View Full Version : Can I install these speakers to the front and rear of my liftback?

What would be needed to have the speaker exposed? Adapters? brackets? McGyver?
I can get both the 6.5 and 5.25 in this model, but by looking at the way the speakers mount (specially the rear) loks like it would be a PITA.
I know I would have to cut out the holes to acomodate these speakers, but is it possible?
Thanks in advance!
Here's the speaker:

you would only need to cut anyhting if you want to use the grill that is with them, the speakers themselfs should just mount up like any other speaker would

Great!!!!!
Did you install them yourself? Is there anything that I need to be prepared for upon installation of the speakers? Special mods besides the cutting of the plastics?
TIA.

I noticed that u drive a 2door liftback.........im just thinking how u gonna mount the back speakers into the panel. :S

I'm not sure... I asked because for what I've been able to see the actual speaker does not align with the perforated plastic panel. I wonder if it can be moved.:iono:

yea i know the back speakers for the rear of the 2door liftback is fuked.....they didnt positioned it prop.
somehow u have to cut a hole within the panel, and screw the speakers in the panel, yet somehow make it stable to the metal door panel.
Well im no help........................PEOPLE HELP HIM OUT!!!

I've no idea how to deal with the 3dr liftback speakers.
For the front, I don't suggest cutting the door panel plastic just to mount the grills. The grills will vibrate unless you make some fibreglass housing for it to mount behind the door panel after you have cut it.
For the front and back speakers, you will definitely need spacers.
My front speakers have a mounting depth of 2 5/8" and even with a 1/4" spacer, the speaker magnet hit the window when it went down. I had to improvise and create some tabs for the three holes to sit on so that the speaker could sit properly. Because of this, I have dead air sitting between the spacer and the metal on the door. If anyone has installed/used Focals, you will understand this dilemma.
Make sure that there is no air between your spacer and the metal door, and also no air between the speaker's mounting diameter and the spacer. You want all your components to sit flush with one another so the sound is reproduced properly.
There is a spacer template that I made for the front/back speakers for the hatchback. I suggest using 1/2" MDF to make your spacers in the event that your speaker has a large mounting depth and big magnets.
Edit: If you don't want to deal with spacers, you can destroy your stock speakers by gutting them and then mounting your new speakers on top of them. I am not sure if the stock brackets (what's left over after you destroy the speaker) will allow for large mounting depths AND big magnets.

dont forget... showing off your audio equipment opens yourself up to a greater risk of theft. i always try to make my suff look as stock as possible.
i wonder who a thief is going to hit first: my car, or the one next to me with a 4' long "ALPINE" sticker on the back window.

I had them mounted for me, I dont like the idea of cutting a hole on the door, and be sure you Dynamat the door panels

Do yourself a huge favor and toss out the grills that come with the speakers.

With the HATCHBACK, you don't have to cut anything.
Well, maybe.
Depending on how crazy your component or coaxials are for the front doors, which are 6.5", you may or may not have to cut the door panel.
Here's the situation...
When you remove the door panel and look in the inside of it, you will notice that there is a circular trim on the inside of where the "speaker grill holes" are located. I am guessing this is the speaker "grill" that is integrated right into the door panel. I didn't examine it long enough to see if it can be removed or modified.
I think the diameter of this trim is bigger than 6.5" so it won't touch the top/cone area of the speaker once you put the door panel back on.
But if you are using big ass components like the Focal K2 series, you will need at least 1/2" spacer to bring up the magnet to prevent it from hitting the glass. The stock bracket is pathetic for this application, so I seriously suggest using a spacer if you intend to install high quality component speakers.
You can probably get away with using the stock bracket to mount coaxials.

Grills are only used for TOP MOUNT applications!
You don't need to use a grill if the speaker is mounted and hidden inside your door panel!

well you dont "need" to but some people like the look of the speaker grills that come with the speakers.. and in that case (atleast with the sedan) you'd have to cut the door panel speakers "grill" off to enable your use of the aftermarket ones ( i personally like the look of stock). To each his own.
and i hope all goes well with the install.
fyi, you'll notice the sound is better, but you may want to think of getting an amp installed if your looking for overal system improvement/volume.

This person speaks the truth.
I reiterate, as always, YOU MUST USE AN AMPLIFIER TO POWER YOUR SPEAKERS!
Do not use DECK POWER!
DECK POWER = NO POWER
End of rant.

I was thinking of putting mine under the passanger seat as well; but I wanted to ability to expand (subs on a seperate amp) and I like the idea of keeping all of my "system" together; trunk allows for this (plus low profile subs; maybe a larger hole in the back seats, behind the padding....)

AHh aiight, yea thats a pretty good concept. Though im not really into bass, i just want my 2 sets of 6.5" speakers to sound clear and have a decent amount of bass to go with it. Damn a soiund system can be expensive, so i have to buy a an amp from ebay and install it. GREAT. Im thinking of getting a pioneer GM7200 Amp..i think thats what its called.

Ouch, you don't want to do that.
It's a much cleaner install if you hide the new speakers behind the factory interior panels.
Easy to do, no reason to hack up your panels.

buy a package of 6.5" spacers. remove the rivets holding the crappy factory speakers to the door, then anchor the .5" thick spacers to the door with silicone or other material to remove vibration and with screws, then anchor your speakers and the spacers to the door.
so yea, it will fit, and you can do a clean install. only a ricer would hack up a door panel to put those ugly speakers in...if you wanna do it, take a sawzall to your nice factory door panel and hack a hole in it, then screw the speakers and the grilles to the plastic door panel. it will vibrate, look, and sound, like pure crap. prepare to get laughed at if you do.
p.s. those speakers may look cool...but, i have heard them. for the price they sound like crap...just cause it looks cool, doesnt mean it sounds good...for example, LED illuminated Dual products.

No real need for a back stage,my stereo actually sounds better without it,pretty sure I had cancelation issues going on inside the cabin, use and amp to power them and tune it properly,if you do not know how to tune an amp to the speakers we can teach you...it is hard the first time to do,but agfter that you can do it in 20 minutes to any setup.
