My Echo has surpassed 200k and as the Yaris has a similar/same engine i was wondering if these engines will eat the valves if the timing chain breaks..

I'd bet on it going "CRUNCH!" It has a 10.5:1 mechanical compression ratio, which doesn't leave a lot of clearance space, and the valve notches on the pistons don't look that deep to me.

Is there a service recommendation for replacing the chain?

Owners manual says to replace at 160,000kms and i now have over 200,000kms
If i were going to keep the car i'd be thinking replacement but i'm hoping to trade it in for a newer Toyota in the next month or so.

that's a large risk you're willing to take, i'd trade it in sooner rather than later if that's the case. as for the damage, I doubt it

you must be smoking GOOD stuffs... Maintenace manual does not state timing CHAIN replacement.

timing chain does not need to be replaced at 160K
the chain should last the life of the engine providing you are using a quality synthetic

BELTS however do need to be changed the Yaris does not have a timing belt

Talking about the Echo not the Yaris.

same engine. no timing chain maintenance required.

I believe it to be an interference motor so, if the chain or tensioner(s) failed, the motor would be toast but as stated, there is no service recommended for the timing chain or the guides. A quality synthetic helps greatly and that's why I stick with a little heavier oil in the car as well.

as already stated:

1nzfe = interference
chain does not need replacing. you'll spend more money on parts and labor installing a new chain than you would for a low mileage longblock lol

Not having the benefit of tearing one of these things down I still suspect that if the chain "breaks" that you're talking metal fragments suddenly being churned into the oil. Not cool for the bearings or VVT mechanism. Why do I suspect that valve work will be just a sideshow in a circus of mechanical mayhem?

it will

fortunately a complete engine can be had for under $400

that's less than most members blow on exhaust systems lol.

$400 for a complete motor or a junk yard salvage?

How about for an AT?

same engine. no timing chain maintenance required. I like learning new stuff. Went back and reread the owners manual and timing chain has no replacement interval, dont know where i got that 160kreplacement figure but i suspect it might have been something the salesman said when i bought the car.
