well, i can't see that video at work, but i stopped going there when i started putting synthetic in my last new car (honda element); around the same time they tried to start charging me $10 to remove a skid plate on my Passat, what a joke! dealers only for me since, though i'm thinking of DIY on the yaris...is it easy?

I go into the dealership every 5,000 miles and get my stamp in the maintenance book. If you don't you're devaluing your car, plain and simple.

Seriously though, I went there in the middle of the day and it took them 2 minutes to change my oil. I almost think they didn't really do anything :laugh:

as far as devaluing the care, I'm driving this bad'bwoy till the wheels fall off so f-it.

Never would I take a car to a jiffy lube, corner gas station shop or any quick lube place for fluid changes.

It's either done by me or the dealership!
At least at the dealership I can watch the work being donr through the window.

I use Amsoil synthetics an change it myself at home but understand many people living in apprtments or whatever don't have the time or space to do their own oil changes.
Our local Toyota dealer does supply Mobil 1 for anyone that wants it, but it costs like and extra $30

I remember they had this whole TV investigation on Jiffy Lube, the mechanics are pressured to meet a sales quota so they make up stuff that you don't need...I've read horrer stories from there or they charge you for things they didn't even do, but each to his/her own.

Yea i used to work at one when i was like 17. I remember this one time we ran out of like 50w200 or wat ever diesels use so he only let half the fluid go so we had enough to fill it, lol.

I remember hearing of some stories of jiffy lubes that got commission (we didnt) like they'd wipe the air filter on the bottom of the car to get it dirty, then show it to you and say you needed a new one.

Sometimes they'd leave the old gasket on and put the filter on w/ a new gasket so you have 2. Then it leaks oil, your engine blows and they have to buy you a new engine. That happend twice at other stores when i worked there.

Local Toyota dealer is very fast, efficient and accomodating, so far.

They let you bring in your Costco purchased Mobil 1 and leave off the charge for their normally supplied 5W-30 oil. Works for me.

I treat my two new Toyotas like I did my ALFA's - me, or a trusted mechanic, ONLY. Just like the ALFA's, the Yaris has an Aluminum engine.

Bolt threading and tightening and even coolant are all special, and can cause catastrophic results if done inproperly. Many mechanics are just "butchers".

FYI, Toyota Coolant is a pre-mix of coolant and de-ionized (distilled) water. Regular water in the cooling system will corode the inside of an aluminum engine, eventually clogging up the cooling system.

ADD: Jiffy-Lube LOVES doing "value-added" work - read: unecessary stuff. The idea is to increase the sale to $50+ per an undercover story I saw a couple of years ago. Your local dealer does that too, but atleast there is printed Manufacturer's recommended service plan to follow and judge their recommendations against.

The good news today is that cars take a lot less maintenance today than in previous years. For instance, pre-electronic ignition most cars needed to be tuned-up every 10,000 miles due to point and plug wear. Points? Condensors? Distributor Caps? Remember those???

for those who are at work, they tell you stuff you need to do with the car which you dont actually need, charge you a crap load of money, and they end up not doing anything to your car at all.

I've done my own oil changes. And have a mechanic check my vehicles every 20,000 miles. And I'm on 160,000 miles now with my one truck. My dad took his toyota to a service place(not a toyota dealership) and his car siezed up with a broken cylinder shaft. Never trust anyone that works on your car unless you are allowed to watch them or know them very well.

This is an odd statement, I work for a large tire store chain and I am going to change my oil every 5k like I am supposed to, I will not let the dealer rip me off for any maintence service I can do myself at work. Plus we keep computerized records, if I ever did have a warranty issue with my engine they can not legally deny it because I chose to do my own maintence

hmm cuz i was just wondering, with the video the mech. say that they are gonna service what they need to do with the car but they dont do it.

So if they get commision of the customers bills the mechs will try and raise their bills so their get a higher paycheck

And if they dont, whats the point of tellin the customers they are gonna change the fluids and all that when they are not gonna do it.

I mean, if i was gettin commission and was a dickhead mech i would prob do that.

I understand. I'm just saying as a used car buyer, there is nothing that can make a car more attractive than when the owner walks up with the Toyota warranty guide in hand and every single visit is stamped and has detailed information as to what was done. Its not to say that changing your oil yourself yields any different outcome, but just to have that documentation... I don't know, if you spend the $13k to get the car, whats another 20 or 30 bucks to have them put the oil in for you and stamp your book. You know you leave with a free car wash and inspection anyway.
