View Full Version : What exactly can you fit in the back of your Yaris Hatchback

I'm telling you...I love this car. Good on gas; fun to drive...not to shabby looking and I can fit my supra block; spare oil pan; 2 KVR rotors and tranmission in there...along with my Luggage and laptop(just came back from a trip to Michigan when I picked up that block yesterday):

For my parts runs to the US I've had it loaded all the way to the roof line + filled the roof rack...little motor still pulled pretty strong:

PLUS 20 Supra Iron Drum Big Brake kit Adapters + personal shopping + luggage (pix taken at my sisters in Michigan). I had to remove about 6 drums as she was rubbing juuuuuuuuust a little too much

This car has saved me many many times...with a one car garage and 2 Supra's I really couldn't afford a daily driver + part hauler. I'm still amazed at the amount of stuff you can fit in this little tiny car. I wish I didn't have to use it to haul parts as she gets a little dirty but not much I can do about that now other than clean it as often as possible :frown:
What about you guys? Anyone else haul some serious stuff with their Yaris?

I've fit a 2.5L turbo chrysler motor, with transmission, axles, and intercooler along with enough gear for two people (along with the two people) to live for a week, two small dogs. My last move, I packed the car to the roof, and filled every nook I could, even the front seat. Still managed to get over 43mpg to boot!

For our family vacations to Montreal or Quebec City and back, I have managed to fit luggage and food for a week for a family of 3. (plus the family, of course) Not to mention laptop and video games for my son, extra pillow and more for the wife, and so on.
All this in a 3 dr hatch that managed to do 47Mpg from Montreal to the border, and 42Mpg from the border to the NH/MA line. (fully loaded and AC on)
A surprising amount fits in the spare tire well (laptop, spare sneakers) and under the front seats (books, CDs, raincoat) or in the various compartments. (Nintendo DS & cartridges)
Right now my mountain bike is in the back so I can fit in a quick ride at lunch. Although I have a hitch mounted rack, I have managed to put both my own and my son's bike in the back with helmets, water, and gloves. (and some room to spare)
not too much with the back seats in its position :(

Haven't tested the water as much as I'd like to. So far, the biggest item is my German Shepherd. He's fairly comfortable and stretches across the back on long trips.
One thing that wasn't as big but weighed the most was my Brother MFC-9440cn laser printer. The car didn't even flinch.

No car parts, but I have put 10 -12 fifty pound bags of dog food in the Yaris before without any problems at all. Dog crates are in there all the time. 2 regular size and 4 really small ones with no problems, plus paperwork, laptop and more.
Havent had the Great Pyrenees in there lately and she is now over 100 pounds, but I am sure she could stretch out just fine.
Everyone is always amazed at the stuff I can fit in my car.

58" long table, (think it was 36" tall too, and 23" deep) Yep.... that was a very tight squeeze for passenger + driver.
Two 50x14x12.5" tall stereo speakers.
a bale of hay
2 full size bikes
the LB can hold a lot... i'm glad I did not get the sedan.

haha that's freakin awesome. i remember the day i was transporting my 1nzfe shortblock in my xA.. it rolled forward into the passenger footwell in a panic stop on the way to the shop... i stopped at the light, opened the rear drivers side door and picked up the block.. walked to the hatch, set the block down and opened the hatch up. put the block back in the spare tire-well. the guy behind me actually got out of his 7series and said "hey did your engine fall out???"

The thing that gives me the heebie-jeebies about carrying stuff like that in a hatchback is that if you hit something, you're dead. I knew a young guy who got hit head on at a fairly low speed on a college campus with a cinder block in the back of his car. (It was winter and snowy.) The block hit him in the back of the head and smashed his skull, killing him instantly.
The seats in a sedan might not stop something heavy in a trunk, either, but it'll be at a lower height and will be restrained somewhat.

I fit this mirror in my car, with the hatch fully closed. I considered it a feat, mostly b/c I had to open the passenger window, haha.
lately, from moving so often, I have packed in so much that I still get impressed. sooooo glad I bought a hatch, makes things much, much easier and more convenient.

