I spent the extra cash and installed the K&N Typhoon CAI the day before on my 09 Yaris and today the check engine light came on. Does anyone know why this happened since K&N claims that it shouldn't? BTW I thought the car got loud with the TRD Sport Exhaust, but now when you stomp the gas it gets really loud and throaty. Really cool!!

check the maf sensor you probably got a little dirt on it.

Checked K&N website for support and it suggested that the difference in air density caused the check engine light to trip and to clear the light and wait and see if it comes back on. So, I cleared the light and so far it has not come back on after a day of running errands.

just to be sure , does the heat shield ' s hole have a bigger diameter then the pipe
or is it just mine ??

Yeah, the hole is bigger. It needs to be since the engine/tube moves and the shield is stationary. Otherwise someting would break during acceleration, but I am no expert.

Light came back on today, on the way home from work. Thinking I wasted my money. I need to check with K&N tech support.

that really blows, i bought a chepo ebay for $50 had no issues. Is the diameter the right size? just seems like quite a few people with these overpriced intakes have had some cel issues. I am sure it happens to the chepo ones to but I guess you don't expect from the quality brand parts.

Which diameter, the filter itself? What cel issues? I should have researched this a little better.

the diameter of the pipe itself

this may sound stupid but isnt the K&N SRi designed for sedans only ?

I have the CA no SR version. The kit came with a reducer so that the pipe would fit on the carb. K&N website states that the CA fits all.

I talked to a K&N tech and he said that it could take about 100 miles before the ECU will adjust for the increased air flow. He also said that because this model, Typhoon, is new that the state has yet to test it so it will pass smog. It can take up to 2 years before all the paper work gets done and then they will send me the sticker which allows it to pass the smog test. This is a visual fail only at this time, not a emissions fail.

Sounds like a lot of BS from kn I mean its just a air intake.

Does K&N state that system is compliant with the 2009 Yaris?
Last summer K&N told me that the Typhoon was only certified up to the 2007 models and that if installed on my 2008 the warranty wouldn't be honored as they had not yet verified/tested it on the 2008 models. Honestly, I'd be surprised if they have tested on 2009's already. And yes, the 2007 LB and sedan applications were identical.

'nother reason why I am glad that I went with the AFE, plus it is cheaper. Best of luck.

If you didn't disconnect the negative terminal when you installed the intake that can throw a CEL. Un-hook the negative terminal for a while, it will reset your ECU.
No need to knock the K&N intake guys!

CAI's on these cars are such a waste of money. There is nothing to gain and everything to lose.

Same thing happened on my yaris but with a fujita. Took it to the dealer twice and they replaced my maf. still continued to do it so I removed it and sold it. Went back to stock now and I've had no more cels.Good Luck.

not knocking the company, just saying that it seems like with the imports they do not put the priority on the R&D like they do for the domestics. K&N makes a hell of a good product.

Creeper-
No I did not disconnect the battery. I will try that tonight.
MUSKOKA800-
It is advertised as being for the 2009 Yaris and when I talked to their techs, none mentioned that it was not designed for it.
Update (if you are interested)
Yesterday, the light was not on. So, I thought all was good amd K&N knew what they were talking about. Until this morning, driving to work, it came on after I gave it a little more gas then usual. Also, the car (AT) started idling really rough (again) in gear with the brake on, like it might stall, but idles nromally if in neutral.

I disconnected the battery, negative side, for 45 minutes last night. Test drove and everthing seemed fine, but this morning on the way to work the check engine light came on again, after the engine warmed up. I guess this weekend I will do a re-install on the CAI and hope. The CEL was a P0171. Maybe the sensor has some oil on it from the filter, but I did not add any oil, just installed it straight from the packaging.

Is it possible you might have damaged the Mass Airflow Sensor? Or could it be attached wrong?
tambasher

I will check MAS, but if I remember correctly it can only be installed one way.

Yeah I put the Typhoon in my '08. It runs great but got the CEL with a P0101 code for MAF/VAF circuit range performance fault. Going to call K&N tomorrow.
