View Full Version : Bottoming out while heavy breaking/turning

I had gone over a curb, they replced everything from th oil pan to the xmember to the entire exhaust.

I'm on TRD springs, Tokico Blue hock, TRD reaer Sway.

Under very fast heavy braking I sometimes feel something like the tranny bottoming out/grinding. Toyota dealer offered to look at it but they just usually baby drive. Do you thik I am just pushing the limits of the TRD springs?

Its really not repeatable, only happens under the worst abuse, do you thik it is worth a trip back to the colllision center?

Time to stop abusing a Yaris??

what's your tire air pressure, and how much did you cut off your bump stops when you installed the suspension?

Or are you confusing the "sandpaper" feel of the ABS with something bottoming out.

But Yeah - tire pressures?

try smoothing out your driving style, remember SMOOTH = FAST

You know I've ever owned an ABS veicle, this maybe it. It is like a sandpaper grabbing and releasing quickly.

Cars are built for us to drive hard. I have owned 12 cars in 20 years and enjoyed pushing their limits. Only car I couldnt kill was an eg civic

There you go! it's probably the abs doing its thing.

Go find some slippery surface and do some heavy braking to try to replicate the feeling.

sounds like abs, you might be able to easily deactivate it for your hard driving days...

not recommended... you'll be HATING life.. instant brake lockup

It is definately NOT instant lock up, The car is fine without it. You just have to be smooth on the brakes and modulate the pedal.

Tamago is right, you could be on the bump stops. My car never exibits this behavior and I am lower than you are.

Mine has no abs and the only time I lock up the brakes is when I'm being an idiot.

Another thing to check is the plastic inner-fender liner. I had a similar problem and it turns out I was rubbing on it (with stock wheels and tires) because it had popped in. I just pushed on it to pop it back into place. Mine was never in an accident or anything, I assume its from autocorssing.

have you driven an abs equipped toyota with the relay removed? the brake booster is especially touchy on abs equipped models.

there is a difference between having no ABS and having ABS disabled though...

Yes and Subarus as well. Like I said.. you just have to be smooth. I've only done it on the track though, not on the street.

Yes if you start stabbing at the brake pedal, you are going to lock the wheels.

ahh, well you're good then!

i didn't realize there was a difference (abs deactivated vs non-abs), but that makes sense seeing how abs needs to pump the brakes so rapidly

abs really gets in the way on smooth and dry surfaces, where it's not needed so much, but comes into play anyways.. on gravel and wet, it has it's ups ;D

No real point in disabling it for the street though. It is no fun driving around on D shaped tires.

I locked the front wheels once in the Yaris (non ABS car) and flatspotted the front tires in a panic brake situation from 90 to about 30. It put a bad flat spot on the fronts.

Luckily I needed new tires anyway.

The non ABS cars have a more linear brake feel so you can modulate better.

ABS cars are generally have more boos and are less linear to give lots of brake with minimal pedal travel, and the ABS will modulate if necessary.

i'd like to see someone out-brake my ABS with EBD on dry pavement :D it's superb, in fact i genuinely feel that in a straight line, current ABS systems will easily out perform the average driver's foot

I agree. the key word is average.
