Custom Exhaust

Got some questions! I'm gonna be getting a custom exhaust, but I've been told to do some research first.

What's more reasonable?? One piece (a little more expensive) or multi pieces?? What's the difference in performance and sound?

How big should I get the piping??
Any other info I need to know??

I also heard that for a Yaris, since it's just a compact, good on gas car, its not worth getting stainless steel cuz that will crack over time and that i'm only gonna shed around 5 lbs anyways so its not worth the extra money!

Stainless will last 10 years or more. I put mine on my laser in 1996 or 97 and it's still looking great, with no rotten areas.
Mine actually came with a 10 year warranty

Regular mild galvinized wont last more then a couple.
Stainless exhaust retains more heat and the hotter you keep the exhaust gasses the faster and easier they flow and this helps make more power. Two exhaust systems the exact same one galvinized the other stainless, the stainless will have a slight advantage.

Multi piece is better as it allows more room for exspansion and movement = less meta fatigue. It also allows for fewer welds. There is no difference in sound or performance between the two styles, the difference comes from the type of bends (crush bent or mandrel bent)
Mandrel bent is the way to go.

2~2.25" is within the optimal range for any 4 cyclinder.

All that being said I would go for a 2 piece, cat back, 2.25" mandrel bent, stainless system.

i would go smaller, like 2" - 2.25" just because the size of the engine. the bigger you go the more restrictive of a muffler you will have to get to reduce sound. enless that is if you like ricer noise, than go for the 2.5 and get a fart can. my aproach, go for 2" stainless, mandrel or crinkle bend it doesnt really matter, and find a nice unrestrictive muffler, i went with magnaflow for my car, as for the wifes yaris i think ill just buy a damn bolt on.

2.25" is a great size for 2.0L+ engine... for a very small 1.5L a size of 2.0" is a lot enough!

Too much bigger exhaut piping result in a lost of torque... not a great idea for a small and low power engine...

2" will be perfect for the 1.5 ive dot it on a 2.0 and it feels great combined with the intake. bigger means exactly as quoted, plus the bigger you go the more pipe to resonate i.e. the louder and or more raspy sounding. as for bend styles. mandrel is good and all but its more for those with forced induction, the smoother the flow of exhaust, the better. as for someone looking to add some high end hp simple inexpensive crinkle cut is fine, there is an extremely small difference on a aplication like the yaris.

heres my exhaust set up on my Zuki Reno. its 2" mandrel with a xl series magnaflow muffler, sorry no fancy shiny fart can, its for performance and sound only.

nice and deep is a good way to explain it, the nice part is when the valve timing kicks in at 4k the intake will join in and make the overall sound of the car great.

Awsome I am thinking of a similar mod, as the car is almost silent now, a little bit of a rumble would be cool, just not that high pitched whine :biggrin:

Hi, I've owned my 1.5 T Sport for a week now and would like to fit a performance rear box as a start. Trouble I'm finding here in the U.K. is all the tuned pipes seem to be for the 1.3 engine only. Does anybody know if the same tail box would fit my 1.5 without any adverse effects? Obi.

OniZuk4, Visited the Envy site. Some nice twin outlet systems and bodywork add-ons for the TS. My wife probably won't appreciate me spending £400 on the exhaust at the moment, but I'll save the site as a 'favourite' on the PC for later. I'd previously found a manufacturer called DNX (marketing through potn.co.uk) who have a flashy demo showing their silencer technology. Do cheap exhausts always mean bad performance? Their Yaris 1.3 polished stainless tailbox is on offer @ £131 with free delivery here in the U.K.

Actually, some cheap mufflers aren't bad at all, I've used some Remus exhausts in the past that were inexpensive, and while a little raspy sometimes, helped performance considerably (Not tested on this car... haven't done the exhaust... yet.) However, yeah, there are some notably bad cheap exhaust companies, PaceSetter, for instance, they're okay, until they start rusting out waaaay too early.

They supply direct fit systems for quite a few car manufacturers & they're made in Germany and Belgium to ISO9000 standards. The Yaris is only Toyota in their range.

I purchased my Yaris a couple of weeks ago with the Dealer installed Borla Exhaust. It's a 2" cat-back system, mandrell bent with twin tail pipes.

I like the sound (puts the kids to sleep in the back-seat!)

Here is my custom axle back setup I fabed up in the shop this afternoon, sorry about the night shots. I used the a small Magnaflow SS muffler and a polished Magnaflow SS 3 inch tip. Painted it all black even though it is stainless just to clean it up under there, and high light the tip. It has an amazing sound, not loud and high pitched, but a nice rumble.
