Bass inside the car, not outside.

I noticed that since my sub is in where the spare tire used to be (and is facing up), most of the bass stays within the car. The bass can be nice and loud inside the car, but you can barely here it outside the car. It's either the positioning, or the fact that my enclosure needs to be redone in MDF (I did it out of some old 3/4" plywood I had laying around).

Does anyone have thoughts on this?

my yaris is always loud on the inside and not so much on the outside.
I even drive with my windows open and have my music real loud to hear it over traffic noise, then when the windows close back up its uber loud and annoying...

i guess the yaris just seals in the sound?

why would you want the sound to be heard on the outside anyways? that just lets people know you have subs to be taken. i can play my music loud with my sub and im happy you cant hear it outside the car much.

That is a desirable effect of the Yaris having to be rather sturdy to get decent crash test ratings methinks.

Everything is 4G wire, running from the stock battery. I have plenty of fuses at the correct Amps, and all the amps' RMS match the speakers they go with.

If I have all my windows rolled up in my sedan, I can have my setup beyond the point of pain inside the vehicle and all you hear outside is some trunk vibration and a bit of the thump. however, if I roll the windows down you can hear it comming from over two blocks away. sound dampening for the win.

keep in mind, not everyone wants to hear the music you are listening to. I turn my stuff down when going through residential areas, after dark, or often when at stop lights. only time I really try to annoy anyone with my system is when a 1980s honda prelude with a broken primered ground affects kit and 3 mis matched wheels is assaulting my senses with mariachi music blaring from a blow pioneer sub...then I prefer to drown that crap out.

WOW.... i really can't believe you are complaining.... You've got bass to yourself... and minimal leakage out to the rest of the world... thats near perfect. You're not pissing people off... you're not giving car stereo too bad of a name.... and you want it more outside...


Roll down your windows, fold down your seat, or pop the trunk/hatch. Tho if you did that around me... i'd prolly cut you off and drive 5mph in front of you.

If you want to seriously increase your volume there are basically only two ways to do it that are cost effective. Buying a bigger amp is not cost effective unless you are talking about a 500+rms sub and only have 100w on it.
1: remove any obstacles that are physically inbetween you and the sub (rear seats, Trunk cover if in a spare tire well). Allow that sub to breath!
2: Make a custom box for it that is designed to put higher levels of pressure on the cone. Higher the levels of pressure on the cone the higher the output will be. Ported boxes are awesome... Not all subs play nicely with ported boxes however... And not all ported boxes are designed to be nice to subs... the one found in stores usually are poorly designed.

if you go from sealed to a properly ported design.... you will hear sound outside your car... you will have more rattles... and your sound could be anywhere from 2-10dB louder depending on how you tune it... So go throw on some dynamat/fatmat/raammat cause you will start to annoy the world otherwise.

Just wanted to point out from experience that a ported box with a fosgate HE2 will go relly low and bump really hard, however it won't hit very "tight" If you listen to nothing but rap,dub-step, and bass tester CDs then it will be great but for just about any other type of music you will sacrifice a lot of accuracy with a ported enclosure.

Guys, I'm good with bass inside my own car, and I'm fine with out how loud it gets. I was just making sure my setup was correct. And it sounds like it is. I'm going to redo my enclosure in some proper MDF in a couple of weekends. I'm sure that will help my sub sound even cleaner.

I listen to a huge variety of music, so I think I'll stick with a sealed enclosure, rather than a ported one.

for just about any other type of music you will sacrifice a lot of accuracy with a ported enclosure.

not true.. the accuracy you speak of is dictated by basically 2 variables. 1) the Le (inductance of the coil) 2) the box size and port tuning. Most applications of ported boxes suck because the box isn't tuned low enough, and the transient response in the 40-60hz range is horrible. Add to that most car subs, especially the more expensive ones that claim higher power handling usually suck at the Le part as well.

Regardless, even a horrible sub can sound fairly accurate if port in a properly designed ported box... and vice versa.

you've probably seen my setup here on YW .

i used MDF. and made it to specs for the subwoofer i used. sounds great . hits hard for my metal stuff. it can be quite loud when i put some c"Rap" on lol but its all about it feeling the kick drum not synth bass.

you should take the time to tune in to a couple different types of music. i usually will tune the woofer in using something like dave matthews or something that is usually recorded well and has a good range of bass and clear kicks. then i adjust if i have to listening to my metal :) jazz is a great music form to start out with .. nice smooth bass lines and tight kick drums

My favorite is the guys near me with their old Chevy vans. I got to watch one of these geniuses put a dual kicker comp ported box in the back of his (POS) Chevy van that just barely ran.

I see no sense in having a nice system in a piece of crap car...unless you are trying to drown out the clanks, rattles, shaking and other death cries the car might be making.
