What is the widest width rim that will fit without rubbing or spacers?

I'm running 17"x7-1/2" rims, with no drop, no rubbing at all

for most 7-8" width is more than enough... I fit some 15x9's on mine with some 195/50/15 tires and there was no rubbing :smile:

I believe they where in the et20 to et30 range... not sure. They where old wheels off my friends VW and I just threw them on to see how they'd look. They poked out a little too much for my taste, but still looked good and where driveable.

I have a new set of wheels I'll try to fit this week, but they may take a little work... 16x8 +25 front and 16x8 +15 rear. I picked up some 195/45/16 tires which I need to get mounted.

I have a sedan with 7.5 wide tires and a 1.75 drop,and I scrub the wells often when I have 4 people in the car,or the trunk loaded.

offset is just as key as width.

and I lay in bed praying the yaris community will use proper sized tires for their wheels. please don't stretch a tire!! these aren't VW's

For me...it's up in the air.
I like a little stretch...but those dub guys are over the top with their 185s on 10" wheels with the lip of the rim sticking 3" past the fender.

i currently run a 235 on my 8.5" wheels on my STi and that is almost too much stretch for me.

there is no purpose for stretching a tire like that, it does no good.

i think some 205s on a 7" wheel would look killer. maybe get some custom panasports in 15x9 and slap on some 255s :)

You guys are too old skool :rolleyes: There is nothing wrong with a stretched tire and many times they run better. I agree it's never good to over do it, but have to admit I'm guilty of it sometimes... I run 235/40/18's on 9.5" up front and 265/35/18 on 10.5" on my Z :laugh:

I used to run 215/40/18 on 10's and 235/40/18 on 12's :biggrin:

One thing is for sure, there is NOTHING worse than running sunk in wheels with crappy offsets! If I can only pass on one important tip to anyone modifying their car it would be to run the RIGHT offset so that the wheel is flush with the fender of the car. :thumbsup:

I really hate going back and forth on these types of topics, the fact is I agree with you and I realize you aren't arguing just wanting to make your point that you feel tires should only be mounted on "recommended width rims" which I agree with for the most part and for most general consumers/users this is the safe or easy way to go.

The original poster asked "how wide can you fit" which to me can mean he's thinking "wider is better" for performance, or he could just be looking for better looks and is willing to push the envelope but without having to roll the fenders or use spacers. I was simply stating that I like the wider wheel look also, and to fit wider wheels on a car like this it's sometimes necessary to stretch the tire (which also adds to the good looks in my oppinion).

I also feel that with most street tires on the market, you can improve the response and feel of the tire by stretching the sidewall, which I know you'll hate hearing, but It's just an oppinion based on how the cars feel to me. I know it sounds strange and there are probably hundreds of books to disprove this, but for me it works and I know I'm not the only one. There is also the slight benefit of the reduced diameter from the stretched tire, as well as the slightly stiffer sidewall. All these factors add up to make for a different feel and different grip characteristics which can be good or bad depending on your desired results.

you just need to find a tire with a stiff enough sidewall.

the Bridgestone Potenza RE070s are the stiffest sidewall of any street tire (comes factory on the STi's).

IMHO if you want to push the envelope, you need to be ready to use a fender roller/puller. "widest wheels on stock body with no mods or rubbing or issues" isn't pushing the limit.

I simply disagree that it'll make the car look better, with a crap tire being stretched does help with response (assuming it isn't too stretched), but this can be fixed by using a GOOD tire.

any, once our Yaris rolls in we'll be doing some serious tire testing to see how wide we can go.

15x8.5s are tough to come by though ;)

I just bought 20 x 7.5 and 225/30/zr20 rubber. It is serious close to the inner fenders (duh...) the 225 seem to be a max as far as width is concerned. Im not finding too much of an issue with rubbing anywhere but part of the frame that runs behind the strut is very close on full lock. I dont know if this is a function of tire dia. or width exactly but at full lock the frame is within millimeters of the rubber. It looks like youll be stuck rolling the fenders or suffer rubbing on the strut going wider if your going for a larger dia. rim and wider rubber (depending on offset).

I also have a tiny bit of rub on the inside frame rail (behind the strut) at full lock when I run the 17x7 +38's with a 215/45/17 tire. This can be corrected by going with a shorter or narrower tire, or by running 3-5 mm spacer, but it hasn't bothered me since I rarely go full lock (usually only when making U-turns).

If I remember correctly the offset on my wheels is something like 40 - 42mm
The rubber doesnt hang over the rim much but at full lock I think I have about 3mm from the leading edge of the tire to the inner fender / frame rail.

JUST CURIOUS...for those of us with our 15x7" rims what is a nice tire size for those , larger that what is on them stock but I guess if you go too larger is not good either on a 7" rim...?

The most i've stretched was 185/60 on a 14x8.5 ... this was on a AE86 1985 toyota corolla... drift car. i like stretched

16x8 +25 with 195/45/16 tires is flush with -1.8 deg camber up front and -1.3 camber rear (lowered 2" all around)

Anything from 185-225 will "work" but it depends on your offset and if you plan to lower the car. Most common size is 205/50/15 or 195/55/15, if you don't car about looks and want a taller and wider tire to fill the wheel gap, you can fit a 225/50/15 but the tire will bulge and hang over the edge of the wheel just a little. It still looks fine.
