I recently picked up a used 2008 Yaris and it's time to change the oil. The owner's manual was absent when I made the purchase, so I can't RTFM and get the answer. :(

Can anyone tell me if there is a preferred type of oil to use for the engine? 5w30, etc?

Thanks!

5w30 is the recommended oil in the manual.

My owners manual specs 5W-30 ILSAC oil-and states 10W-30 can be used if 5W is not available.

There was a TSB issued however that recommends ILSAC GF-4 oil and approves 5W-20 oil for use in the Yaris's 1NZ-FE engine. So to make a long story short you could run any of these grades produced in the last several years by any reputable manufacturer and be OK, even while under warranty.

I love it when it when they make it easy for the consumer. VW for example is a PITA with their oil requirements.

Any oil with the API "Star" symbol on it also meets ILSAC GF-4 specs.
