HELP...I'm changing the springs/shocks...where to jack up?

I'm going to be getting to this long awaited project and I'm curious where the best place is to jack up on the front and rear ends when doing each side. Also, on all of the DIY guides, I don't see anything about how to get the rear shocks off...is it just held on by the two bolts in the hatch area where you pop the plastic top off?

One other question is when using the box wrench to get the top off of the front struts, do I take those all the way off or will the spring fly underneath? I know it's kind of a dumb question but want to cover all of my bases. I'd imagine you have to take the bolts off of that top hat area under the hood so you can actually get the strut top hat off, but just not sure.

and i'd recommend removing your wiper tray to access the top bolts.

the top bolts only hold the struts in place. there's another bolt underneath that holds the spring perch on.

an impact gun will make your life SO much easier if you have access to one.

thanks for the heads up on the bolts, i feel better knowing the spring isn;t going to fly off and damage me by undoing the top hat bolts in the engine bay.

One other question I have is since I'm using Tokico shocks with this spring install, there's no need to cut the bumpstop right? From my understanding, I would need to cut it if I was using the stock shocks/struts but since I'm not using those and I'm using the Tokicos, there would be no need to.

no they didn't. i'm guessing i'm supposed to use the factory stops, but i'm thinking not supposed to cut them since the new tokicos are stiffer, so no need to cut in the first place.

the stiffness of the shock has nothing to do with the cut dimension of the bumpstop.

if you're lowering 2"

cut off 2" of bumpstop.

so if the shock is stiffer, then what would be the sense of cutting the bumpstop? It's kind of contradicting to cut something that stops travel of the shock, yet the shock it's on is stiff enough that it wouldn't need to be done. I'm just trying to understand is all.

because the shock does not support the vehicle.

the spring does.

if your spring drops the car 2" you'd want to remove 2" of bumpstop so you don't bounce off the bumpstop itself except for extreme conditions. this allows your new stiffer shocks to actually do their job.

:eek: For warranty purposes , yes it is , Toyota does not recomend cutting
bump stops with it's TRD products . But other after market shocks and spring
set ups it may require this to be done , as you stated :thumbsup: ,for you to get the
best preformance/handling from them.:bow::bow:

That's why I'm in a tangle. The tokicos are for "lowered" applications and comparable to the TRD shocks, I thought when pairing up the "upgraded" shocks/struts like these with lowering springs, nothing needs to be cut. only with the stock shocks/springs because of how soft they are compared to the trd/tokicos.



I'm getting ready right now to go outside and install the springs and shocks! Wish me luck guys, I'll need it lol. Also, the spring settling period..is it based more on how much you drive or by time? I drive alot so I need to know if they will settle sooner because of that so that I don't wait too long to get the alignment. Or do they take time to settle no matter how much you drive?

A good rule is about 2 weeks of settling. If you drive alot, then you'll be fine with 2 weeks.

One of my "durrrr" moments in life, I was still really tired from staying up late last night. Took me a minute to realize that while holding the allen key and the wrench, I was turning right instead of left with the wrench. No wonder why it was being a bastard, was tightening it haha.

I'm about half way done, the spring compressor I had was garbage. Waiting for a corner shop to finish swapping everything over for the front struts then I'll be well on my way to the rears. Pics later

A spring compressor is a good idea in the front, but the rears will just fall out - they take minutes to change out.

Yes it was the front's I'm having swapped over. Should be done here soon with that and then I'll be well on my way to finishing up.

hmm, i guess i just do it differently than most... i've never needed a spring compressor. i find them to be more dangerous in most cases (lightweight vehicles) than they're worth.
