I was driving the car yesterday around the streets and the highway and I hate that the steering wheel doesn't go down more. Its like up in the air at its all the way down setting. This is the 2007 Hatch BTW...

then you aren't sitting up straight. or you're short =xI'm not short I'm 17 5'11" and I'm sitting up straight. I mean its driveable yeah but I like it down just a little bit more then what it allows you. Just my preference.

wheel is fine for me and I am pretty picky. Try some different positions.
I keep my steering wheel on the high position, when you drop it down it just feels weird. I like it.

I leave mine all the way up some time I actually wish it could go up a tad more

the wheel position is excellent for me too. how're u gonna control the car anyways with a lowered wheel, lie down on your knees ?

I'm 6'2" and a tad over 200lbs, and I have no problems with the steering wheel in my 08 LB. I am constantly amazed when I hear people complain about it, I find it to work quite well. I am not that enamored with telescopic steering wheels, I've never really felt the need to have one...

maybe if you were 7 to 8 inches shorter you'd understand. it's not something i lose sleep over but allowing the steering wheel to adjust to all differing heights would be nice.

Everytime you think of that remember that you payed, what.. 12k for your yaris? It can't have everything.

yeah i didn't start the thread i was just agreeing with the OP. like i said it's not like i'm losing sleep over it. if it was THAT important i wouldn't have bought the car.

I'm 5'6" and if the steering wheel could go about an inch lower, it'd be perfect. It's not important, but I understand the OP's perspective.
A telescoping wheel would be nice, too, but as Zing said, an econobox can't have everything...

The only issue I have with it is that it's a bit of a far reach at the noon position. Lengthening the steering column a couple inches would fix that. Other that it's perfectly fine, and feels really good during white-knuckle driving

yeah the steering wheel could be a little longer, but overall i'm fine with how it is.

Same as you, it would be perfect if the steering wheel can go a bit close to me. But 12k for a yaris, can't expect too much...
So I'm going to get a new steering wheel:evil:

I really don't understand. I'm 6'1 and my girlfriend is 5'4. We can both reach any part of the steering wheel with ease. Are you guys just goin for the gangster lean??

It would just be better if it went down a few more inches that what I'm saying. And thanks for making me burst out laughing and almost spit my soda onto my screen.

I'm 6ft and I wish I did'nt feel like I'm driving a bus at times. I slide the seat all the way back. No "gangsta lean".
Bring that steering wheel 1 inch closer please Toyota!

exactly what i mean... you have to be either short as hell or you just aren't sitting up straight which 90% of drivers dont sit up straight... (percentage not actually factual... but i mean... i see MOST people not sitting up straight everyday)'
And if you are tall.... then you are lucky... you dont need the steering wheel closer... just drive with ur knees man =P

Have you guys tried putting spacers or washers in between steering shaft and where it bolts onto the dash? Maybe that could work. I think from memory there are four 12mm bolts holding it up.

Lower? If it were any lower it would be touching my legs with the seat all the way back. I'm 6'2" 215#. It also makes it a bit difficult to get in an out. I actually wish it would telescope. But like the man said, you get what you pay for. I have no real problems with it or I wouldn't have bought it. I still luv my Lil' Blue. = )

I am 1.83m (=6 ft) tall and it works good.
Is your steering wheel length and height adjustable in den US? I am asking because my european one is length and height adjustable and my drivers seat is height adjustable too from factory. That makes it alot easier.
IllusionX
06-01-2009, 11:54 AM
the US sedan gets hight adjustable driver seat.
i'm 5'6", and the steering wheel height is just perfect at lowest. I can steer with my knee with ease. I think there's only about 2-3 inches at all times in between. I do wish it was telescopic though, i must have short arms..
I also wish the steering wheel would go down more. 1" to 2" lower would be awesome.

i don't see why some of us wanting it to go just a tad lower is so hard for some of ya'll to grasp. i don't think it's anything we are doing wrong it's just a preference. it's really not so hard to understand. i don't even know why some of you are being so resistant to the idea. it's kinda funny really.

I like the whole steering system myself. I was really pleased to find the adjustable wheel on such an inexpensive vehicle. All the other bare bone cars I've had have had no steering adjustmnets at all.

No matter how tall you are at the lowest setting, it has that high feel to it which I don't care for. I'll stress this again, its not a problem of reaching, we just like it down a few more inches.

It could definitely go lower. I'm 5'8" and it bothers me. But I absolutely hate the seat belt. It goes across my neck. Should be adjustable.

damn i'm gonna check if mine is adjustable lol
but so far so good, love the height!

at first it was awkward when i bought my yaris, but after awhile i got used to it, now i usually just decline the butt part of my seat all the way down and move the back rest part of the chair a little back to relax and extend my left arm out to the steering wheel which is all the way down, and just drive and i feel comfortable now. i have a 08 sedan by the way:thumbup:

Mine is all the way up.

yes all of us that would like it lower are 4'10" and 80lbs. how did you know?
on that note...
All the way up? lol
What are you some kind of fat ass that your legs won't fit under on the lowest setting?
like i been saying it's a preference... it's really not a matter of anyone sitting incorrectly or being misshaped. is that really so hard for some of you.

I have racing seats and sit on the floor practically, I've been looking into customizing the wheel column to have it a tad lower. . .Or I need to grow arangatang arms >.<

It could be my 5' 8'' dimensions are closer to the average Japanese driver than the average American driver 'cause the interior of most toys, especially the Yaris fit me great.

I sit correctly in the seat and use two hands on the wheel. I have no complaints about the wheel but whish it was telescoping as I am 6'2 and I have to set the seat a little more back then I'd like to.

I guess it is more about where one places their hands on the wheel. I like it higher because I hold the wheel with one hand at 6 or 7 O'clock where I can relax my arm on my leg. So there's about 4" between my legs and the bottom of the wheel.
Those that old the wheel at 12 O'clock need it lower.
So no, I'm not a fat ass, just a bodybuilder for 13 years which does make my legs a little thicker than normal.

The seat belt height is adjustable, look at it, it's pretty self explanatory. Just push in the two side tabs and then it can move up and down.

the 6 oclock spoke is by far the worst thing about the steering wheel everything else i can deal with but the fact is its so uncomfortable to one hand while riding on a gangster lean or riding dirty if you will. i only find the need to drive like that on certain occasions i drive normal most of the time haha

The only thing I don't like about the steering wheel is that it is not leather wrapped. OTOH, I couldn't see paying for the Sport Package just for the leather wrapped steering wheel...

Do what I did.....buy a gently used leather steering wheel and swap out the plastic one! Best $100 I've spent so far.
