Did you get the chance to visit Boracay Island and/or Sicogon?
I use to fly guests/tourists there.

The city is really polluted, but the provinces are not bad.

I attended college in Manila and so glad to be out of there now but I can't really say that LA is any better =/

But there are still some nice little known places there.. like the beaches in Region V

I was staying with a family who lived in Meckawayan (sp???)

it was poor but the people were cool and i remember buying a pack of Marlboro's for 30 cents and few cases of San Miguel for a few bucks

it was awesome, you could smoke and get drunk for like 2 bucks a night!

What I will never understand is why the PI has the biggest mall in Asia and has numerous "mega" malls.

makati and meycauayan(in bulacan)...glad that u had fun...san miguel is the best beer...:biggrin:...grew up in manila, left there when i was 11 (1987)...went back few times...remember in early 80's when we used to go to luneta and ccp...good times...when we were lil kids my mom would always tell us stories about wwii and it reminds me a lot like that on youtube video...

boracay is one of the best beach in the world but it's too trendy for me now, would rather go to some other unknown beach...

lols. you get that everywhere specially in manila..they dont get paid enuff.. last time i was there some scronny kid want to push my cart which was loaded and he can barely do it..told him ill do it myself..and he still ask for tip..told him tarantado ka ba!! lolz.

consumer culture? idk... When I first move to LA, I was surprised how early the malls close. I used to live close to big malls in the PI and they stay open really late.

Ahh, the Philippines. My scope of experience there was rather limited but quite colorful.

I was stationed in Subic Bay for several months and I had an apartment in Olongopo. I still tell the story of hanging off the back of a jeepney (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jeepney) all the way from Olongopo to Barrio Barretto. :biggrin:

What I remember the most from those times was an entire string of towns set up for no purpose other than catering to and fleecing from U.S. Sailors and Marines. Lots of cheap alcohol (Mojo, anyone?), lots of cheap prostitutes, lots of cheap trinkets and clothing, cheap transportation, cheap lodging, cheap food, hot, humid weather, lots of petty crime and lots of honking jeepneys and trikes.

I used to work in the clinics in the town of Olongopo from time to time, testing for venereal diseases among the bar girls as part of maintaining their government-issued health cards. Some of those girls were straight from tiny villages and were as wide eyed and giddy as one can be but others were seasoned workers that knew how to make me blush, which seemed to be their favorite game to play. Every one of them claimed to be a student though I never saw a book.

I only went through Manila twice, on my way to and from a visit to a friend's family in the Valparaiso area. Like all other large cities I did not like it. Smoggy, polluted, dirty, crowded, noisy, too many buildings blocking the breezes... no, thanks.

My favorite time was attending a wedding on the beaches near Cebu though that experience was marred by being pressured into eating Balut (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Balut_(egg)) which I did not care for one bit.

I learned how to cook Adobo (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Adobo#Philippine_adobo) and still do so to this day (my wife likes it, too), though I never learned how to cook the other staples like Pancit and Lumpia. I used to use Bagoong Alamang (a briny shrimp paste) with the Adobo but my wife put a stop to that.

While I understand the need for independence, and therefore the closing of the bases in the Philippines, I will miss the area of Subic Bay from that time. It was a truly rowdy and bawdy place (at least when a fleet was in) that was a favorite among ports of call for U.S. servicemen.
