View Full Version : My Rim Almost Fell Off On The Freeway

Okay, so I picked up my friends, and got on the freeway. After hitting a couple unavoidable bad spots (on I-80, man, I hate this freeway), I started feeling a bad vibration. So I take the next exit that I could, pull over, and check my tires and suspension. Everything was good, so I thought it was just the lane. So I hop on the on ramp, and as soon as I speed up, the vibrations come back. So I pulled over on the shoulder, and check things out. This time, I decided to check the lug nuts. To my surprise, on my left rear wheel, one lug nut was gone . The other three were hanging on for their lives . I tighten all three (and check and re-tighten the other rims), and went to class. Aaarrrrgh, I-80 has cost me two alignments, my tow hook cover, and now a lug nut! Well, I'm actually thinking the excessive heat here caused the lug nuts to expand, and the crappy lanes vibrated them loose.

Wow, that could have totally blown!

Man, I drove to Santa Cruz and back twice over a two day period and I'm surprised then that my crappy, old, hand me down Gorilla lugs held on.

Seriously though, WTF CalTrans? I'm glad that when you repave a section you just leave an abrupt 2 inch drop that is just wonderful to hit at 75.

Also repaving only enough to get HALF a lane.

I'd re-check them if I were you. I'm paranoid now. But yeah, CalTrans makes my head hurt. That 2-4 inch drop or step is a real pain in the arse. It's a good thing that I drive 55 mph only

I would torque the bolts to 76 flt lbs toyota spec. You could go to 90 pounds without any problems though if you want to make sure they are extra tight.

Funny, today walking to my car i saw a lug nut on the ground near my wheel all scratched up (at first i was all..uh oh..), wonder if the same thing happen to some other poor person. I ended up taking the lug nut with me, iono why.

I don't have one of those breaker bars that tells the torque, but I torque it down tighter than what America's Tire/Discount Tires does.

Just step on the bar to tighten as much as possible...Mine have stayed on through stupid 101 towards Daly City...And towards 19th on 280, the road is shit~

hahaha, I don't want to over-tighten them, stripping the threads. I've driven on 101, and I don't think it's as bad as 80. I think I've driven on all the x80's, and the sections I drove through wasn't as bad as the sections of 80 from Fairfield to Sac. :frown:

i gotta do a run through Fairfield to Sacramento then to test out, as i have 17s just like you. Is there just a lot of uneven bumps, potholes right after one another?

The threads wont strip, you'll just get a bent thread or nut, thats what happen to my friends tc rims on his corolla, but a quick tighten the other way fixed it :)

Show us at the meet~

I don't know, they jacked up the right two lanes (I guess in preparation for repaving), plus the existing pot holes (which don't bother me since I can avoid them). Drive in the 4th lane next time you come up, just drive 60 or slower to avoid any possible damages.

4th lane from the left or right?

....try potholes spreading across 3 lanes, its hard to avoid. Have to pick one thats not as deep as the rest lol...right when 280 breaks off to his 19th ave to SF State University, sucks ~_~

This past month, Dumbarton Bridge has been adding things to the bridge, really badly damaged my suspension i think, cause you can only reduce speed to 40, and by that time others are passing or coming at you at 55 mph +.... Avoid the bridge if you can, guys...

4th lane on the right, the slow lane. lol. If I can't avoid potholes, then I just go towards the side of the pothole that's the shallowest.

hmmm, I don't think I've been on the Dumbarton before.

Tell California to make it like on my side. I had nothing but smooth road from NJ all the way to MI.

It's supposedly on its way there. Some sections are nice and smooth, but others are just plain horrible.

i dont get how your lugnuts become loose. i mean the bad roads shouldnt affect lugnuts so much

No clue. I did park my car outside the garage the day before while waiting for my mom to get ready, so unless someone is f*cking with me, I don't have a clue.

Damn, two weeks? I just went to Les Schwab again and bought 3 more tuner lugs, one for the replacement, and two extras just in case this happens again.

My rims? They're ADR's. The tuner lugs? I don't know, they're the cheap ones from Les Schwabs.

^good thinking. spare lugs can never hurt. i have a few in my trunk myself, and it's already bailed me out of trouble once. had a 5 a.m. flat on the 101 and somehow stripped two lugs while attaching the spare. spare lugs ftw!

^oh man. be careful on your way over to milpitas. no need to rush. just more chances to three-peat on three blitz s/c for me.