If you have the 60/40 split rear seats (the back rests are split into two pieces) then the levers to fold the seats forward are on the top of either side by the windows.
If you have the bench seat (non-split back) then the lever is on the driver's side of the center head rest.

Sadly I didn't think of taking pictures, but I can fit all my possessions into my car, everything I own. Granted, I don't have that much, but still, it's enough. I've moved 3 times in the last 2 years, and the last time this is what I crammed in there:
One 10 gallon plastic container of books
2 large ~15 gallon luggages
Queen sized bedding
a foldable queen-sized couch/bed
a printer
Three 5 gallon boxes of random stuff
3 large plastic trash bags full of groceries, clothes and odds and ends
and 2 backpacks bursting at the seams with electronics.
Total must have weighed about about half a ton. This car is simply amazing.

Must be a "standards and practices" issue. Significant other or significant other at the moment deserves at least "El Cheapo Inn." At least in my book. Plus, I have no desire to end up bare A$$ in someones face book page.

I've hauled two 50lb bags of peat, 5 bags of manure and 5 bags of topsoil in my yaris. filled the entire back and weighed the car down something fierce. THe car handled it just fine, though. And with the lovely flip-over plastic in the back and a well-placed towel, not a spec of dirt or anything was left behind. I adore my Yaris.

As much as I relish the idea of driving an iQ, my frequent trips to Home Depot for various project supplies probably dictates I stay w/ a big ol' Yaris.
Seemed weird typing that.
I need to pick up a 30-inch range on Friday and I would love to get it into the back of my LB.
But I think the dimensions of the range are just a little too large, unless I leave part of it hanging out the back.
The main problem is the vertical dimension in the back is just a little too small to handle the 30-inch width of the range.
Anyone else had to deal with this?

Did you measure? Also consider that the packaging will add to the width/height/depth of the actual range too.
I once fit a Craftsman 5 drawer mechanics rollaway chest and 7 drawer top chest in the back. Both in boxes. The guy at the store was in serious doubt if it would fit.
Did you measure? Also consider that the packaging will add to the width/height/depth of the actual range too.
Yes, I measured all the dimensions of the range and also the dimensions of the back of my LB with the rear seats folded down flat. I think I could get it in there with the tallest part of the range poking out the back of the car about 9 or 10 inches, but then the hatch would be wide open and I don't think it would be safe to drive, even if I could tie down the hatch.
I guess I was hoping that there would be a way to gain another half inch to inch clearance in the vertical dimension in the back, perhaps by removing something. Obviously I could remove both rear seats entirely, but is there anything less drastic that would buy me about an inch?

I brought home a packaged book case from Ikea last week - removed the front passenger and right rear headrests, put the front passenger seat full forward and maximum recline, laid the rear seat right forward. The book case, a full-height "Billy" unit, fit from tight against the glove box lid to within a couple of inches of the hatch window, but it went in with the hatch shut.
Not quite as impressive a cargo carrier as my old '76 VW Rabbit, but pretty good considering that it's a much smaller car.

A pair of retractable wheel skis for an airplane just barely fit, I was prepared to yank the front seat as it was already slid up as far as it could go. The rear seat is always removed.
Just as I was typing this, I realized all I had to do was recline the pass seatback to get more usefull length, next time.
The dog is looking pissed, because since I couldn't find a 4 door HB with a stick, used, I settled for the 2 door. I like it just fine, but he HATES that the rear windows don't roll down.

Helping out a friend with all the leftovers that didn't fit in her moving truck this weekend, I ended up with...
2 CPUs
12 Guinness pint glasses
6 growlers
1 acoustic guitar with stand
1 5-foot tall bamboo room divider screen
1 pair J Crew Wellies
2 medium-sized J Crew bags full of beer
1 medium-sized J Crew bag full of (full!) liquor bottles
1 (sadly empty) wine rack
3 board games
1 4-foot shelf with hooks
1 3-foot shelf with hooks
2 desk file drawers
1 medium-sized dog crate
1 2-foot tall plastic penguin named Eustacia
Perhaps not as impressive as some lists on here, but did anyone else have a penguin and three bags of booze?

