Thanks to Tamago for the great idea. I went to Midas the other day and had them do the work. I was only 70 buck and I couldn't be happier with the result. It pops, gargles, back fire and it is sound amazing. I'll try and get a sound clip at a later time.

I want to do that but I'm afraid it's going to sound like absolute crap.

PS the guy did a pretty ugly job welding that flange on. Sheesh.

lilredrocket
06-08-2009, 10:45 PM
For $70 I'm not complaining. Its ulgy because he had to reuse the flang off the old muffler. If you like a little bit raspier sound this is the exhaust for you

During the process of changing axlebacks I started the car up and gave it a few revs, I imagine this sounds similar.

Probably. I want the HKS exhaust and I wanted noise now so this was alot better than $350.

If you choose later on to go ahead and take the end off a bit, then add a resignated tip, it could calm down some of that raspier tone. Not a whole lot tho...

Get a vid up quick, I am considering having my exhaust done like this at a later date.

I want to hear this thing too. I bet it sounds scary, just hopefully in a good way : )

You even saved a little weight by getting rid of our party keg muffler.

Found my video camera but the link cable was lost somewhere :frown:. Ill go pick up a new cable tomorrow on my way home from work. Custome Liftback are you going to be at the NST event this sunday? Sabertooth believe it or not I actually like a raspy tone. I also have not had a tip scream "Pick me" oreven seen one that I half way would consider. So I think black paint will have to do for now.

This is a pretty good mod for the money involved. I'm pricing it out on my side of town now. I drove LRR's car when we were over at his house on the 5th and it sounds good. I only got it up to 20-25mph though in the neighborhood but it sounded nice and not too loud inside the car.

It's a little raspy but it's still got a tough little tone that will easily compare with some of the ricer exhausts out there. As far as the noise from outside the car, you can probably hear it from half a block away when he's driving toward us in the neighborhood. I'm sure it's louder on the highway or when he's out dodging speed bumps. :)

A nice sound for the car. :)

Hello, my name is S.R. and I'm a copycat.

I had this done a couple of weeks ago after hearing and driving LRR's car. I love the sound of it and it hasn't affected my mpg that much, however, it definitely encourages harder launches from red lights and heaven forbid I find an overpass to cruise under.

There's one minor detail that I hadn't thought of though and I found out about it yesterday afternoon when I painted the pipe with high heat black paint. The pipe is melting part of my back bumper. There's a half-circle just above the pipe that's melted off and dripped into a nice black blob on top of the exhaust pipe.

I'm not happy about that but I figure that I'll look for something to fix it with, maybe a piece of diamond plate or something cut to dress up the melted edge of the plastic. I'm not sure what I'll do yet but it needs to be fixed before it gets worse and with air temps aiming for 103* by the middle of the week it's bound to get worse.

1. how close is the pipe to the bumper?
2. does the pipe protrude past the bumper?

Ok, here's a couple of pictures that I just took with my cell phone out in the parking lot. When the pipe was first put on it and the car was still up on the rack, it looked like there would be about an inch of clearance between the underside edge of bumper and the pipe but now I can clearly see this isn't the case.

The pipe is actually touching the bumper and the bumper extends past the edge of the pipe 3-4 inches. The melting did not occur at the end of the exhaust tip but about 6 inches back from the tip where the edge of bumper rests against the pipe.

I know I'm probably repeating myself but that's a bad habit of mine. :)

From what I can see there doesn't appear to be any damage/melting/bubbling of the paint where the exhaust tip rests below the bumper. This could change though as air temp climbs in the coming months so I'll definitely have to keep an eye on it.

Maybe I can find a nice piece of black diamond plate to put back there on the bottom edge of the bumper that will act like a heat guard or something.

Wow! they did a really crappy job on your muffler delete. :frown:

The melted bumper is beyond repair. So You can trim it to remove the melted area and increase the clearance...

