My wife and I are coming up on our five-year wedding anniversary, and may head up to Vancouver. However, having never visited, we're not sure where to stay. We don't want to spend too much (e.g. less than $100 per night), and would love to be within walking distance of some things to see (and yes, your recommendations are welcome for sight seeing). We'll probably only stay one night, too (either a Thursday or Friday night).

So can anyone recommend a decent place to stay in Vancouver?

The Metro Vancouver area is large - the actual City of Vancouver is just a part of it.

Any hotel in that price range in Vancouver is going to be a dive - try accommodations in the suburban areas like Surrey, Burnaby or New Westminster and take the SkyTrain into Vancouver in daylight would be my advice. Best to leave the Yaris at the hotel.

Wow, really? I found a few (Empire Landmark Hotel?) that didn't look to be dives, but then again, I've never been there. I'll check out the 'burbs.

There are many beautiful and luxurious hotels in Vancouver. I'd be very surprised if any of them have a room for you at $100 a night! What I said was that any hotel in downtown Vancouver that has such a cheap room available is likely to be a dive. There are also plenty of sleazy hotels downtown, you betcha.

Of course, I could be wrong - I don't need to rent accommodations here because I live here. I would still think you could find a nice hotel room within your budget in Richmond, Surrey or elsewhere in the suburbs. If you go to the likes of the Empire Landmark, you won't be paying anything nearly as low as $100. (Hotels are always very coy about their rates on the Web.)

Try Best Western, they could get you rooms for under $100, book online they are cheaper than even going through a dealer network.

The tourism industry is taking a big hit right now and bookings are down and recovering from the Swine Flu issues we had the last few months. With all the cancellations there's been room in the DT area in Vancouver.
You may have to get a place in Richmond or upper Vancouver like Broadway Street area, but there are some deals.

Whistler is cheap cheap cheap as well. I was just there last week for some golf.

If you like the Empire Landmark, give them a call. It hever hurts to make a phone call.

With good weather, Sightseeing is pretty much everything in Vancouver.
Gastown is one place. On a Friday or Saturday night you can check out the Chinatown night market or even the Richmond night market. They should have info on them at Yelp.ca or yelp.com for Vancouver. Just be preprared for crowds but really fun to eat cheap food and lotsa deals (and junk).

There's Burnaby Museum, Planetarium, Stanly Park and the Aquarium.
On the North Shore there is the Suspension bridge and Salmon hatchery and of course Granville Island.
