View Full Version : twm short shifter installed!
GF bought me the twm short shifter for my bday!! Installed it right away on my sedan!
Very easy install!!!! BUT i found the uninstalling part pretty damn difficult!!! without the dremel to cut the small clip was a pain!! was trying to wedge and wedge and pry and pry.... extremely frustrating! at one point, my screwdriver slipped and my knuckle got scraped! Blood was shed during the uninstallation ! Then prying 2 screwdrivers into the slot and trying to pop that cap off was painful too... everything was extremely tightly fitted! But once that was done, it took me like 25 mins or less to put things back together!
The shifter is awesome! No complaints at all. Not too short and it looks really good! Ill try and post a pic soon! Camera is charging :)

dngz hey nice shift knob... question for you. yours is a yaris sedan i believe. I see it is with power windows but your stereo is not integrated... how did you do that? in our area.. if you choose +power package they make the stereo HU intergrated... it's pain in the a$$ to change the HU to an aftermarket one unlike yours.
Mine headunit is stock! There are two types out there. Most American, or not all, have the intergrated HU with the buttons on the side and the screen in the middle. I think you can change that and you can buy the stuff from the factory. Ask around in the Audio/Sound forum. I don't kno much about the sound system for everything related to that on my car is stock! Sorry!

Looking good, glad to hear you're happy with the short shifter (http://www.twmperformance.com/shortshifters/toyotashortshifters/toyotayaris-2006-shortshifters.htm)! Thanks for posting up the pics.
I agree that the metal clip on the side of the assembly can be tough the first time. I always slice it with a Dremel then it comes off really easily.
Good job, it looks sharp ;)

Hi wlfpck,
We do not have a short shifter (http://www.twmperformance.com/) at this time for the 90-93 accord, however we may develop one in the future. If you would like to sign up to our newsletter at www.twmperformance.com you will be notified upon its release.

Is it easy for everyday use?
Isn't it very short?Does the short shifter reduce the 0-80mph time?
ChinoCharles

They have throw reduction figures on their web site.
Yes, you will get to 80 mph faster with a short shifter.

Τhis is interesting....
lol, yea its good for everyday use! It's perfect height for me! my elbow rests on the storage unit in the mid and my hand is almost level to the shifter!
Excuse my ignorance but is that the whole assembly or just the stick?
you just get the short shifter, a little replacement clip for the one you will probably end up cutting off or bending off, and another tool to remove the plastic piece attached to the bottom of the stock shifter.
boot, shift knob, & anything else u see not included
oh yea, and by whole assembly meaning shift knob and stuff.. if you buy the short shifter and a knob, u mite get a discount on the knob??? not quite sure, sumbody please correct me if im wrong!!!!

Hey I asked this guy Kevin at TWM about fitting a 1.5 liter yaris sedan.
This is what he told me. It may be helpful to you, it may not, but I figure its worth a shot..
Hello,
Thank you for your interest in our products. Our Yaris short shifter
has
been tested in the 2007 Yaris Hatch, but based on our experience with
Toyota cars over the past 5 years they never change shift assemblies
from
one trim level of car to another. For example our Echo short shifter
fits
both the hatch and the sedan as they share the same shift assembly.
If you order the short shifter and it does not fit for some strange
reason, we would refund your purchase 100%. I can almost guarantee you
that the short shifter we offer for the 2006 and up Yaris will fit.
Here is a link to the page where you would order from if you decide to
go
ahead with the purchase, or feel free to call us toll free at
1-877-655-0540.

It would, but it is an ugly rubber piece, which is why I'm wondering about a nice stitched leather boot

I am actually going to do a DIY - Short Shift Kit, so that will pretty much sum up the process. I'll leave my commentary as well:smile:
If you have access to a dremel tool or any type of electric/air rotary cutting tool the short shifter install is easier. The install goes better with the help of a friend also, there are a couple of plastic clips to depress to get the top off of the assembly that are easier with the help of someone who can hold a screwdriver. The only part of the install that is sometimes difficult is removing the clip on the passenger side of the shift assembly.
The first method I use involves 2 flat head screwdrivers and a hammer. I usually hammer a small, thin flat head screwdriver between the clip and the plastic assembly. Once the first screwdriver is between the plastic assembly and the clip, I use another larger flat head screwdriver to pry the clip by inserting it in to the gap created by the first screwdriver. You can work your way around the clip prying with the large screwdriver to work it off. I usually try to break the clip, since once it is cracked it comes off very easily. If you break the clip, don't worry since we provide replacement clips with the shifter kit.
The second method I use, if you have access to a Dremel or any rotary cutting tool, is easier. Using the rotary cutting tool and a cutting disc, slice the clip. Once it is sliced it can be pried off easily with a flat head screwdriver.
If you run in to problems give us a call at 1-877-655-0540.

