Got the stock motor out. From the top.
I figured I'd start a new thread for the install of the built motor, tuning and dyno results.
Note: We're installing TRD motor mounts and Beatrush trans mount ("rollstopper") with the new motor.

So this is the same motor, you just made changes to it when it was out of the chassis? What do you expect it to be putting out now?
If you went this far, assuming then this si the same motor, why not put in a different one? :P
Please inform me, seems very interesting. Especially since the car lacks torque.(feels like 20HP when its 80degrees or above with the AC on)

He built another motor on the side and swapped it in. I think he'd be putting down in the rage of 270-320hp.
Not sure why he didn't put a different one ;) There is also something amazing about building the motor that the car originally came with. Its easy to go buy another motor and throw it in and make more power but its a challenge to build the stock motor to make power.
I can't speak for Garm but i am sure he's pretty stoked to see what kind of power he can put down.

What's the weight difference compared to stock? You using metal hose with it?
cali yaris

The new one is 19 lbs, 14 oz. with the housing and fans. Probably gained a few pounds with this swap.
I only got back the stock core (seems to be missing all the plastic parts), so it's difficult to compare. Also, I'm not using a/c so there are no brackets/clips for the condenser with this configuration.

+1 Can you really read them at that angle?
PETERPOOP
07-25-2009, 01:03 AM
i copied garm's setup; However, I chose to use autometer's angled rings (the gauges sit in them). It gives it a slight tilt forward so easier viewing. However, when test fitted without the rings; The guages were still EASILY viewable and did not seem like something that would be hard to look at while driving ( even at WOT ).

I've been driving with the gauges there for some time. They are very easy to read, and don't obstruct any view out the windshield in that position. I think the AEM's will be even easier than the Phantom II's I had there before.
This is one of those things everyone had doubts about, but I did it anyway. Sometimes my experiments aren't successful, but this works.

well, I know you stripped out the AC, and I'm willing to bet you've changed some parts to increase power/increase noise/decrease comfort... My real dream is to do a sports luxury conversion... turbo built motor + premium interior/ICE (trimming weight as much as possible to keep the sport side of things) so I was wondering if everything you've done will fit with the AC intact

You could keep the A/C with everything I've done except the custom radiator (no room for the a/c condenser with mine). I ran this car for months after it was turbo'd; there's nothing different with a built motor looking at it from the outside.

hmmm but the custom radiator is necessary?

not for a street car, in my opinion.

Just curious why did you install the AEM boost solenoid on the intake?
BTW pros for the quality video there!

why not?

why not?
I don't think it fits to be in the engine bay, I decided to fit it into the inner dash which is protected more from heat there and tubing is well more organized in dash. But that is just my opinion :)
And I like hearing the solenoid clicking when boost activates and it seems like the bov sound is heard from the sintered muffler. I wsh I took pics of the installation but I was too exited to make it work :)

I would rather keep the vacuum/bost lines in the engine bay, and the runs as short as possible. I don't think the temp of those lines is going to make you any more or less power.
But that is just MY opinion, there are plenty of people on here that know more than me.

Length is not a problem neither since turbo pressure, wastegate and bov infront of the driver side. I will try to post some pics about these

very soon now. Art says I can pick her up and drive it (nicely) for about 500 miles. Then it's ready to get thrashed about on the dyno.
Planning on Sunday morning pick up.

picked it up. Runs perfect. TRD motor mounts and the trans mount add a little noise/vibration, but it's not unbearable on the street. Spools nice, drives great. I have to be nice to it for 350 more miles.

Hey Garm looking good. I know this question comes a little late but do you know what the tread is on the water drain in the block on the exhaust side ? I would like to install my water temp sensor there. The sensor is 1/8 NPT and i am pretty sure the block won't be. Thanks
