Hey Brian, is Apple still brinking the hacked phones? And how do rate the e-books software?

Hi Dave,

Apple never bricked jailbroken phones - only the unlocked ones (unlocking means the phone can be used with other cellular providers) - and they haven't done that since before the 3G released.

The eBook software is about as good as can be on the iPhone due to its lack of hard buttons but I miss being able to page scroll with a button like I could on my Palm TX, especially when the iPhone doesn't pick up my page scroll on the first, or even second swipe.

A high point of this particular e-book reader is that it's from the same service that I used on my Palm, so I have access to my previously purchased books.

Requires Jailbreaking??????? Ummmmm???? iPhone Noob here.... explain

There are programs you can download with no problems into the Iphone. These programs are usually the ones you WILL find on the Iphone as products to be bought. There are independent programs outside of Apple authority which may be more useful to you but in order to run these on your Ipone you'll first need to Jail break them---- Introduce software to enable it to work on un-sanctioned programs.

Apple Store: Products from apple store-No problems

Independent developers: requires "extra" programing.

I'm sure you can stick with the normal stuff first and when you become more comfortable you can then venture into the jailbreak-ed programs.

....is a process that allows iPhone and iPod Touch users to run unofficial code on their devices bypassing Apple's official distribution mechanism, the App Store. Once jailbroken, iPhone users are able to download many applications previously unavailable through the App Store via unofficial installers such as Cydia and Icy.

Jailbreaking is distinct from unlocking, which is the process by which a mobile device is made compatible with telephone networks it was not specifically licensed to be used with.

Edit: To Brian: Ahh, nice for it to be paid by the company. I only get a corporate discount.

Trapster

the functionality depends kind of on the amount of users in the area.

works kinda like a CB radio... notifies you where speed traps are, and where cops often hide out waiting for speeders.

Saved me from a ticket a couple times.

Can someone who knows please explain this:

1) When you jailbreak a phone, I will assume that you can install whatever software you want, even if you drag it off the backup folder of another user who paid for?

2) You can install other software through the new app store called Cydia?

3) Does the original App Store still work!!!!????

4) Can AT&T find out I jailbroke my phone?(I don't plan on switching providers any time soon or rooming)

5) What happens if I try to upgrade the software via iTunes, will it detect I jailbroke the phone and lock my phone? Or just update it sending it back to Apples software?

6)Thanks!

1. Dragging things from another user's backup folder won't do much as the iPhone uses a package management system and developers tend to spread files out (binary here, config over there, database over here, etc.).

2. Yes

3. Yes

4. They could if they wanted to but they have already stated that while they will do nothing to support 3rd party software development/installation they will also do nothing to intentionally hurt it.

5. See #4. Apple has never bricked a jailbroken phone, only a few unlocked ones, and none of those have been bricked since before the 3G was released. iTunes will update the phone's software without deleting anything, but you will have to re-jailbreak it each time. As such, most of us wait a week or two before installing a firmware release in order to give the 3rd party dev teams time to update their jailbreaking and installer utilities.

6. You're welcome.

Cool. Is that a free app or a paid one?

its free via Installer or Cydia i think.

Though with the free version u can only block 2 numbers and can block all private numbers.

U have to pay if u want more numbers to be blocked

Also can block SMS's as well. Though u need a jailbroken iPhone.

If u dont know how. Go to www.modmyi.com and go to the forums and go to the part where it says jailbreaking.

What did you use to jailbreak?

I used redsnow and after installing one app from Cydia all native iphone apps (phone, phonebook, camera, etc.) disappeared completely and there was nothing even in the dock of my phone....

I reinstalled os 3.0 on my iphone and retried the jailbreak... same thing happened within 10 minutes...

any idea why?

Ok, I dont want any of my icons or current apps to disappear!

And as of right now, if I can have my phone work like before but have the ability to do more/install more apps, then why not right!

edit:
I found these websites. One thing is, which program should i use to jailbreake my 3GS?

http://www.iclarified.com/entry/index.php?enid=4417

Very nice website, where I downloaded the profile to apply tethering to my phone as it is now, and also pertains to question #4, because I see different files say semitethered? I dont know anymore this is all confusing!

http://www.benm.at/downloads/

1) And is it a good idea to get my phones iBEC and iBSS?

2) When I do a backup of my phone via iTunes, will my contacts be backed up as well?

3) I will assume that I can go ahead and at any time restore my iPhone to OS 3.0 incase anything happens?(the link to the OS 3.0 is in one of the links above)

4) I would assume that I can stil tether my 3.0 phone once it has been jailbroken?

5)Thanks again!

I used redsn0w as well, with 2.1 and 3.0, and saw no ill effects. It sounds like there is an existing issue with your phone's file system that is manifesting when jailbroken. Try a full reset as guided here (http://www.iphonehacks.com/2008/10/virginizeiphone.html) (don't be afraid to dry the DFU mode if the issue persists) and then try jailbreaking with redsn0w from another computer than you used the previous time.

Does anyone know if with the jailbroken phone, slingbox can work using 3g/edge now?

And does anyone have a link to OS 3.0 incase I need to update my phone back to the original OS(since I dont think the new OS now has ben jailbroken, and tethering has been disabled and I really need that working for now)
I don't know anything about Slingbox and I'm not sure what you mean about the new OS (meaning 3.0) not being jailbroken yet. It was done weeks ago, and if you ever want to do a restore just follow the DFU mode instructions in the link I gave above.

As for tethering, check out PDANet via Cydia once your phone is jailbroken

So if you can please answer the edit, or if someone can, I would appreciate it.

And you also said redsn0w is what you used? Is there a difference between the different methods of jailbreaking?

iphone FTW...

Search torrents for your favorite iphone apps.. there are torrents with over 5000 apps.

I've been wanting to buy the new 3gs. I have the normal 3G 16GB. Bought it when it came out and i find that the new 3.0 OS is a bit sluggish on my phone. Mind you its hacked an everything but even when i installed the OS fresh it was slow. The 3gs is much faster!

1) Yes, as everything I've read says you will need it for future jailbreaks on the 3GS (but only on the 3GS).

2) Yes, they are captured as part of the general backup every time you sync your iPhone with iTunes. They can also be sync'd with an application of your choosing.

3) Yep.

4) All original OS 3.0 functionality will be retained. Jailbreaking simply adds to it.

And you also said redsn0w is what you used? Is there a difference between the different methods of jailbreaking?
The first time I jailbroke my iPhone was on OS 2.1 and I used QuickPwn to do it. While the jailbreak was successful it left the phone unable to sync with iTunes. While this wasn't a big deal for me at first since I wasn't using iTunes at all (instead sync'ing via rsync over SSH to Linux) it became a problem when 3.0 released. Since many base applications like Maps and Contacts were enhanced I couldn't just copy my rsync backups over to the new firmware, and because iTunes didn't even recognize the phone any longer I had to do a full reset when upgrading to 3.0. I hand-copied all my contacts, calendar entries, etc. to a spreadsheet, and then had to manually enter them on the newly-upgraded phone... a time intensive PITA.

Once I upgraded to 3.0 I tried out redsn0w instead of QuickPwn and it has worked flawlessly from the start. Despite the jailbreak I can still sync (and therefore backup) the phone with iTunes.

I'm using the US version and it's very good. I have a navigation HU in my Yaris, so I am using the iphone app in my other vehicle and in rental cars when I travel for business. It doesn't have all of the bells and whistles of a dedicated GPS, but I really like not having to carry my phone and a GPS when I travel.
