HI everybody,

I have just joined this wonderful forum, happy to be between you!

I have bought a Sedan Yaris 3 months ago ( brand new ).

When I pass over some speed bump or something like that, I feel something jumps up in the engine compartment, as if something is loose ...

Has anybody have a similar experience?

Check that your air cleaner cover is properly latched down. I have seen it a couple of times where a quick oil change place or an inspection will do a `courtesy check' of your fluids and filters and either forget or not figure out how to snap the cover clips back into proper position.

Thank you for your answer but the sound clearly comes from engine compartment.

Beside that, I hear this sound when the front wheels are passing on a speed bump or something. :iono:

Thanks for your answer... But what I hear seems to be the sound of a HEAVY thing jumping up and down... Doesnt seem to be something like air cleaner cover or similar things... But I am going to check it anyway...

Wait till everything cools down and check to see if the exhaust is loose anywhere?

It's under warranty so take it to the dealer!

Mine was doing that. Found out the spare tire wasnt completely tightend down. Now the spare tools jump around a bit and clang around now too.

Thank you my friend for sharing your experience. But in my case it cant be spare tire because the sound comes from engine not from trunk.

Thank you anyway ...

check the motor mounts......? its the only thing i can think of, but if the car is new it shouldnt be an issue, how fast are you going over the speed bumps?

Not that fast... say 25km/h

It is most likely the motor mounts. If you look at how they are made and put together, they move front to back AND up and down. It doesn't take much to jiggle the engine up and down. I am betting that your mounts aren't on quite right, or they are bad from the factory. It's the only thing I can think of. That and the battery, but that would be obvious... just grab the battery, and push really hard towards the back, then yank on it to bring it foreward. If it moves, tighten down the 10mm nut on it.

Open up the hood and look. My guess is that the catalytic perverter has a heat shield - many do - and it might have come loose. I've had this problem with a Honda in the past, and it "rattled" when I would hit bumps in the road.

yes i have that noise also not sure what it is, sometimes i hear it from engine bay and sometimes from underneath. also there are noises from the fuel tank when i tap with my hand on the tank , i hear some type of noises which can be what we hear on bumps

You are aware that the Yaris has FAR less sound proofing than most cars made today or in the past?

I've heard braking noises, gear train noises, exhaust rumblings and when I drive over road salt and gravel sounds like someone is pouring pea gravel onto a soda can.

I wonder if what you're experiencing is just the normal "sounds" of a Yaris?

Ive gotten used to all of the random sounds and road noise/things sound like they are bouncing, now I just pay attention enough to know when something is rubbing/creaking, etc.

If you have doubts, have it checked though

I investigated it deeper. I THINK I made a mistake... The sound seems to come from the steering box?! ( It's route is vague )

And one other sound! I hear a rattling sound when I reverse the car, especially when the engine is cold ( in the mornings ) !!! But as soon as I change the shift to D ( going forward ), the rattling sound disappears!

Sounds dumb, but check the hood prop rod to make sure it's latched on top of the battery where it's supposed to be. The geniuses who did my oil change forgot to do this and I had a banging sound coming from the engine compartment when I went over bumps. I checked under the hood when I got home and VOILA... there was the hood prop rod, just laying on top of the battery, not latched in.

Thank you all,

I am very confused, maybe the sound is normal but this is not my first car. Even the used cars I owned haven't had such a sound when I pass over a sharp pavement bulge.

i've found a rattling noise recently, but have figured out how to stop it. i first noticed it when i would close my doors, i'd hear it in the engine bay. so i opened it and started tapping on the top of the bumper to recreate the noise and sure enough.. to keep it from rattling, i would press hard on the metal that the bumper is fastened to and tap the bumper. no noise. almost sounds like a nut or bolt jiggling around in some hidden metal compartment... =\

Sorry dear, I checked the battery , unfortunately the source was not that :frown:

Mine too has a strange noise coming from engine bay. It's random and sounds like a really bad CV Joint. Like a pop sort of. Never figured out what it was. Is yours similar sounding?

My engine rattle comes from the air filter. The inlet tube(the kinda spirally black plastic piece in front of the actual air box) is loose(broken?) and vibrates against the airbox with the engine vibration. I'm gonna epoxy it some day, but I'm pretty lazy.

I also have the rattle from the TSB (http://www.etimago.com/yaris/TSB/T-SB-0304-08%20(Upper%20Instrument%20Panel%20Rattle).pdf), but that one is clearly coming from the dash, not the engine.

Is yours sound like a heavy thing jumping up and down when you pass over pavement upward bulges?

I don't think so. Never realized how hard describing sounds are. I don't know what it could be.
