll be cheaper. Go with either Magnaflow or Flowmaster if you want a throaty sound. I have a Magna on my sedan, and I had a Flowmaster on my GTI.

No intake is going to net you 10 hp, I don't care what the claims are. But, every little bit helps with our cars and they do add up.
I prefer the AFE right now, it's easier to take care of, makes the same amount of power (in my opinion), costs less and sounds great.

Also, the AFE is aesthetically more pleasing imo since it doesn't leave a huge gap in the engine bay. hehehe. But that's just me.

once i finally installed mine properly i had no problems with my afe. i got about 3 mpg out of it and if anything i driver harder than i used to....but i get to speed and stay there.
any way, it comes with 2 really thick nylon washers....ur supposed to put those in the rubber holes for factory box and then put some bolts through into the heat shield. when locked down it doesnt rattle like it used to at all. that's the only prob i had.

btw the TRD intake is an AEM intake, just has a TRD badge on it.

I love my AEM, and with my foglight cover mod it reduced the intake temperature by 10 degrees.

ooh, we need a carbon fiber version of that.

Yeah I definitely didn't believe the claim of "up to 11 HP increase"... just a bit of BS... Where's the best place to get the Magnaflow? Also, with the exhaust, do you need to get headers? Or just the tail end? Again, haha I don't know how the whole exhaust goes together.

Oh and another question about the intakes. With the CAI, is the temperature decrease negligible because of the distance of the tubing that the engine could warm the intake pipe which would then make the difference about the same as the short ram? I saw one thread where the owner wrapped the CAI tube in insulating tape and he said it helped. Sorry for all the questions! I'm just really torn between the two! Also, with the CAI, is there really that much of an increase of danger for hydrolock?

I like the gap so that I can cram in the oil catch can. I took the metal heat shield off the aFe setup to make more room. Pictures this weekend.

the AFE has the heat shield, the CAI goes down which COULD cause hydrolock if you got a lot of water in it.

Or you could get a carbon fiber intake. kargoboy (yarisuniverse) has one left!

I would do the AFE. I had the AEM for a while and had problems with getting the filter wet and eerything was installed as it should be.

Ah, Astroman! I coulda sworn someone did this but could not remember who or find a pic! I just sold my foglights and will be making the same type vent soon--did you back yours with any kind of mesh? did you use a dremel or utility knife?

^ I did the same thing and didn't use mesh. I used a utility knife to cut mine out

is there any kind of routing that needs to be doen to push the air to the intake?

The people who've done this for brake duct cooling added dryer vent hose or similar to direct the air; I'm just gonna cut the slots out and go from there.

Since my engine is sucking air from inside the bumper i didn't use any ducting. I might go back and put in some later on but I figure for on that will help air circulate in ther more than before