I did just that too a few months ago. I bought a brand new Bosch dishwasher and was able to pick it up in the box and load it in the back of my hatchback 2008 yaris.
I regularly load up $800+ worth of groceries for my restaurant as well. I'm pretty sure it fits more than a regular Sedan would. Love the cargo space.
Did I mention that I have car camped many many nights (probably onto 20+ nights) with my girlfriend in it, summer and winter. I tilt the passenger seat back and fill the gap where the passenger would normally sit with a plastic box and then use a thicker air mattress to hide all the imperfections. I'm 5'10". She tilts the driver seat forward and fills the gap where the back seat passenger would have their feet with the backpacks and also uses a thick air mattress. She's 5'3". It's all about how well you can fill the gaps under the air mattresses. If you figure it out, you sleep very well!

I have my doubts as to that working for me without removing the passenger seat (I'm over 6' 3"). I know I would fit in a Prius re camping. Aftermarket companies make tents for the standard Prius (affixed over an open hatch). I know I'd fit because I read about a couple who regularly camp in their Prius, with the on car tent and an air mattress. The husband is my height. The wife is shorter, but still 6 foot plus. I wonder if the 4 door AWD Mini Clubman has as much room as the Prius re potentially stretching out inside on an air mattress ?

I once spent 5 minutes in a costco parking lot watching a couple try to fit a 5cu ft chest freezer into the back seat of a Camry. It was easily a foot too tall and 8" too wide to fit the widest part of the door. They just kept ramming it in until a random guy on the sidewalk said "it'll never fit" and then they immediately went back to return it.

I think it's most Toyota drivers in general, or at least the ones that don't know the name of the engine in their car.
I've got picture of somebody tying a couch to a roof of a Sienna with twine at an Ikea store.

Some people are very intelligent, but lack sense and perspective. I used to tease my dear departed mother and call her the ivory tower woman. She graduated 8th in her class in high school and applied to Stanford and Cal (UC Berkeley). She got into both, and ended up graduating from Cal. She could dissect grammar just about perfectly in English, Spanish, French, and Latin. She could recognize almost any piece of classical music. She could play the piano....but she couldn't manage her way out of a paper bag (so to speak). I don't think she would have done either of the funny things that you observed, but some things she neglected to do made almost as little sense as what you observed.

I'll be driving alone, no passenger - will I be able to get a 6' wood ladder in, folded, with the seats down??

I once spent 5 minutes in a costco parking lot watching a couple try to fit a 5cu ft chest freezer into the back seat of a Camry. It was easily a foot too tall and 8" too wide to fit the widest part of the door. They just kept ramming it in until a random guy on the sidewalk said "it'll never fit" and then they immediately went back to return it.
Scary isn't it? These people vote, too

Maybe :iono:
Try one of these! All I know is our haulin' days are over - May be able to get the Christmas tree into the 2000 C230 Kompressor of ours, but if we're feeling iffy about it, we'll have 'em deliver it. Our Yaris is strictly for groceries or the occasional junk shopping spree...I just don't want it to get all trashed out from hauling too much junk in it. I am going to keep this car as mint looking as I possibly can.

Yes. There is right about 7' between the glove box and the hatch. I find that I can carry 8' lumber, if I get it under the glove box, into the foot well area and 10' CVPC pipe, if I arc it a bit.

Yup! It worked! It angled between the seats, rested firmly ON the knob of the gear shift lever, and didn't touch the glass of the back window!

I fit a full-size pinball machine in mine. I was almost able to get the hatch shut too. If I would have taken the head completely off, I bet I could have. No pics, though.

I fit this,

Skywatcher 10", sucker barely fits and I've scratched up my plastics a bit because of the base..but I jam it in. It's great seeing fellow amateur astronomers give me a raised eyebrow seeing me pull that sumbich out, they have their mini vans and trucks for smaller ones, BAH! Yaris can do anything.

That is cool - I'll bet we could see a lot of stuff in the night sky around here, as it is pitch black