I installed my TWM short shifter today. It is awesome.
Very happy with it. I wasnt able to take pics today, but I will tomorrow. I also installed a shift knob that is almost an exact match to the integrated audio center dash.(the beige-silver metallic color) It feels awesome. I definately need to get a different shift boot though. As I'm sure anyone else who got one of these knows, the shift boot is way too huge for the short shifter. Anyways, the install took me about an hour and a half, but only because it took so damn long to get off this one piece. Of course my dremel wasnt working so I had to pry for like 45 minutes at this little washer-like piece. Once that was off it was 1-2-3. Overall - very happy.

Its hard to tell, but is that shifter boot hard plastic? If thats the came Im sure you'd need to buy a new boot for it to fit. The short shift is about 2 inches lower than the original shifter I'd say. But judging from those pics it is hard to tell if it will fit or not. If you could take up the console and get a picture then, It will be easier to tell you. Like I said, if not talk to the guys at TWM. :D

A vise isn't absolutely required. If you have a sturdy table with a hole in it, or 2 tables side by side with a small gap between them you can use that. Basically you just need a sturdy surface with a gap to allow the shifter to "hang" from the cup remover tool which is supplied with the shifter.
I hope this helps,

So I FINALLY got mine installed after so many months...
One word, wow! It looks so much better, it feels better, the throws are so much quicker, it's nice!
I have a small nitpick, though, but it's not TWM's fault at all, but as the gear shifter is shorter, your hand has less leverage, and quite a bit more effort is needed to change gears, this can negate the size difference. But I'm sure it's just a matter of getting used to
Anyway, I was trying to drive slow and smooth on this tank to see what kind of maximum mileage I can get... After the shifter change, well, it's impossible to resist going fast

Does that mean that TWM's shifter is a direct replacement for the Asian market Yaris shifter as well? On a JDM G9 Corolla one of my friends had to buy the entire shifter assembly in order to fit an aftermarket quick shifter.
Does TWM's kit come with the leather boot? The gearknob looks to be a Momo item.
How much was the total cost?

The TWM kit is just the metal rod, and at the time I got it, they added the shifter cage bushings in at no charge. The rods are identical, thankfully  They always have some different promotions going on, so check out their site to see their current pricing.
Leather boot and shift knob were acquired separately (boot's from www.redlinegoods.com, it's actually the xB one, but a perfect fit).

i installed it and there is a huge difference i dont feel like im driving a big truck anymore lol
Not trying to hijack the thread for a newbie question, but how to you actually remove the knob from a gearstick? This isn't to switch the entire shifter, just the knob. Seems like the plastic ones are sealed on right around. :S

Unscrew it! Might be pretty tight, but give it a good twist and it should get loose.

So I FINALLY got mine installed after so many months...
One word, wow! It looks so much better, it feels better, the throws are so much quicker, it's nice!

That looks really nice! I'm glad to hear you like the short shifter (http://www.twmperformance.com/shortshifters/toyotashortshifters/toyotayaris-2006-shortshifters.htm). I know exactly what you mean about it being impossible to resist going fast once you install the shifter, I feel the same way every time I do an install!

We basically specialize in short shifters (http://www.twmperformance.com/shortshifters/toyotashortshifters/toyotayaris-2006-shortshifters.htm), weighted shift knobs (http://www.twmshiftknobs.com/), and shifting accessories so any future releases for the Yaris will likely be related to the shifter. We do plan to release bronzoil shifter cable bushings (http://www.twmperformance.com/bushingkits/index.htm) and a short shift boot in the near future. We are open to suggestions though, if there are any products that you would like to see let us know. I can be reached at sales@twmperformance.com or by phone at 1-877-655-0540.
Thanks!

This stuff is great.Unfortunately mine needs some minor adjustments in the middle part, cause it is a little bit smaller than the OEM ''hole'' and I have to use something to make up for the smaller part.
I installed my TWM short shifter last week on my 2007 Yaris hatchback. Do not regret the install. Great shifter. Dremel tool makes it very easy to split the spring clip. Prying off the clip would be a hard task. There is no room to insert a thin blade screwdriver between the floor shifter and the spring clip. Hats off to Toyota for a great factory install job. Be aware not to loose the small plastic locking piece the attaches the the left hand control section cable rod adjuster case.

So that's two people now who have told me that I'll wear out my synchros due to faster shifting... what's the 411 on this? Thanks...
only if you do not cluch properly, long as the clutch is engaged while shifting you shold be ok

hey guys i installed a TWM 2 weeks ago and i was complaining about 3rd gear grinding. The shifter was installed after the grinding but if you have a synchro problem get your tranny looked at first. toyota hates the short shifter. i reinstalled my stock one before i took it in but they knew right away i had fucked with it. Luckily i work for the dealership so i just got a few rolling eyes. But the ss KICKS ASS! i did the bushings too and they are worth it. who knew that 4 mounts could make a difference. THANKS TWM
