help with sub choices

hello would i be right to go with a 10" instead of a 12" sub, since i listen to alot of different stuff but mainly metal and indie. i would like it to "thump" but keep up with the double kick on the drums. I was think JL or memphis. what do you all suggest? thanks alot

it depends on your budget, I like a little 10" sub for myself. smaller cone produce faster bass response while not as deep as the bigger one.

JL audio is great, never tried memphis before ...but search around, look for the smallest volume needed for the box, since our car is tiny :wink:

I've never had problems with JL Audio, but, I prefer to run Polk Audio on all my speakers for quality, clarity and crispness of the entire range.

size of sub DOES NOT MATTER AT ALL for what kind of music you listen to... Thats one of the worst, and oldest audio myths ever.

I can make a setup with an 18" sub sound more punchy than an 8" sub setup... Its more about the box than anything.

Just figure out your budget, find a few subs you like... and then find an amp that would work... then just pick which sub will fit correctly in the size of box that you're willing to fit in your car. Subs have to be matched to box sizes... as well as the ohm load on an amp.

A single 10" sub with 200watts in a sealed box would be plenty of bass in a yaris... The next step up would be to go ported, or up to a sealed 12".... and of course more power.

My single, 10" Alpine Type R plays Linkin Park nicely, if that at all helps you decide on a sub.

Oh, and I'm pushing 400w rms to it in a sealed box (forget the cubic inches, but it's a bit more than the minimum needed). Don't quote me on this, but I believe that sealed boxes produce more of a "cleaner, crisp" bass, whereas ported/vented and bandpass boxes produce deeper, but more "unorganized" bass. I should have gone with a ported box...

I agree with you kaotic....

2-300w for a single 10 w/ sealed box would be good ..... I even used only 150W with my AVI SL300 sub, and it's more than plenty.

budget is the most important thing here ....trust me ...:biggrin:

It is true, the size of a sub does not necessarily determine the response speed. For most people a 12" works well. Head over to either Ebay or diymobileaudio.com to see if they have any DIYMA12 subs. They were sell at a bargain price of $125 and only require about 0.7" of airspace. Very crisp and clear. Mine is getting about 350 watts. If you are not into big senseless boom, this is a great choice.

fuji i like that :biggrin: it seems like it i would be able to get to my spair tire easy. i want to spend about $1000-1500 on everything may be a little more if needed. that will leave me with the same amount for rims and tires. those 15" have to go.

check ebay for the stereo components, and make your own box to save some $$ and then buy my TRD 18" rims ....LOL...

True story!! Although I listen to pretty much everything, my main stuff usually ranges from grungy rock through to heavy metal. In my "other car" I have two 15" with a couple of JL amps that keep up with the quad pedals and sound amazing doing so. They can pound to a rap song with a deep bass line too. And they are audiobahn (you know, that company that went under because they made crappy stuff). I'm a pretty firm believer that if you have a good amp and a good box, you can make even a 10" lightning audio sound good. But if I were you, since I'm throwing in a sub, and the Yaris has next to no trunk space anyway, might as well fill the whole thing up: Get a 15"! :thumbsup:

lol 15" thats bigger then the boot. :biggrin: i leave for boot camp in 3 weeks and my dad said my car may look different when i get back :thumbup: so i gave him a list.