The bend over the axle doesn't look good either. If you were to lower your car or in full compression situations it looks like the axle would hit the pipe.

Thanks for the replies :) I do appreciate them.

Castrex, that's the factory bend over the axle. When the car was up on the lift I pointed to where I wanted him to cut the pipe and he cut it about 3" away from the muffler (towards the front of the car). I've got the muffler at the house so I can post pictures of it tonight when I get home from work.

I'll go out to the car in a few minutes and see if I can get some better pictures with my phone from the side to show the angle and length of the pipe and the bend over the axle. If I can find a ruler or something to measure with, I'll use that in the picture as well as a reference point.

Then you are good  is probably the angle of the picture...

SaerinRhoe
06-22-2009, 07:15 PM
Ok, here's 4 more pics of the underside. Where the bend comes over the rear axle it appears (by my mark .5 eyeball) to be 4"-5" of clearance with the pipe. I took a ruler out with me and tried to measure the gap but I couldn't get it close enough while lying on the 100* pavement. :)

http://www.yarisworld.com/forums/picture.php?albumid=173&pictureid=1220
^ The markings on the ruler are mostly washed out but it's the best I could do with my cell phone.

http://www.yarisworld.com/forums/picture.php?albumid=173&pictureid=1222
^ This shows the slant of the pipe as it comes out to the rear of the car. The parking lot is not level and the nose of the car sits about an inch 'lower' than the back of the car due to the grade of the pavement.

http://www.yarisworld.com/forums/picture.php?albumid=173&pictureid=1223
^ This picture shows the distance from the end of the pipe to the edge of the bumper. The portion of the bumper that melted is not visible in this picture but is about 5" towards the front of the car along the pipe.

http://www.yarisworld.com/forums/picture.php?albumid=173&pictureid=1221
^ I don't know if this pic is worth anything to those that have replied but here it is anyway.

Hope these help and thanks for your comments,

S.R.

How do you like the sound of your new set up?

I had something like this (with a magnaflow glaspack on the back) on my car but the droning was really tire over long trips... but since I couldn't give up the AMAZING sound... I had to do what any enthusiast would have done ...

I installed a flanger where the OE flanger was and now I have 2 exhaust that I can swap in about 15 minutes.

The Magnaflow killer one.... for when I go out for a spirited drive:evil:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A6Pp1IuJzG8

And a chambered muffler... for when I'm driving with the GF
I don't have a video for this one but it is just halfway between the Magnaflow and the stock muffler.

I really like the sound but almost all the driving I do is city based so it's 0-45-0 in the space of a couple of miles. I've not had it on the highway for more than half an hour at a time and I don't think it's too loud.

I'll be giving it a test sometime this week though depending on where our monthly meet ends up being and then a trip to an autocross and then down to Houston on the 12th.

But so far, windows up or windows down, I like it. It's a little more 'droning' with the windows up but if it gets to be too much then I just ease up on the gas a bit and it quiets down.

As for your vid, I like the sound of the exhaust you have. It's tighter than the straight pipe and it sounds a little better at idle. I think the one thing that I don't like about mine is that for the first couple of mph, say 0-4 or 5mph, it sounds all breathy and bubbly like it's making motorboat noises in the bathtub or something. Other than that, as LRR would say, it's the tits.

Thank you for posting up th vid Tamago have been having trouble with doing mine. Schleppy the best person to ask that would be SaerinRhoe because he has it done and he got to drive my car after I had mine on. Another good source to ask would be is Lazerdot he has heard both mine and SaerinRhoe's from outside while we were driving. I have yet to hear SaerinRhoe's exhaust having moved away from that area (about 3.5 hours to the south) I didn't get to make it to the Yaris Yak (our get together) that we try to have monthly.

Tamago, is there any way you guys could get audio from behind the car, like a normal sound check would be of an exhaust. I know the autocross vid helps alot, but its a distant tone. Many people here are hoping to hear it up close.
