View Full Version : Can Someone Identify This?

I wanted to check something out with the fuse box and I noticed while I was looking in the pedal area some kind of switch. I didn't mess around with it because I have no idea what it may be. I took some pics of it. Is it for some kind of alarm that was put on the car? The remote that came with the car has an unlock and lock button and when I press them the lights flash. If I hold one of the buttons down it activates the horn to honk until I hold the button to turn it off. I took some pics of the area. And yes its the orginal remote and the car doesn't have power locks. The only thing that works on the remote is the remote start.

Valet switch, or switch to override the alarm using the ignition key.
Like if the battery for the key fob dies and you can't shut off the alarm...
Valet switch is part of most modern car alarm systems.
Suppose you need to lend your car to a friend, or take it to a full-service car wash. Maybe even go someplace so fancy they actually have valets. (Hence the name...) It's not usually practical to give these people the remote to your car alarm -- they're typically kinda big, at least on the scale of things that go in your pants pocket -- but at the same time you don't want the poor bastards to have to listen to your car's pointless screaming. (Many car alarms have a cutoff either to the ignition or the fuel pump, so they'd be screwed, and your car might be damaged as well.)

Enter the valet switch. It's a tiny switch (rarely more than a couple centimeters), tucked away in some unobtrusive location (most typically under the car's dashboard on the driver's side, but occasionally in the glove compartment, or even under the hood in the fusebox). Flip the switch, and the blinkenlight usually goes from blinking to solid, and the alarm is disabled until you flip the switch back.

did you check where the wires go? it could be a crude immobilizer that will prevent the ignition from starting the car (basically disconnects the ignition circuit). or it could be ABS by pass or interior lighting. Its definitely not OEMI couldn't see where they go. Car has no ABS.

did you buy it used? i ask because this is not OEM equipment. check where they go and maybe snap a pic we'll be able to help you more in this way.Yep bought it used I know its not OEM. What about what i said with the lights flashing when I press the door lock and unlock button. Is that stock equipment some kind of panic alarm?

Sounds like you have a after market alarm instaled ,
as no Yaris comes from the factory with remote start.
The switch will be a valet switch. thats my guess

Did you try flipping the switch and then trying to remote start? Maybe the installer didn't want to bother with the hood switch, so they just put a toggle inside for disabling remote start for service.

Pop the panel below the steering column (it flips down). That's the most common place to put an alarm, remote start, or keyless entry module.

It's the inside of a yaris!

I win!

And the switch could also possibly be for fog lamps... I did that to one of my cars once. Alarm and remote start are good ideas too. When in doubt, play with it.

However there is some kind of red light in the back towards the firewall thats in the pic. That might be it.

Heres a pic of the remote. Maybe someone can identify it by looking at the remote...

Please, Please do not touch that switch! I suspect that it will signal the dracoids or bodroniuns, that our planet is ripe and they will come in ther space ships and take immediate posession of it.

Thank you kindly,

Tom Cruise

I see the red light back there. Can you get the camera back there to get a picture of the module?

Is there a sticker on the back of the remote with an FCC ID?

It is a switch to turn the remote start on and off, I think... Just my guess. Glad you were able to figure it out though.
