Exhaust Shifter

Within the next few weeks I intend to complete the exhaust. Well during the experience I had to date without an exhuast, I really love the roar sound it makes. Although, the car is intended to be streetable and it is too noisy for the people in the neighbourhood who do not like race cars etc..

Yesterday I took some time talking to a friend and he just gave me an idea which is to make a sort of exhaust shifter. In that time we laughed on it but thinking of it, if it could be made, will be awesome to own.

It would be a sort of y-shape welded with the end of the downpipe which in it will be a sort of shifter controlled by hand lever or something else like a motor which shifts the exhaust in one end or the other. I made a rough sketch for it to make a little sense.

I know this looks insane but if it could be made, this would be a unique custom feature the car would have.

its an exhaust cutout AND they already make 100 different kinds, some even electric that all you have to do it press a button!

cable actuated ones are cheap, check www.jcwhitney.com . i say cable, no need to blow money on an electric one IMO.

i ran open header on mine for a few days and it was LOUD. This would be nice for the track, but i don't think it would sound too great

We used to do that in high school. The lever would stick up through the floor pan, LOL.

Exhaust cutouts have been around for over 100 years. That was a staple item in old J.C. Whitney catalogs.

This would be particularly useful if you are going to have more than one tune progam in your computer.

So you can have 2 different maps loaded on the ECU:

The street tune, low boost, regular fuel, using the full lenght (quite) exhaust.

The Race tune, high boost, high Octane, using the open exhaust.

I just been told that due to high temps of the exhaust, the electric motors that open the exhaust cutout tend to fail after some time.

What you can tell me about this? is this true?
