What does this thing do in layman's terms?

Seems like a sales gimmick to me but your guess is as good as mine...I'm sure others here can explain, I've never heard of such a device, from reading it seems like B.S.

in laymans terms it means you spend a bunch of money on an engine performance placebo. what a load of crap.

it is just capacitors wired parallel to your battery, which in theroy will have a quicker response to sudden changes in voltae demands....i think...

If you want to get one, get a buddy club condensor

Yes... nothing more than a capacitor...

Generally, you should buy these kind of things after making a major improvement to your engine.

I have one of a similar design on my Laser

basically it a spike protector/capasitor and works like a capasitor for a amplifier
It removes spikes in the power to save overloading aany electracl equipment with too much voltage and also help maintain voltage is levels dip too low

I installed one along with a grouinding kit because I was having prpblems with the charging system, enegine electrcal components as well as lights dimming with the stereo.
I did work as it should for the electrical system but I did not notice any power gains.

how often do people have a 'brown out' or alternator overload in their cars?

Ooh, you should post some pictures and info about your Laser in the off-topic forum for all of us closet DSM people.

... or when you do some major stereo upgrade!

how often do people have a 'brown out' or alternator overload in their cars?

I was running a fairly powerful audio system but even then the stock and aftermarket alternator should have been more then enough. I fried my oem alt and changed it along with a new battery, but and ended up changing then alt 3 more times within 4 months. Each time the volatage regulator was at fault. Several other people on the DSM forums had the same issues.
After talking with a mitsu tuner at mosport he though it was a ground problem and suggested a grounding re-wire set up.
I also picked up the spike protector similar to the one on my boat and used it inline for everything other then the starter cable.
The used 8AWg grounding wire and ran grounds from the battery to the firewall, intake/TB, head, Alt bracket, transmission, exhaust manifold and between the o2 sensor and cat, ignition coil, and both strut towers.

Problem solved.
lights still dimmed with the audio cranked up even with a cap installed but I never had another problem with a ISC, charge system, etc

Again I noticed no performance gain what so ever and did not do it for the performance.

Totally correct:headbang:

My stereo isnt the greatest stuff in the world but its at least 500w + (cheap = less efficient) basically maxes out the stock alt. I have no problems. Like its been said, alt regulators are typically the part that goes. If your battery is up to snuff, the alt works like it should and you have good ground the rest would be negligable. If you run 4ga from the batt. to ground and same on your starter and everythings bolted down like it should be whats the spider web of ground wires actually going to achieve? Overcharging should be noticed right away, the battery will bloat or foam, if the alt is shit the thing wont want to start, battery voltage will be low, running stereo will kill the car. A capacitor is an instant voltage fix - stereo is a perfect example, the capacitor keeps voltage up between amp draws - if the battery / alt dont work the way they should that capacitor wont do a damn thing. Anyway...this seems to fit into the same catagory as the intake temp resistor

I'my guessing that the differnce between this kit and a grouding kit is that this works on the positive not the neg. but what are the difference's in overall power performance; and more so would it be a good idea to do power stabilizer and a grounding kit; or do they do the same thing?
