Friction Point - Clutch

I'm having a hard time getting used to the friction point on my Yaris. When you press the clutch all the way in, you have to let it almost all the way back out before you reach the friction point. I see that it is a hydraulic clutch. Does anyone have this problem. Can it be adjusted. I'd like it to start to engage sooner. I've had hyraulic clutches before (MG's & Austin's) and they were adjustable and felt much better. Any suggetions?

I agree, gear shifts can be a little rough. There was a post somewhere of a guy putting braided metal hoses for the clutch and reported a much nicer feeling, but I do not know if it helped with this.

But, overall, I think it's just something we have to get used to over time.

I'm used to the friction point being closer to the floor board. When it engages so high, I am always hunting for it all along the way. This is really bad on hills. I did find this article that talks about the MR2 clutch which is also hydraulic. You can adjust the pedal travel and position. I'm going to take a look at it next weekend.

Interesting I've had no probs with the position... I've actually found it to be one of the easiest cars that I've driven..

Yeah, I agree with riceboy... I like it! Shifts really well for a $13k car.

I like the shifter, it is just the friction point I don't like. Too much pedal travel for me. I suppose it could just be my vehicle as well. If it looks easy to adjust the pedal I'll give it a try. Otherwise, it isn't bad enough to really worry about.

I find this too. The wife and I take each others cars once in a while, and her elantra's friction point is right at the start of depressing the clutch pedal. It really messes us up when we trade cars....I think that I prefer the friction point a little higher than right on the floor.

If anyone finds out if it is adjustable I'd sure be interested to know....

don't know about you guys but my shifting action is freakin smooooooth as butter. when i test drove it i felt no difference compared to my 02 corolla 5spd.

(any) Clutch just takes getting used to. The Yaris' clutch is one of the most comfortable and responsive clutches I have driven.

i remember when i got this car, i couldn't help stalling at least every few days for the first month or two... the egagement point and "friction zone" took a lot of getting used to.... very different than my '89 Z-24. but i'm used to it now, and i like it.

mine is about an inch from the floor.

My clutch grabs about an inch off the floorboard. I've ground about two pounds of metal so far trying to get used to it. :thumbdown: I have to consciously touch the floor with the pedal. My xB grabbed near the top.

mine was around an inch or less from the floor.. i put on racing pedals and never had any problems since! mine was pretty bad. 5 people, 1 being the car salesman, who knew how to drive manual couldnt even start the car. Had to push the clutch in till it hits the back floor pretty much to get the car started..

yeah, there is a little button behind that clutch that will only let the engine start if the clutch is all the way down... that got me too when I picked up the car... "oh damn, never even drove it and it's busted already!" :laugh:
